Apple to make OLED MacBook soon?
The Register is today reporting (and also Smarthouse) that an LG insider spilled the news that Apple will soon be updating its MacBook Pro line to include an OLED option.
"An LG staffer has made the very bold claim that 15in Apple notebooks equipped with OLED displays will appear within months... the mole added that once Apple’s unveiled its 15in OLED notebook, LG will then launch its own standalone 15in OLED panels later in the year."
This would make the price of the OLED option MacBook get pretty steep, according to the Register who quote a £2000 ($2700) starting price. That doesn't seem that hefty to a high end MacBook Pro buyer. It would also - theoretically - make the MacBook Pro thinner and lighter. And tastier.
The Register went on to say that they expected some larger screen OLED displays for televisions (And perhaps Apple Monitors?). One interesting thing about OLED displays is that not only are they extraodinarily thin, they can also be curved slightly.
Could this be the minor upgrade our tipster was speaking of? We can only hope!

This sounds ridiculous on the face of it.
First, adding OLED screens to MacBooks is no where near a "minor" upgrade, and secondly, the Air is the technology testbed product with the high-ticket price. If they were going to add OLED it would go in the Air first certainly.
I would expect OLED on all the mobile devices and possibly an OLED tablet or a new Air product with OLED, but not MacBooks.
Dang nabbit I wish people on the internet would take the time to do a little bit of research. Not you guys 9to5mac. I mean in general.
The latest OLED is already prepared to go mass production and with the latest techniques and materials the cost is by far greatly reduced as compared to gen 1 OLED tech.
I truly believe Apple is prepared to do this on a large scale and the cost to the consumer will be on par or perhaps even cheaper than traditional LCD.
Hell, I'm hoping they introduce a product this year with flexible OLED tech. Such a device would solve the problem of needing a large screen but still be pocketable. The ultimate portable.....make it happen Apple!
Agreed...
Apple, bring it on

Certainly? Where does that "certainly" comes from? The only thing that the Air got first as a "testbed product" was SSD storage.
Nothing we know about Apple's product lines makes us think that Apple uses the Air as a high-priced "testbed". In fact, this does not make any sense, because the Air is in many ways cut down (due to the slimness factor) so not only it wont get first a lot of stuff, but it wont get them EVER.
Like the dual video cards on MBPs, FW800, Blue Ray --if and when that comes--, etc...

Not only are OLEDs unnaturally expensive and a hardware redesign impossible this soon, but OLED is extremely short lived tech. It works great in mobile devices because they aren't on all the time. But a monitor thats on 8 or more hours a day? It won't last long. I don't think Apple would invest in a tech that experimental and short lived.
Yes and in another two years after some kinks are worked out the market will finally be in a position to...........work out yet more kinks that would get it ready in yet ANOTHER FREAKIN TWO OR THREE YEARS.
At which point the technology will FINALLY be ready for a very small market introduction at astronomically high prices such that no one except the company owners themselves could afford the resulting products.
All while Apple will have ALREADY have their partners mass produced 2nd and 3rd generations of the the technology for reasonably priced products that enable them to capture yet more markets making it "GAME OVER" for their dimwitted competition YET AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!!
Yeah you go ahead and keep thinking like Apple's competition. You should go apply for a job with them. Samsung, Nokia, you sound just like their people I bet.
Wut....WUT you wanna say something? BRING IT!!!!
Samsung is not a competitor to apple.
They make oled displays... And alot of their mp3 player's already feature them...
What did I get out of reading this article?
*sigh* "Asian women rock!"
its good to see an article not about the iPhone for once. I've missed this kind of news. I really hope 10.6 is ready when they release the new MBPs because i'm going to be buying one around august sometime.
i wonder if OLED screens are more likely to have antiglare finishes than glossy
Oh, Apple would build glass over them, so that you will have a "nice" Glossy OLED Schreen. Function follows Form - and Glossy-Crap is "cool".
OLED I DONT THINK SO!
If OLED is not on the new iPhone than it's not happing on the MacBook pro!
The quality of an OLED Display is unbelievable, the 15 inch OLED panels from LG Display are really impressive.
Nothing else compares to the incredible contrast achieved by these OLED displays. Check out this OLED Information website for more OLED Infos

It is very reasonable to try the OLEDs first in a MacBook Pro or Air before the iPhone. The reason is that the iPhone is already thin and light. I doubt anyone is willing to pay more for one that is slightly lighter; what's the point? But the MacBook Pro is still fairly heavy at 5.5 lbs. If an OLED screen made it a bit thinner and lighter by say 1 or even .5 lb, I think it would provide a lot of value.
@ guy above:
The reason an OLED screen would be used in an iPhone before a MacBook is:
- OLED screens don't currently last long enough for laptop use
- OLED uses way less power which is VERY important to mobiles
- screens are thinner and lighter which is important to mobiles.
what?
Oleds have tiny leds for each one of the pixels. An led is rated to last 100,000 hours, if you left it on non-stop that would be 11.4 years. Also oleds do not have to be in a glass or plexiglass resin and can then be flexible and absorb shock. How is that not good for laptop use?
Does anyone one know if the new 30 inch cinema display for desktops will have the Oled?
so far i think 30" OLED wont be out during WWDC with the current OLED technology
Mayb nex year WWDC or after recession
An increase in visual quality in terms of the colour range, contrast and viewing angle without distortion makes OLED a good move.
The life span and additional cost is secondary.
Perhaps this would be used for the rumoured 15" MB Air...
