Not only did Apple lock Skype out of 3G calling with its latest beta update, Skype is now also calling out some jailbreakers who try to run the new Skype 1.0.2 on their jailbroken devices. iClarified got the scoop from a user in Switzerland who tried to run Skype 1.0.2 on a jailbroken iPhone. They got the message you see below:

Why would Skype try to prevent users on jailbroken iPhones from accessing their software? It is simple. If you jailbreak your phone, you can use Skype over 3G. AT&T is really serious about killing VoIP on its network.
It appears that not all jailbroken iPhones see the message, however ones that use the jailbreak to allow Skype to work over 3G are certianly targets.

This is really getting to be
This is really getting to be a joke. Skype should not have to go out of it's way to block this on jailbroken iPhones. At&t is really sickening. I hope this investigation into skype and AT&T really goes somewhere. We are the ones paying for this data. It's our right to use it as we like. It's time for the telcos to realize that they are just dumb pipes and nothing else.
You are joking, right? Please

It's not illegal.
There is nothing illegal about jailbreaking an iPhone. It's 100% legal. You can do whatever the heck you want on a device that you purchased.

Would you mind enlightening
Would you mind enlightening us as to what law the people who have jailbroken their phones have broken?
You might want to educate yourself a little more on the LAW before you accuse others of breaking it, since doing so can get YOU sued under certain circumstances.
Anyhow here a little info for you:

All the jailbreaking is doing if you want to put it into legal terms is voiding the warranty! Some companies actually don't mind you breaking the warranty as then they are "off the hook" so to speak.
Ignorance like found your comment really bothers me! :)

AT&T bad decisions
AT&T's attempts to maintain control are going to ultimately end up with them being uncompetitive like the big car manufacturers. The US car industry is in trouble because they have been protectionist over their markets and through lobbying have remained competitive on price only, while losing technological ground and now unable to compete against more lithe competitors around the world.
AT&T will go the same way, trying to avoid the expense of changing their business model they will ultimately be left uncompetitive and go through serious difficulty before realizing they have to change with the world, rather than trying to prevent the world from changing.
on my 2G iPhone (jailbreak)
on my 2G iPhone (jailbreak) it works just fine via WiFi with the Skype 1.0.1 version i downloaded last week.
Why would Skype...
Why would Skype try to prevent users on jailbroken iPhones from accessing their software? It IS simple.
To protect themself against complaints if you run a different or modified OS they didn't/couldn't test. They are just saying: if it works, your lucky, if not, don't blame us.
Why on earth would Skype help AT&T or Apple (or your local phone-company) to prevent you from using 3G (or cable, or ADSL) ?
Its just a support warning
Skype aren't blocking the jailbroken phones - the app still works fine. It's just a disclaimer that the app isn't supported in these circumstances - which is fair enough given the issues with mobile substrate at the time of the original release.
Why don't we wait and see if they really block it in a future release - rather than get all upset about a disclaimer?
Works fine on an unlocked jailbroken phone
I am in China and so far it works perfectly fine. Might be because the phone i bought is the unlocked HK version.
Relax people...
It's not a conspiracy!!!! It's merely a disclaimer that the Skype software MAY not work properly on jailbroken phones.
Move along folks... nothing to see here.
Good to see at least some of
Good to see at least some of us passed reading comprehension 101.
The root cause for this warning...
...is NOT the fact the phone is jailbroken, but due to the fact certain programs injecting binary code into other binaries, such as IntelliScreen and MobileSubstrate and its plugins has or has had issues causing Skype to crash.
MobileSubstrate itself has been fixed, and is not the cause of anyones problems, granted you have updated in Cydia.
MobileSubstrate however is a framework/library to allow other "plugins" to easily modify existing applications by overriding function calls or interfaces/classes. All plugins that are written to utilize a recent MobileSubstrate will work just fine with Skype.
IntelliScreen and a few other apps that works in a similar manner to MobileSubstrate (but not exactly like it) still causes Skype crashes after about a minute of use. Simply removing these packages is the best fix until these packages are either updated to use mobilesubstrate as their means of hiajcking the required calls, or fix their own hijacking code to perform this operation more cleanly.
Well this is absolute BS.
Well this is absolute BS. I'm paying $30 a mon, a ridiculous fee, for unlimited data, and this is what I get?
Lawsuit time.
You just contradicted yourself
Judge: why are you suing?
You: I want to use Skype
Judge: Why is Skype (older gent for sure)
You: it's free voice call
Judge: DATA, DATA, DATA =\= voice. You said $30 data plan, I do not see reference to voice
Do you get it? (voice of Steve Jobs)
(technically, Skype is voice, as it uses a voice codec. It get encapsulated in a datapacket)
Are apple and AT&T breaking some sort of anti competive law
Just seem that Apple and AT&T are hard pressed to stop people, who by the way buy their products and plans, can stop them from adding something like Skype....there must be some law they are breaking. Come to think about it since im in the UK does that mean we cannot use Skype either...WHY?
Read CLECS vs ILECS before judging
..because AT&T paid $billions for the spectrum, and YOU want Skype to get it for free.
Go to your history books and see that the same thing happened 20 years ago. Long distance plans were expensive, because it was subsidizing the local phone service (allowed everybody to afford a home phone). When the CLECS forced Congress to open long distance, they also allowed the ILECS to RAISE local phone rates (can't have it both ways my friend).
If congress forces AT&T to run Skype, then the American taxpayer (you) will have to pay back $15B to AT&T for the Spectrum. Resulting in increase income tax, Sales tax and higher monthly dataplans from the Wireless Carriers.

Don't people read before commenting?
It's so funny to read all the posts so full of outrage at AT&T and threatening lawsuit, when it's clear from previous comments what the real situation is.
As explained above, there are issues with poorly written Jailbroken apps (such as Intelliscreen) using bad techniques to hook into the OS and other apps. Skype, the most downloaded app in App Store history, broke for many users because of this. I'll bet many of those users ignorantly got on Skype's support case, and even posted bad reviews in iTunes about the application.
Since I just got the message on my phone this morning - ONE TIME ONLY - and Skype works perfectly, even over 3G calls, it's clear that Skype is just reminding you (and only one nag screen one time) that if their application isn't working on your Jailbroken phone that it's not their fault and you shouldn't expect support from them to fix it.
How could anyone have a problem with that?
Billions in wireless license
What people seems to forget (hackers selective amnesia?) is that the carriers paid $Billions for the spectrum. If Skype wants in, the they SHOULD PAY to PLAY period.
AT&T can say "fine, everybody's phone bill goes up $50 to pay for Skype's free access to our $billion network".
For those too young to remember, the same thing happened 20 years ago when Congress forced open long distance on the carriers. They turned around and raised the local rates (as these rates were being subsidized by their long distance profits).
Society benefited from the spectrum auction, Skype's tactics will mean auctions will be offered for free (after all, these funds were only used to pay for schools, police and social well being. Who needs THAT)
Yes, forcing them to open
Yes, forcing them to open landlines was a horrible idea - I pay almost nothing for my home phone now. What a terrible thing to happen. IF YOU ARE A PHONE COMPANY. In the short run rates may have gone up but in the long run it has been a win for consumers. We need much stronger consumer protection laws here in the US and with a new president I have some hope that it will actually happen.
Well, I see some people
Well, I see some people justifying AT&T's position, but I'm glad those people are not over here in europe since:
The European Union is considering implementing binding guidelines to force wireless network carriers to support VoIP services such as Skype and Google Voice, according to sources.
Love this news, and hope it goes through.
