AIM Beta Push notifications for iPhone working extremely well

Our Beta tester had the opportunity to try out the new AIM Push Notifications App that was made available this evening on the developers App Store.  According to our source, the app is working exactly as it should.  We are really looking forward to apps like Fring and Skype getting this functionality. Any other developers out there trying this out?

Oh, and here's another little bonus (and another FU to AT&T?).  You can now send SMSes to your contacts with this application just like you can in iChat.  In fact, your numbers come over when you sign into your AIM/.Me account.

this is working amazingly, this is going to push the iphone ahead of the phones with multi-tasking phones

The only way this system will push it past multi-tasking phones is if they move the notifications into the menu-bar... instead of this awfully obtrusive pop-up (Who the hell likes pop-ups!?).

They should have the text scroll at the top quickly, and then just display a little icon, want to see the notifications? Long press on the menu-bar. The applications don't have to run in the background, as long as the notifications do!

Also what happens when a lot of notifications come in at once? Do they pop up end to end? Do they just not show you the message?

makes a lot of sense... i hate popus as well

I understand your point, and I agree, but afaik you can configure the Push service on how you ant to receive the messages. For example, if I had Skype running with this, I'd set it up so that the iPhone just plays a sound and adds a badge to the Skype icon everytime somebody writes me a message. I would not want a pop up to appear every time.

Kind of like how the Palm-Pre does it. Sound good...

Then simply set this setting for this application, and leave it with popups for the others. you can it per application, isn't that great?

im happy with it, im not going to complain about it.

LOL! Their beta tester has the Wheels on the Bus app. That app has paid for itself many times keeping the kids calmed down and distracted.

It hasn't worked at all for me yet. Wating on 3 messages from hours ago. But the email did say to wait 48 hours before bugging support, so I'm going to hold of on the FAIL.

For now...

I have been using it for about 6 hours now, and it seems to work as it should. As I respond to people, I purposefully push the home button forcing the use of the push service. Works flawlessly.

Glad to hear this is finally coming along. iPhone OS 3.0 can't get here soon enough. I want teh snappy.

I think 4.0 needs to have some new type of notification system though...

The Push Notifications are working well for me, but I have one small question...

In the preferences of AIM Beta, there is an option for a Sign Off time (currently set to 24hrs). This may be a dumb question, but what happens after 24hrs, when it signs you out, will the Push Notifications stop?

Yeah, it does. If you set it to immediately, it makes you appear offline and unable to get more messages.

yes it is working well... no one else noticed that you can send SMS to your contacts straight from AIM!!!!!! no more fees to pay AT&T

Working great for me in the UK.

@ipodrulz - the setting shown in the screen shot has "Alert" switched on in Preferences. You have three options - Sounds, Alert and/badge. Sound only gives you an audible warning. Badge floats a number over the apps icon - similar to that of a text message, email or missed call. From what I have seen these can be set for each app individually.

Its a really good system - get Facebook, Skype and Twitter on it and life will be grand! Its really fast - even over GPRS when edge/3g/wifi is not available!

All I can say is god bless o2 for keeping the iPhone with unlimited data included in the standard tarrif as I am planning on proper abusing it!

On The Death Star's website under choose your plans I noticed that for the iPhone's text messages it states SMS and IM included. Then further down it states AT&T is also partnering with AIM. Does this mean AT&T is going to start charging for instant messages over and above whatever our messaging plan is?

I'm not sure that's the case, but that would kind of suck. On some phones, usually non-smartphones, IMs are charged through some mechanism. Hopefully that won't be the case :(

Its working perfect for me. The pop ups are very annoying but I just turned them off under Notification/Settings. I only receive a Sound and Badge on the icon. I can't wait for a version to work with MSN. AIM isn't very popular here in Canada.

I've been testing it out and it works as it should, but with the awful notification system I see 99% of people only using badge and sound. Those pop ups are just way too annoying!

how do developers get access to the developers app store?

It's not a separate store, developers got an email with a one time "gift card" code that automatically downloaded the beta app.

It works mostly as expected. I get push notifications on the phone when I'm logged into iChat though. That's quite annoying. But yes you can turn any of the three push notification options under the Settings app, and not under the app's settings but under a Push menu, meaning developers won't be able to prevent you from choosing your alert types.

The only problem is that you have to turn off push notifications when you get on aim on your computer or it will send doubles of messages to your iPhone and computer.

So how can I get access to this beta program? I have a beta testing account for a developer friend of mine. How do I get this?

was working great till yesterday but it stopped working this morning. I assume apple's test period for those notifications is finished.

is the aim push notification working for the 3.0... i just upgraded ... someone let me know please.. thnx

how can i download beta on the iphone 3g??
