AT&T CEO: 7.2Mbs wireless in 6 major markets by year end

Randall L. Stephenson spoke at today's Goldman Sachs Communacopia conference.  He noted among other things that AT&T would open up 7.2Mbs in six major markets by the end of 2009.  The iPhone 3GS will be able to take advantage of this speed while older iPhones will be stuck with 3.6Mbs.  As for cities that are going to get updated?  We know Chicago is wired up and ready to go but who else gets to go 7.2?  Update - as per this week's press release: Charlotte, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Los Angeles, and Miami are getting the "7dot2" lovin'

He then goes on to explain why carrier exclusivity drives innovation and is good for the consumer (ROFLOL!).  Have a listen to the MP3 file here.

AT&T would open up 7.2Mbs

As always, and with every carrier, these speeds are "up to". They are not guarentees; if the provider only delivers 1 Mbps to all but one customer during one minute of the year, they can still state that they deliver bandwidth "up to 7.2 Mbps".

So when we hear of ISP X or Technology Y being able to deliver "up to 10 Mbps", remember that you, the customer, will very likely never achieve that level of performance during any session.

Oh, what about ISP speed tests? Remember, many ISPs game that system. Don't expect speed test numbers to match reality.

Seattle please :)

This guy looks like he is putting his fist up at somebody's anus...
Doens't help the credability of the message.

is that the secret sign for "fisting anyone"?

haha, someone had the same idea, just 4 mins before me. nice!

filth!

Dallas, Texas, September 9, 2009

AT&T* today announced details of its rollout plans for High Speed Packet Access (HSPA) 7.2 technology

AT&T plans to begin deployment of HSPA 7.2 in six major U.S. cities, including Charlotte, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Los Angeles and Miami, with initial service availability expected in these markets by the end of the year.

It's probably me. I've been bent over and getting it from AT$T for so long now it at least feels like it. 3 bars to zero in the last year. Yeah, that's me.

yes, seattle please.

The six lucky cities to get HSPA 7.2 this year will be Charlotte, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Los Angeles, and Miami, and service will be limited at first as upgrades are completed.

Does anyone know if LA will translate in to San Diego getting the faster speed as well

The AT&T Metro areas for southern California kinda go like this: San Diego Metro/County up to the OC and out to the Inland Empire, then the greater LA area includes LA, Long Beach, our Inland Empire, etc. So probably not, San Diego won't see the updated network during this year, though LA will. Too bad I need the new iPhone to see any difference... lol

All I want is regular old 3G. I'm still stuck on EDGE.

Of course they screw NYC, only one of the largest markets.

Agreed! I can't even get good 3G signal in front of the AT&T corporate building on in TriBeca.

How about any coverage in Raleigh NC? Bad coverage everywhere I care about. I called a year ago complaining. No improvement anywhere. Zip zero.

And step outside the metro area and your on edge... throughout the whole state... if you're lucky enough to have coverage at all.

Sprint has 3G coverage everywhere I've ever been in the state.

i have perfect 3g coverage everywhere in chapel hill and durham and the few times i have traveled to raleigh

I am in GSO, and I experience strong 3G service everywhere I go. It does start to fade after the 40-85 split (outside city limits).

Lol, yeah I'll second that request for Raleigh. My girl lives 2 miles off of Capital Blvd, no more than about half an hour from downtown, and my iPhone is unusable at her place.

Now if I want a better connection I have six places in America I can do it.

Tuscaloosa and birmingham better get 7.2 soon!!

Minnesota.. come on. We were one of tops to get 3g, at first, what is the hold up this time?

IF you want better coverage, please contact your local Mayor's and City Supervisors (Listen Up San Francisco) - These politician put so many restrictions and require kick backs to get permission to build out Network Infrastructure. It's crazy. AT&T has the money and the will to expand its' network coverage, but these political speed bumps need to be smoothed. out.

Carrier Exclusivity is Never good for the consumer. It's called monopoly and is illegal. I love my iphone, but if at&t gets a renewed contract I'll be tossing it for a carrier with more working options. 2 Years, att has failed. I could tether my Motorola 7 or 8 years ago.

There are hundreds of phones by dozens of manufacturers. Plus there is a huge industry of innovation by Tech Companies if they choose to innovate and get into the marketplace. The iPhone is just one phone. And one phone does not make a monopoly.

Yay Chicago! Now will it get out to the Western burbs, or is it metro area only?

Does this mean we will reach 3.6 Mb/s in Houston? I usually about 1.5-2.2 Mb/s in N. Houston.

haha 50 states with thousands of cities and this technology is going to be only in 6 cities? nice progress att.

Rogers just launched 21Mbps in most major cities up here in Canada, like last week.

Denver please.

Canadians might pay more for their cell service, but at least our companies dish out the money and upgrade their networks. Rogers has had 7.2 Mbs for years up here. Actually they just rolled out 21 Mbs in a few cities, but most phones don't have that ability to access those speeds yet.
