Myst now in the App Store, 730Mb Download
For you nostalgia fans out there, Myst just hit the App Store for $5.99. It is a whopping (for an iPhone) 727MB download but promises to bring all of the realism of the 1994 classic Macintosh game. If you don't remember, go grab a refresher.
- All the original Ages & gameplay
- High quality images (better than original Myst)
- Full music & sound effects
- Original movies & animations
- Auto-save (when quitting or phone call)
- "Bookmark" system to save & restore progress
- Swipe to turn
- Auto-zoom in certain close-up areas
- Quick access to hint guide
It comes with these Special Notes:
- Myst for iPhone & iPod touch is a very large application - more like a movie than a song or album. Download times and syncing times can be longer - depending on your connection speed.
- Because of the way the iPhone & iPod touch install apps, you will need to have about 1.5 gig of free space to install Myst. Once it's installed you can use the extra space again.

Must is a classic but whoa...almost 730mb. I can't wait for the day when there's a 128GB iPhone. I hope the game is a success. It will introduce a new depth to iPhone games that isn't there yet.
That's a premium price for a 15 year old game. Current generation first-tier games for the iPhone are priced similarly. For a 15 year old game I expect to pay less than premium.
I agree that a 15 year old game should not be sold at a premium price but such is the state of affairs in the modern "IP" world. Consider music for a moment. Do you expect that when/if the Beatles songs become available on iTunes that they will be sold at a discount? I seriously doubt it. It's a sad state of affairs but we, the average consumers, are partially responsible because we put up with this blatant greed.
Hey: it's $5.99. Crazy would be $19.99 or $29.99.
If you think $5.99 is crazy, look at all the old-skool arcade clones (breakout, pacman, etc etc) with 3rd-rate artwork and simple programming that cost money.
If you don't want to buy it or play it because you did so on your System 6 machine back in the day, the price is immaterial.
This game is ageless, beautiful and worth every penny. . . I would have paid more, if it had been set higher. . . I think the price is more than fair for such a great game that will keep you in awe for hours, even if you've played before. It is still the best game ever made IMHO.
actually, to me, price should be proportional to quality. Age is a distraction from the real issues which are that a lot of new media (whether games, music or film) are just plain rubbish. People only buy them because of the marketing machine behind them.
Nice graphics, but the game bored me to death.
You know, the original Myst fit onto a 650MB CD. Why is this one so much larger than that?
May be due to compression techniques.
"High quality images (better than original Myst)"
It's that last part that is important.
The graphics are enhanced from the original for one thing and some of the animations/movies had to be changed to work on this device.
I know this because I was priviledged to be a beta tester of the game.
I think looking at it as a 15 year old game is a bit narrow minded. The scope, playtime, immersiveness and narrative of the game far exceeds most anything you can find on the app store currently so in my opinion $5.99 is anything but premium pricing for a game of this calibre.
You can be certain that the original version of Myst doesn't 'Just Run' on the iPhone, and with 'High quality images (better than original Myst)' is seems like they've re-rendered the graphics specifically for the iPhone. The raw content may be the same, but the game engine had to be ported to the iPhone, and that likely didn't get done over lunch one day.
I think the cost of 3 coffees from Starbucks is more than warranted. The original game I remember was almost 10 times that.
Don't get caught up in the current state of the 'everything for a dollar' iPhone app frenzy. You get what you pay for.
i just hope it has the Cyan Logo movie at the beginning like the original did and the sound quality is better...
I dunno. I adored Myst and Riven. Those games (they were the 2 best for me) had me locked in that world for ages and wishing I could go there. It was incredible. That said, I've finished them, I know the whole story, know the solutions to the challenges, know the places. What more is there for me to discover now, even less so on a tiny little screen? All I'll do is just go through it like a walkthrough, comparing how the various places look compared to on the Mac version, being reminded of a few bits and bobs I might have forgotten and then I'll reach the end with a hollow feeling of no accomplishment.
I'll just end up getting bored with it, because as much as I love it, it's done. Bring us a new Myst game and I'll get my money out, but to me this is money for old rope, just trading on nostalgia and milking that Myst name one more time for all it's worth. It's ironic that this will likely run smoother on an phone than the re-release of Myst they did a while back, that even on a high end G5 with a monster video card (back then) had choppy graphics.....
If you haven't played Myst though, $5.99 is a small price to pay for it. Compare it to some of the shite on the store which costs $7.99 or even more and it's a bargain...
