The Ipod new shape does not make sense. Apple will not do this and compromise not fitting with all previous accessories.
Imagine having to buy a new 300 dollar speaker dock again - don't buy it....

Wider ipods seems unlikely, as it would be incompatible with all existing docks and accessories.

If the iPod looks like your prediction and doesn't add any significant functionality, it will be a great disappointment to those of us expecting an iPhone without the phone...

I would seriously doubt that the click-wheel remains on the next revision of the iPod, especially considering the touch screen interface that was just deployed on the iPhone.

those measurements would be right if the new ipod was landscape with the iphone's screen but without speaker or microphone space top and bottom. subtract those areas and you get something like 3.2"x2.4".

I don't buy any of this. It is poorly thought out and looks like someone threw together some guesses. The iMacs are ALREADY under 2" thick and ALREADY were intended for home use anyway. They ALREADY have a remote control. Indicating the writer's lack of research, he says it would contain "some form of High Definition optical disk technology (HD-DVD or Blue Ray)". Apple has ALREADY decided to support Blu-Ray. That iPod mockup won't fly at all. The black is going to be "more Macbooky", wording a true source wouldn't use.

It's hard for me to believe that a new video iPod would not have a LOT in common with the iPhone as far as overall appearance and the touch-screen interface. However, if I didn't I would at least expect that any widescreen functionality would be accomplished by making the screen taller and then automatically switching to landscape mode when it is turned sideways a-la iPhone. They are not going to make some ugly wide iPod that doesn't fit all the existing accessories.

That is one unattractive iPod mock-up. Just having the scroll wheel flush up against the screen and edge at the top and bottom, and then all that blank real estate to the left and right -- oof. My gut tells me that Steve Jobs wouldn't be able even to look at it without wincing and grating his teeth. And that's why we like him!

Someting tells me that iPod mockup is the result of some misinterpretation, either from the source itself or from this site's staff... a) there's no way the iPod will be wider than the universal dock and b) there's no way the full-size iPod will be fitted with flash storage, at least not just yet (I'm saying this because a 1.8'' drive like the ones found in current and past full-size iPods just won't fit on that shorter form factor... Just look at the other disk-based DMPs like those from Creative, Toshiba, Phillips, M$, etc.; they all share roughly the same form factor with the iPod because (duh) they use the same 1.8'' HDs...).

There is no way the new iPod will look like that monstrosity. The new iPod will be a wide-screen, multi-touch, hard drive clone of the iPhone without communication guts. Do you think that buyers would even want to go back to something that is so yesterday's old news. It's all in the touch, baby.

I think the timing is certainly likely, or around August the 7th atleast.

That iMac design I dont think will be too far away from the reality, judging by the comments Steve Jobs has already made.

As for the iPod. I pray it doesnt look like that. I have been holding out on buying a 30Gb iPod in wait for the new ones.

No! I refuse to believe that Apple would even consider creating an iPod that (at this point) isn't remarkably similar to the iPhone! The new iPod Video has to be like the iPhone; it would save loads of $$$!

Due to profit margins and keeping the $600 perceived iPhone value, why would Apple make a full-screen iPod? A 80 / 100 gig widescreen video iPod would surely cut into iPhone sales, probably NOT something they want to do. Unless of course they come out with a HD based iPhone !? But with current battery technology it would be pretty large.

Wouldn't it be clever if they just merged iPods & iPhone, so everyone who had an iPod would just have to enable the phone portion - what a coup that would be. Convergence! RIM, Motorola, Palm beware!

reason for fug widepod is cos u gotta look at a sore-eye first so when the real thing comes out looking like a hot model from victorias secret like the ipod will(its gonna be touchscreen like iphone not like this fat-chickpod) we will all fall in love and drop the $400-500 on it since its SOOO mu h better than we were led to believe...bait and switch, but in a good way, but for the purpose of knocking u out of 100-150 more than u would normally with this gen ipod...see?mr.jobs didnt get there by being a moron.

Stevie has already pointed out that the next gen ipod WILL run an embedded version of os x. i don't see what the point of running os x would be if they didn't dramatically change the user interface on the ipod. lets face it, a click wheel isn't really a functional input device for what an os x interface would offer

It would seem as though everyone has latched onto the iPod section of this article, however what are peoples perception on the inclusion of a HD Optical Disk within the new iMac ?.

The battle for HD format supremacy between HD-DVD and Blu-Ray is still raging, so the big question in my mind is which camp will Apple put its weight behind ? or will they wait until the winner has been declared ?.
