AT&T schedules MMS for September 25th, tethering? "Ask us later"

AT&T's network, which is crumbling under the pressure of the high iPhone traffic, seems to be the reason why we haven't seen MMS and tethering.  Should AT&T have noticed about two years ago that iPhone traffic was starting to tax their network?  Should they have waited until now to roll out some upgrades?  That's what they are claiming as the reasons for holding back MMS and tethering.

AT&T said today that MMS messaging, which has been a glaring omission on the iPhone 3G and new 3GS, will arrive on Sept. 25. It's not quite the "late summer" launch that we were told about, is it?

Why the delay? Well, AT&T said earlier that it was because the company was "finalizing internal system upgrades".  They say that tethering will be announced sometime in the future.

Really? We have to wonder why all of the other industrialized world telcos and some of the third world iPhone carriers have had MMS and tethering since launch.

Full Press release:

An Update on iPhone MMS for our Mobility Customers

We know many of our iPhone customers are eager for an update on our rollout schedule for Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS). We’ve been working for the past several months to prepare our systems and network to ensure the best possible experience with MMS when it launches – and that launch date is: September 25 for iPhone 3G and 3GS customers. MMS will be enabled through a software update on that day.

We know that iPhone users will embrace MMS. The unique capabilities and high usage of the iPhone’s multimedia capabilities required us to work on our network MMS architecture to carry the expected record volumes of MMS traffic and ensure an excellent experience from Day One. We appreciate your patience as we work toward that end.

We’re riding the leading edge of smartphone growth that’s resulted in an explosion of traffic over the AT&T network. Wireless use on our network has grown an average of 350 percent year-over-year for the past two years, and is projected to continue at a rapid pace in 2009 and beyond. The volume of smartphone data traffic the AT&T network is handling is unmatched in the wireless industry. We want you to know that we’re working relentlessly to innovate and invest in our network to anticipate this growth in usage and to stay ahead of the anticipated growth in data demand, new devices and applications for years to come.

We thank you for your business and look forward to keeping you updated on our initiatives.

It's about time!

yeah only 3 days after the last day of summer... i am canceling i am fed up with their incompetence to have a well designed network. goodbye iphone i really enjoyed spending the last year with you but att is pissing on you and i am sick of it. thanks 9to5mac great website and I always went here first. i am getting a virgin mobile phone and a ipod touch.

Why would you need an ipod touch when you already have an iphone?

your not going anywhere, let us know when you turn in your iphone.

well unless verizon gets the iphone i am going to sell mine on ebay and buy a ipod touch and get a virgin mobile phone... i mean come on i am paying 100 dollars for a iphone that cant send pics, or i could pay 50/month and get a vm prepaid phone and have all the mms i want. granted the phone will suck compared to the iphone for sure. plus since att is bringing mms 3 days after the last day of summer and they announced that it will be here in late summer means they lied and i can probably get out of my iphone contract without a early termination fee with that tidbit of information.

Read this from the liars.

Send, Receive, or Delete a Picture, Audio or Video Multimedia Message (MMS) with iPhone

Goal:
Send, Receive, or Delete a Picture, Audio or Video Multimedia Message (MMS) with iPhone
Symptom:
Unable to Send, Receive, or Delete a Picture, Audio or Video Multimedia Message (MMS) with iPhone
Fix:
iPhone does not support sending, or receiving picture, audio, or video multimedia messages. If an MMS is sent to iPhone, it will receive a text message instead that contains a link to a website address where the message can be viewed.

"iPhone does not support..." Really? How about "AT&T does not support..." Asshats.

Wake me up when some real news breaks...

WOW iphone users, the FUTURE has arrived. we are getting MMS...

More like the past has arrived. MMS has been out for how many years now? Like, 10? Seriously, considering we've had the ability to send out larger pictures/videos by email for 3 years now, why do they think AT&T's restrict 300KB/mms size restriction is going to somehow suddenly choke the AT&T network? Seriously, if they just enabled MMS in the first place, it might actually REDUCE the amount of data traffic on their network. AT&T are a joke.

I mean, honestly.. they're waiting until the fall to release it... maybe someone will make the claim that they only purchased the iPhone in expectation of a "summer release?"

Technically I think summer ends Sept. 30th, that's what the company will claim I bet. But I still agree its complete BS. This should never have been an issue from the beginning of the iPhone

September 22nd is the first day of Fall. September 25th is definitely moving into fall. Most people think of "summer" as being June, July, August, pretty much ending with Labor Day/Return to School. They didn't meet the technical, nor implied, definition of Summer. There's a class action lawsuit against AT&T and Apple over MMS advertisements, which could have been completely avoided had AT&T just gotten their act together in the first place. A September 25th launch pretty much insures that they'll have an even more solid leg to stand on. Pathetic.

The average iPhone users uses 10 times more data than a normal smartphone user. Verizon would have been in the same boat. I hate to play devil's advocate, but this is just a simple fact. There's a good story in the NYT today about the iPhone's toll on ATT's network. http://bit.ly/qqcvM

Agreed. I don't think Apple will switch 100% to Verizon, but I think both AT&T and Verizon will have the iPhone next summer. (LTE?). Distributing the load that iPhones put on a network over 2 companies will help a lot.

Perhaps. I, personally, see T-Mobile as more likely to get the iPhone first, with VZW to follow. T-Mobile already shares the same network technology, and would require very little iPhone tweaking to make ready on that network. They're already the partner in Germany and other nations in Europe.

I think the chances of this same thing happening on VZWs network was a MUCH slimmer chance of happening. Every year VZW invests more money back into their network to keep AHEAD of what will be expected of their network. In fact, from year to year, VZW invests an avg. of $5.5 BILLION back into their network. This far outpaces the rest of the current U.S. networks. Second, VZW is a private joint venture between Verizon Communications(55%) and Vodafone(45%). This means that the usual BS associated with stockholders, unions, etc can be avoided. ATTs network is just a total epic FAIL. Why else does ATT fall into the one of the bottom rankings consistently in third party research?

I mean, honestly.. they're waiting until the fall to release it... maybe someone will make the claim that they only purchased the iPhone in expectation of a "summer release?"

September 22nd is the end of Summer.

September 23rd is the beginning of fall.

Look it up.

So as long as MMS is active by midnight Eastern time on the 22nd of September ATT is in the clear.

Since it was told to Apple users that AT&T would be releasing and have active the MMS Feature by the end Of Summer, Binding as Sept 23 12:01 am. or 0001 hours sept 23rd.

By the way Summer IS still considered Sept 22nd up until midnight and one minute past.

Lets argue about a feature if the MMS feature not being active on the 23rd of September, The First day of "FALL" and then there would be something to have a discussion about.

Any other arguments are not note worthy until the date is surpassed and the MMS feature is Not Active, as of Sept 23rd.

Also all lawsuits about the MMS feature not being active will be dropped since the Legal Terms are, and considers by the U.S as Sept 22 Midnight. Form internal Memos and "fine Print".

And this falls on the Verbal and written promise of AT&T Being Quoted as Saying. "By The End Of Summer". Again the End Of Summer is 12:01am Sept 23rd.

These are Facts, How Ever anyone can twist facts, but in a court of law, Facts and Evidence Prevail.

Anyway, MMS is an added Feature not active with the original contract, Since the AT&T Contract has no such provision as yet written up for the Terms of MMS Functionality.
Get ready for a Contract Change and Stipulations added to all AT&T data Plains with the Terms of MMS and If such cost will be an Additional Feature included with limits or a Plain fee with Limited and Unlimited Plans added to each Users Contract.

In Any case The Current AT&T Contract has No Such Provision sine MMS is Not Active or Even Exists Yet, So By a legal Standpoint AT&T Covered there Preverbal Butts by not including a MMS Addition to Contracts that where previously in use.
Rest Assured they will add an addition to the Contract and it will be more cost to the Consumer either by using Your Data Plain limits now and or forcing all users that want that feature to have a data plan mandatory for all users, With Limits of usage ect.

Anyway you slice it, We will see how much controversy it stirs up.

Sometime wishing for something is not as beneficial after the fact.

Even if you want to sue them, look at your contract. You are mandated to "Binding arbitration" which businesses win the cases 90+ percent of the time.

I understand what you are saying, but the article says the 25th, not the 22nd or 23rd.

AT&T should be liable! Maybe Apple should roll out their own cell phone service.

Apple starting from the ground up sounds like a GREAT idea-you think AT$T is bad...

Knowing Apple, it would take them 5 years but then it would kick ass. Don't think I want to be without my iPhone for that long...

I bet Steve is mad. Bet he curses the day he signed.

Everyone should organize and take their iPhones to and At&t store demanding a refund for service or a refund for their phone. Its a clear case of false advertising, providing false information to the consumer ob the reason for the failure, providing false information on the fix and the suspense date for the fix. At&t is clearly to blame and a massive turn in of phones would financially deal them the blow that they deserve. Apple provided a fantastic device and was constantly fingered for the problem when At&t knew that they were to blame.

Are people so stupid that they trade cash for something that they don't understand?

Can anyone tell me why the OG iPhone won't be getting MMS? Is it the EDGE network, or some functionality issue with the device itself? Thanks.

Not a functionality issue. I hacked my friends 2G on T-Mobile to do SMS and it works fine...

Perhaps yet another greedy attempt by AT$T to force someone into a new 2 year agreement?

It's disabled by default in all original iPhone firmware. Jailbroken phones have a hack to re-enable it, but even on other carriers, it's an unsupported feature by Apple. MMS is slow as it is, and though it could technically work over EDGE, I suspect they just didn't want to have people calling to complain that it takes 20 minutes to send a picture on MMS. Personally, I don't see why they didn't just modify the function of MMS to work over WIFI, such that they could lower the on-network demands. Seems like a no-brainer to me.

AT&T promised to enable MMS for iPhone by the end of summer. Summer is over as of Sept 22. AT&T FAIL
