TUAW points us to the news that Open Office 3.0 native for Intel Macs is live.  If you are tired of (paying for) Microsoft Office and not ready to make the move to Google Docs, Open Office is a nice, free altrnative.  It is also much faster than the Java-based (but loved) Neo-Office (based on the same codebase).

Kinda slow and crashy. But a nice free alternative to iwork and Office.

Aweful. Even slower than MS Word in Rosetta.

No Outline View. Despite lots of requests, open office development still isn't working on it.

Cannot complain. Its free after all!!!

change the amount of Graphic RAM

And it will fly faster than any Office/iwork or anything.

I was considering it slow but then I changed the amount of ram the program handles and it made a huge difference. Nearly instantaneous boot and flashy opening documents.

And no, it is NOT slower than MS word on Rosetta.

Go to Preferences/memory and play with it.

Hot damn

Heck, MS word on Rosetta is WAY faster that MS-Word 2008.

Now THAT'S a dog for you. It's like they forgot to performance tune the thing.

well, once I added some ram to the cache of this application...

it is a way faster than word 03 in my imac C2D 2.16.

To be more precise:

Before changing the Cache RAM the time needed to boot a 1.2MB spreadsheet made in MS Office was around 20 to 25 seconds. But I am talking about right clicking on the document and opening it with Open Office.

After changing the amount of cache RAM for the app and objects, the timing was 5 seconds. Not that bad. No?

Forgot to tell

Numbers application from iwork needs around 14 seconds to open the same document.

A word processor that looks like a 90s version of MS Office (and somehow manages to run slower). Let the good times begin.
