AT&T-iPhone calling problem is mainstream

Look, it isn't just a few annoying blogs that see the iPhone's problem on AT&T's network. Apple has a real image problem on its hands when mainstream media outlets joke about how bad the iPhone's call quality is.

Dear Apple: You have a problem.  AT&T is hurting your image.

To be fair, SNL is filmed in New York, which is one of the black spots for AT&T.

also a challenge to SNL making funny jokes.

SNL please die already!

This is just more proof that Apple makes inferior products which the charge inflated rates. But you fanboys continue to buy, buy , buy!

Ummmm have you noticed these problems are only in the US? In the rest of the world on networks other then AT&T these issues are not happening.

Actually, it is the same case in Hong Kong. It is because the worst carrier is also the new comer to the market has lots of cash but reliable network. They picked up iPhone rights and ruined everything but their stock.

Unfortunately its not AT&T. I have had problems all around Europe with my factory unlocked iPhone. There is something wrong with iPhone 3GS. Its dropping calls far more then any of my other phones.

I agree. I get pretty good service in Japan on the Softbank network. I also didn't have any issues in Australia on Crazy Johns. In Hong Kong I didn't use the cellular service because they have Wifi everywhere so I just used Skype :). S. Korea wouldn't sell me a sim card because they seemed to be scared of the iPhone. Now that they sell the iPhone in S. Korea I should be able to get one the next time I go :D

As an iPhone owner,  this is just far to TRUE!!!    The evidence is overwhelming and the fact the SNL is stating what everyone else is already saying DOES make it a PR problem.

SNL's got its shining moments, still, but I TiVo it and fast forward through about 90% of it any more.  Weekend Update's still fresh, if you ignore the stupid guests, and some of their political satire is brilliant, but after watching a SNL: Best of John Belushi special last week and seeing all the original cast in action, it really drove home how bad the show has become.

Well we all know this is AT&T fault here in the UK good call quality really with 02 having 96% coverage 2G and 3G

Not so sure about o2 being good either, had many many failed calls, switched to vodafone a couple of weeks ago and now failed calls seem to be a thing of the past.

Never had a problem with o2 coverage.  It's because of their flawless coverage I've been with them for nearly 10 years (back when they were Cellnet).  However their customer support has always been terrible.

I live on Canada, and while we all hate our carriers, I've never had a single dropped call in over a year of heavy iPhone use.

What I don't get, is why T doesn't do whatever it takes to simply solve (or even reduce) the problem in just New York and San Francisco? Given the number of bloggers and media outlets in these locations you 'd think there would be long term payback for whatever investment was necessary in these centers. Someone without a realistic understanding of the cost of negative publicity is tying the purse strings without a true view of real impact over time.

It's not that Apple isn't trying to deal with the problem, it's just taking them a lot longer than expected to cover it up and not admit that there is a problem. You know, the same thing they do with pretty much everything else.

On a side note, comparing the UK to the US in covereage is just dumb. The UK is about the size of our 11th largest state. at&t has a little under 3 million square miles to try and cover versus your under 100,000. I don't own an iPhone, hopefully never will, but in my area my brother has never had any issues with his.

I have no problems with AT&T in NYC.  I think this is a campain to discredit AT&T by people who want the iPhone on Verizon and other carriers. I know about a dozen other people who have iPhones and none of them are having problems.

Everyone I know of in Manhattan (30 - 40) people all have serious issues with both dropped and failed calls on both the iPhone and Blackberry (various models) that ride the AT&T network.  You can't possibly be in Manhattan and not having the problems.

I've been using the iphone for 2+ years now in Tampa, FL and don't find the call quality to be a problem, ever.  Very few dropped calls, less than 5 or 6 in 2 years.

Not sure why service in Tampa appears better than other places in the US.  Just my experience though.

When visiting NYC I on occasion drop calls, the carrier blames this on volume and has told me that they are always working on to improve service. My carrier is Verizon.

This website has an agenda and it has become a pretty "Cingular" message....

L.

So go buy a frigging Droid you a.....s.  What a binch of whiny idiots!

AT&T has a problem...the same problem every cell carrier does (including the rest of the world). That's trying to stay on top of customer demand that's increasing faster in throughput demand than can be addressed with 3G systems (GSM is showing its age). In the iPhone case, they're particularly vulnerable, as iPhone user disproportionately use bandwidth far more than most other smartphone users. Bad management decisions didn't help it either. But mostly, they're something of a victim of their own success. How did Yogi Bera put it? "No one goes there anymore..it's always too crowded."

I have learned to just ignore these kind of complaints. Yes, AT&T leaves a lot to be desired as a carrier, but so do all of the others. The call dropping is mainly an issue exclusive to New York and the big cities of California. For the entire rest of the US, the iPhone is a pleasure to use and I've not had problems with either EDGE or 3G. I understand that AT&T needs to step up their game in these trouble areas, but tech writers (and apparently SNL writers) need to understand that people in America live places that aren't New York and San Francisco.

Anyone want to borrow my awesome AT&T 3G 2+Mbps speed..

I have to say that in Kentucky AT&T sucks. Our 3G keeps going out at least every 2 weeks. Every time you call AT&T, they just give you same crap: tower is out. I can't wait when Apple goes to Verizon so I can switch. I have no idea how a company with such a poor quality product stays in business?

It's not AT&T, it's iPhone's crap cellular stack and it's about time somebody says it aloud. I have an officially unlocked (ie expensive) iPhone 3G with latest fw, live in UK anduse iPhone on O2, calling is appalling. Calls drop on elevator, in taxi, on a train. Starting calls fail and sometimes you need to reboot the device after a call failure. I travel a lot - same for DoCoMo in Japan, Sonera in Finland - one of if not the best network in the world, and T-Mobile in Germany - dropped calls, calls failed etc.

Cellular module is shoddy, news at nine, here's hoping for a better 4 gen.

If that were true then my 3GS would drop calls as well.  It doesn't.  So ... you're wrong.

Um Elevators and Trains... Are you kidding me? What phone doesn't have problems in these situations? Anyway, I'm in Japan on the Softbank Network which is behind Docomo and my service is pretty good. I've been to multiple countries without issue. So, I don't know what happened with your iPhone, but mine (3gs current prior 3g) is working pretty well :)

Have had an iPhone in one form or another for 3 years, no calls dropped, I must be really lucky... or

You're doin' it wrong.

I lived outside of NY for a while and had an iPhone and loved it. I moved to NY and had to get rid of it and switch to another carrier because the network is so bad. I can make calls in my apt and at work, and my friends with iPhones can't even while standing right next to me.

Once Apple wises up and switches to another network or unlocks the phone I'll get another one.

Hi,

Finally something new ,Some disadvantages of Apple phone. The only disadvantage is the interaction between AT&T and Yahoo!. AT&T Internet Service runs the legacy servers, including the domain gateway mail servers for email destined to 'pacbell.net' accounts. Those servers are then supposed to pass the email to the Yahoo! run Mail Delivery Agents.
