Mac Pro redesign mockups

MacBlogz thinks they have an idea of the design of next Mac Pro. We like!

Hmm... I honestly don't see Apple including all of those ports. Drop the eSATA, HDMI, and DVI, and then I'll believe it.

"Drop DVI," you say? Yes, of course. After all, if they include the mini DisplayPort, they don't NEED a DVI port. They can just sell you the appropriate $99 dual-link DVI adapter!

If they drop DVI Im going not going to upgrade anytime soon like I was planning

why have the MagSafe power adapter...I have never seen a Male-to-Male MagSafe cord. I also never go why desktops usually have the power cord at the top. With that configuration your power cord just hangs over all of your other ports, and gets in the way

I agree... who ever made this mock up is waaay better at graphics than they are at smart ideas. It must have beem made by a 10 year old dreamer.

HDMI, Dual DVI, and DisplayPort? Where is the S-Video and composite and VGA?

There are WAY too many video options here, most which will never be used. Go for the DisplayPort, with an option card for those with legacy Dual-Link DVI needs.

What's with the MagSafe? Drop them - they would be useless. You don't want MagSafe on anything other than a self-powered portable device. Unbelievably stupid.

eSATA? Again, more junk. If anything, pros use an attached RAID SAN device; an optical HBA makes way more sense. eSATA is not seriously used by Pros. If you want it, add it with a card.

Multiple digital audio I/O? Again, pointless. This is NOT a home A/V system. This is a Mac Pro.

This reminds me of when Homer Simpson designed a car. Next thing this designer will want is a 30-in-one memory card reader. Or two.

Power cord at the top = Power supply module at the top.

Power supplies generate a lot of heat; if the PSU was at the bottom, that heat would rise and affect the other components. With it already at the top, the heat can be contained and you can also include an internal-facing fan (in the side of the PSU facing the mobo) to pull the heat already generated from the CPU, GPU etc (which is also rising) through the PSU and out the back of the case.

Sure, the power cord does then hang down past the other ports, but it's a simple matter to tuck it out of the way. I'd rather have that than my PSU heating up my CPU, ta muchly.

FIrst of all, there are fans to regulate the temperature. Any heat that sits at the top without being exhausted is a design flaw.

Secondly, PS location doesn't prevent putting the power plug at the bottom. Undoubtably your cord will drape to the floor; why not just do that draping internally?

maybe its always been at the top because heat rises?

The door knob will be the same as the old one, that's for sure..
How come? Because Apple likes consistency. The new MBP got the same door know for the battery, as the current Mac Pro.. See?
Also, Slot-in? Come on.. It's the Mac Pro, not the Mac Underpowered. To get the best you still need the fatty drive...
In the future the Mac Pro will probably use 2.5" SSD and slo-in, but not today.
If there _is_ a Mac Pro in the future.. Maybe there'll only be Xserve and Macbooks..

Sometimes I wonder why these people who spend all this time doing fake Apple designs don't seem to get what Apple's all about: Simplicity and Consistency.

Firstly: Dual DVI, dual Displayport AND Dual hdmi?
Secondly: What on earth are the magsafe power plugs for? and even then, what the heck are they doing right beside *video* ports?
Thirdly, the video card should be in one of the expansion ports, not some random thing of its own.

Apart from those, sure, looks great.

Seriously though, all I want to see is the mac pro's get a CPU refresh, and the addition of those displayport plugs. The rest of it is fine. why fix whats not broken?

Slot loaded drives - wrong (and stupid - implies lower spec optical drives).

HDMI - wrong. If Apple was to add it anywhere, it would be on the MBP. If you want HDMI on a Mac Pro you buy a PCI card - this is a powerful chassis you add your own extras onto. Also adds licencing costs for Apple it doesn't need. Lastly, NO ONE is asking for HDMI on Mac Pros, so why add it, it's not going to sit below your TV is it, and there are better Pro video options, like HD-SDI.

eSATA - wrong. Although I think it's something Apple should consider (which, to be fair) was the point of the article.

MagSafe - wrong. Again, falls under the catagory of "something noone want". The last thing I need in a Pro enviroment is a proprietory connector, designed to release at a moment's notice. Not even a slightly sensible idea, or "want".

Apart from that - I guess the holes on the front will be smaller, and it will definitely have USB connectors.

Way to go.

That Front Panel is awkward and they won't do Slot Load drives.

This Mac Pro mockup is pretty consistent with the rest of the Mac line, and it has some cool features. The HDMI ports are plausible for viewing footage on an external monitor when using Final Cut Pro or Shake. One could probably also connect a game system to their Mac Pro that way. As a matter of fact, some people simply want the biggest screen possible to do their work without the huge cost of an Apple display. A hi-resolution TV would be the way to go.

I also think the use of the slot loads is better. Not only is it consistent with the iMac design, but it's easier than having to hit the eject key to open one of those. Overall, I would say this mockup could be pretty functional in the real world.

holes are way too small to regulate temperature. and could turn your computer into a giant mechanical whistle

The overall design looks good & consistent (black logo, aluminum, size), but that's not hard to predict.

2 mini-DisplayPorts? Yes, but they'd be on a card, not built-in
7 USB ports (3 front, 4 back)? I like it, but unlikely.
4 FW800 (2 front, 2 back)? doubtful.
Slot loading optical drives on a "Pro" desktop? No.
DVI of any kind? definitely not!
HDMI? yeah right!
MagSafe??? LOL!!! what for???

Also, please note that the USB & FW ports are larger on the front than on the rear. Someone was not paying attention!

(Also, I agree with the earlier comments; the main power plug should be at the base!)

These guys have NO clue what a logic board is and how a graphics card works.

As evidenced by their thoughts that Tylersburg will have integrated graphics (thus the HDMI on the motherboard itself) and the fact that there are MAGSAFES IN THE GRAPHICS CARD.

What is this, a laptop?! NO. This is a workstation. If you're hooking up two 24" LED Cinema Displays, just leave the worthless power adapters hanging!

Ugh... MacRumors knows WAY more than these morons...

The mag safe cord is for the new mini-dvi screens not to plug in the actual computer for those of you who are complaining about why it is needed. It's for those who have the screen and want to use it but have no way to plug it in but the mag safe that is used on the lap tops. Please correct me if i'm wrong.

Lame. Doesn't look much different than what's being offered now. Surely Apple can do better than that.

keep dreaming :)

A new "Pro" is guaranteed, and I'd buy this one in a heart beat when I get the CA$H to do it... what I still hope Apple decides to release is a mid-range expandable Mac (not an iMac) like the one below.
