Fix the Hinge! Users complaining of a loose hinge on Unibody MacBook Pros
You know how this works. A group of people who have purchased Unibody MacBook Pros likes the rigidity of the old MacBook Pro hinges vs. the new one. So of course they started a petition and got it dugg to get attention put on the matter. It isn't clear what exactly Apple could do at this point except tighten some screws or use less lubricant. But we do know everyone will have an opinion on both sides of this matter.
Dare we ask? Opinions?

no big deal to me, but there might be other opinions out there
But what about the dozens and dozens of people who want to use their MacBook Pro upside down? Not to mention those who want to use them on the floors while hanging off the ends of their beds with their necks bent backwards. Or the many, many people who by dozens of MacBook pros to make houses of cards with them.
Please Apple... think of the children.

P.S. - Pffffththhththththhtht. This is the dumbest piece of nit-picking I've seen in a while.
P.P.S - 9to5Mac your CAPTCHA systems sucks. Change it, swap it, or stop it.
I went back to the store and the geniuses checked it out and said it's just fine.
I love the machine, other than that...
Whenever I use my unibody Pro on my bed, the screen always closes to a certain angle because of the slant I keep my laptop on. I never had that problem with the previous generation Pro. Apple should get something done about this because it takes away from the effectiveness of its portability. I thought I was the only one having this problem but it's good to see that the public has spoken out!
I always had this problem with my previous generation 17" MBP.
I have no plans to use mine perpendicular to the ground so I'm ok. I haven't been this happy with my Apple laptop since my Titanium.
At a guess, try sticking a doorstop in the hinge.
It looks great to me.
If perpendicular use was a concern to the buyer, then test it out in such a silly position. Otherwise, shut yer pieholes! If you don't like it you have return it within X number of days. So simply do that. There is a built in process for unsatisfied customers. If someone didn't return it then it's am implicit acknowledgment that it's ok.
So let me get this straight... a bunch of donkeys are bitching about the fact that, when held with the keyboard at NINETY DEGREES(!!), the screen doesn't stay exactly where it's put?? Well f*ck me in the ass and call me Pamela, but that strikes me as something just a teeny bit outside of the MacBook Pro's intended operating envelope.
I just found out that my MacBook Pro's screen doesn't stay where it's put when I ram it up a baboon's rectum. Should I start a petition too?
Absolutely
In the video, they show it at 90 degrees... but it will do it even at 40 degrees.. I saw that in the video and new someone would say something because that does make it look like there are a bunch of whiner's out there, but really, 40 degrees man. That's how mine is at least.
AND 9TO5MAC.... I HATE YOUR STUPID CAPTCHA!!!!! ...

If i ever need to use it while upside down or laying on my back with it above me chances are I'll probably be in space, and since there will be no gravity the screen won't fall. So I have no problems.
I'm starting a petition to save baboon rectums.
I'm guessing that it doesn't cost Apple any more to change the stiffness of the hinges. So, why not change it so that as LakeShow24 mentioned, it can be used on a bed? I don't think there's anything wrong with suggesting improvements to Apple. I find the people who tell others that they shouldn't complain/suggest improvements to be inceredibly annoying.
MadDog said it all.
So I won't type on my macbook pro, upside down....
DIAF!
I Agree with the Video! When using the laptop in bed, and resting on your knees the computer should stay open. I am not talking about using the computer UPSIDE DOWN or 90° or PERPENDICULAR TO THE GROUND. When the computer is slanted upward lightly, and the screen adjusted properly, it will fall shut on you...Not a fun thing
These people need to get a life!
Get your fat asses of your beds morons, or at least get seated. Oh maybe your fat belly won't let you see the screen in that position.
Oh and wait, I'm starting a petition because of the security accelerometer on the hard drive. You know? the little ball that prevents your hard drive from losing all your data when the MPB goes free fall. That mechanism always stops my laptop when I use it at zero gravity on my moon landing module in outer space. Apple should really fix this one...

So do a lot of people hold their MacBook Pro perpendicular to the ground and try and use it?! I don't see the validity of the claim? I've had one since December and no problems with the hinges.
It is actually annoying. I hate people who don't have the laptop who shout stupid stuff (like above) to get out of bed. The idiocy to presume the people complaining only use it in bed is pretty alarming. I use my new unibody 15" MBP at my desk, in my living room, and sometimes in bed. I find it very annoying that the screen won't stay put, when my girlfriends unibody MacBook does, its hinge is so much tighter.
RE: Get your fat asses of your beds morons, or at least get seated. Oh maybe your fat belly won't let you see the screen in that position
Honestly, do you think all people that use their laptop in bed are fat asses and only use their laptops in bed....You don't think it is possible that they only use it in bed before they go to sleep, or when they are just waking up
My "legacy" macbook pro has the same issue... sorry guys, not a unibody only problem... if you really can consider it a problem!! The 17" macbooks always would fall under weight, where the 15" would stay....
That's a large amount of LCD, glass, and aluminum that needs to be held up by a hinge that was chosen for cosmetic/design issues rather than for orthopedically-confounding computing positions. You want a computer with a locking hinge with wingnuts? Get a Toughbook.
Sorry, but it is a deal-breaker for me. I like tight hinges, and I also dislike that the screen shakes constantly when I am writing.
Well, it is way looser that than the old one. I've always thought it was petty, but it's been an inconvenience I've experienced with my new MacBook Pro. Sure I'm not going to be using it upside-down very much, but I usually use my MBP with the screen open at an angle a little greater than 90º, and if I pick it up quickly from a table (or off the ground), the screen slams all the way open and I fear that's putting unnecessary stress on the hinge. I'm aware of it and am careful now, but I never had that problem with my previous generation MBP.
I've had a problem with the hinge as well. I'd like to see a fix.
Bought a Unibody 15" to go along with my previous gen MBP. This loose hinge is clearly a design issue since the lids on the 13" unibody's and MB Airs stay erect when held at a 90 degree angle.
At first I thought my Unibody was defective, but when the Apple Store confirmed that this was how they were designed, I returned it and bought another previous gen MBP from Best Buy
Any reports on how the lids are on the 17 inch unibody's ?
for the next model update. - Because I can't afford one, not because of this non-issue...
