Apple already announced a media event on 9/5 in Cupertino. They can update the iPod lineup before the current promotion ends and exclude the new products..that's what Apple has done in the past (i.e Apple went from 3G to 4G during the back-to-school promotion.)

Bottom line...now would be a really bad time to buy a new iPod.

"What will we see on this special event?"
Is it just the nano or the touch?
Both?
Will there be other news besides,
like iTunes 8 or maybe TV&Movies for Europe
or AppleTV/iPhone?

if its comes out on the fifth, the college students going back to school are apt to buy, or their parents as a going away present, its bound to be a crazy three months for apple w/ imacs, ipods, and leopard

I think September 5th is pretty solid, considering that iPod stock is gone at many retailers. There's no way Apple would let stock run down to zero weeks or months before a new iPod, iPods are too important to Apple's revenues.

I'm just waiting for the official press release from Apple, should be this week. How far in advance have the previous 'invites' surfaced?

5.5Gs are nearly sold out in Germany, no new shippments were confirmed I think. Those buyers might regret that ;)

apple wouldnt want the release to clash with their back to school promo... people would rush to pick the new ipod as the freebie.

Actually, I think the iPod rebate is tied to specific models, with specific serial numbers. So, assuming that the new iPods have unique serial numbers, they wouldn't qualify for the promotion.

Also, I have heard others who know more than me say that Apple did this in the past, announcing new product while the replacement product was part of a rebate promotion. So, they have done it before, and could do it again I suppose.
