Apple beats Dell in US education laptop market

Hidden in among Apple's chief operating officer Tim Cook's speech to the Goldman Sachs Technology Investment Symposium was a critical barometer of Apple's success - Apple beat Dell in laptop sales in the US higher education market.
While most reports focused on Cook's optimism as regards iPhone sales this year, the executive also told analysts: "We just received word on Monday that Apple surpassed Dell as the number one supplier of portables to US higher education for 2007," Cook claimed.

"The ceiling for the Macs is nowhere in sight. Even if the market itself isn't growing, for us, switching Windows users is an enormous opportunity," Cook also added.

This is a critical metric for Apple, which once dominated computing on college campuses.

In October 2007, analyst Toni Sacconaghi Jr. of Bernstein Research noted Apple to hold 29 per cent of the US market for notebooks in the most expensive fifth of the market, up from 8 per cent three years before that. In education, Apple took 46 per cent in the top tier slice of the market, the analyst explained.

In Europe, Apple seized the top spot in the education market in 2006, grabbing 15.2 per cent market share (desktop and laptop sales). In the last third quarter of 2007, Apple's director of EMEA education markets, Herve Marchet, confirmed it took 19.6 per cent marketshare in Europe's education sector.

Cook's claims remain anecdotal at this point, as neither Garner nor IDC have yet publically released figures detailing Apple's slice of the US education market, but it's unlikely the Apple executive would deliberately mislead Goldman Sachs.

YEAH... NO APPLE EXECUTIVE would EVER lie to deliberately deceive an analyst, or the SEC, Gasp, Choke..STEVE Laserdisc HACK!  SEC..   Fred, etc.

Riiiight...

oh come on now. any

oh come on now. any executive who hears such news would spread it in hopes that is would in fact be heard by those that may prop up their stock. Does that make it a lie? No it doesn't. It may be yet that all the data is in and it proves to be wrong. That would make the statement wrong, not a lie. Sheesh.

Who cares what IDC or

Who cares what IDC or Gartner have to say since their numbers were so far off from Apple's actual sales numbers for last quarter anyway?

Jobs is bringing Apple back

Jobs is bringing Apple back from the brink of disaster to reclaim the educational throne. It's ironic that not long ago Michael Dell was crowing about how many of his competitors would shortly dry up and disappear. Who's laughing now, Mike! Hahahahahhahaha.

Dell's slipping into a

Dell's slipping into a nightmarish tailspin. They might as well close-up shop and distribute the money to investors. And let me tell you why- nothings saving Dell from this inevitable outcome. Not MS cutting cutting the price of Home Vista by 50% or Bush giving us an extra $300/$400 to buy gas with.

Gateway closure this year- Dell closing shop in 2 years or less!

Dell is the suck.

Dell is the suck.

Dell rocks! They will come

Dell rocks! They will come back. You just watch!

Where do they have to go?

Where do they have to go? Their margins are already as thin as they can be. You can tell they're backed into a corner with nowhere to go. They've played the pricing game to the point where they're only making a few bucks per unit sold...That is why they're starting to manufacture high-end computers with flashier designs. They are perpetually trying to mimic Apple, but it's going to put them into the poor house. That isn't their game, and they're no good at playing it. HP is going to hand Dell it's ass on a plate on the low-end side, Apple will be showing them the door on the top-end.

Dell and Microsoft are in a

Dell and Microsoft are in a race to develop the next desktop operating system
Unfortunately it looks like MS may get theirs out fist with it's Windows OS7. Dell is working on a refined shell for a very robust Linux foundation.
But we shall see.

Dell biggest downfall is

Dell biggest downfall is outsourcing service. Service is so terrible that many of us will not buy from Dell anymore. They did not need Michael Dell to come back, they have got to get a reputable service department again. Until then, even Jesus would have a hard time resurrecting Dell. When we call for service help, we need to understand the helper and the helper needs to know more about computers than rather than reading from the samehelp screen that i have on my computer. Sometimes, I wanted to ssay, 'No sh*t Dick Tracey! Don't you think that I canread rthat too and tried it already? Especially after I just told you that I did!" I am almost all switched to Mac now becuase of these experiences, but still need Windows for one last 'Windows only' program, and Bootcamp with Vista is working very well, so to Dell....'See ya...or not!'

DELL is working on SOFTWARE?

DELL is working on SOFTWARE? Are you KIDDING me? Those guys just buy parts, put them in butt-ugly cases, and sell to morons.

When did they ever code anything? Answer: Never. OK, a shell for Linux wouldn't be tough, but it wouldn't be an OS either.

I'm sure Apple and Microsoft are shaking. Not!

Mikey, boy, it's time to sell the company and refund the money to the shareholders!

So Apple has a 20.1 share,

So Apple has a 20.1 share, ergo: "US students prefer PCs to Macs by a 4-to-1 margin."

20% share in 2006 greater

20% share in 2006 greater than 30% in 2007.  So 2 to one in favor of the PC...but falling rapidly.

Apple's share

Try 5 to 1, not 4 to 1. Apple's share has climbed to 20% not 25%.
But, the number is significant since their share of the market was a lot smaller.

Remember that this statistic is based on the computer manufacturer not the OS.
