Gates didn't beat Apple on Job's watch.

Windows 1.0 was released a good 6 months after Jobs was booted from Apple - and it took several years more for Windows (and Office) to become a viable alternative to the Mac.

Once Scully took full control of Apple, Apple lost its vision and the Mac OS and hardware stagnated. From mid 1980 to the late 1990's, Jobs moved on to build up Next and Pixar.

In hindsight, wall street's regimented corporate philosophy of the 1980's and 1990's almost killed Apple.

Since Jobs returned to Apple in the late 1990s, the Mac has been steadily increasing market share at the expense of Windows. And Apple has completely dominated Microsoft's ability to stay in the smartphone and portable music player markets.

(rolls eyes), Without Microsoft what would the Macintosh be? It's difficult to be the best when your the only one competing. Apple needs Microsoft and Microsoft needs Apple. I also believe that you are referring to (ahem) Balmer-Steve Balmer.
