Tmobile Selling unlocked iPhones for €999

Wed, 11/21/2007 - 07:10 — Cleve Nettles

News is starting to trickle in.  You can now officially buy an unlocked iPhone for yes, €999.  Is this the actual price of the iPhone.  Is this what Apple would charge if it wasn't taking $10-$20 bucks a month of your Mobile bill?  Perhaps it isn't that easy to build an operationg system from the ground up for a phone that works as well as the iPhones?

I guess we know what price those unlocked iPhones are going to go for in France.  The question is, are they different from a hardware perspective?  Or can people who want carrier choice just buy a $399 iPhone at the Apple store and upload the new unlocked firmware?

Also, according to fortnighttv, tmobile users that have already purchased the iPhone can have theirs unlocked for free.

We'll bring you more reports as they develop...

Yes! Those that already have

Yes! Those that already have iPhones with T-Mobile can get their phones unlocked FREE OF CHARGE! Confirmed by T-Mobile rep this morning.

I'm afraid that this only

I'm afraid that this only applies to iPhones bought since the court ruling, i.e. the last two days. Others have to pay T-Mobile a fee for having their iPhones unlocked. (Anyway, they already have signed the 2-year contract.)

Honestly, that whole iPhone

Honestly, that whole iPhone thing is getting really annoying, sure it is a nice gadget, but somehow it made Apple a lot less appealing company over the past year.

Once the underdog, now a major player (at least in the mp3 player market) apple seems to show it's real face.

The question is, did the success of the iPod and the introduction of the iPhone make this company so greedy, or where they planning to become a second Microsoft all along?

RE: "did the success of the iPod and the introduction of the iPhone make this company so greedy"

This is not greed. It's called COMPETITION.

Apple is in business to make a PROFIT. As much profit as it can make. The law does NOT restrict how much profit a company can make. Apple is NOT the only company making portable music players, it is NOT the only company making mobile phones, and it does NOT provide a life essential product nor service. If you don't like Apple's prices, BUY FROM ANOTHER COMPANY. It is not Apple's mandate to supply YOU a phone on YOUR terms.

Vodafone Germany is trying to protect its market. However, would Mercedes sue BMW because drivers could NOT buy a Mercedes at a BMW showroom? No! Vodafone did not want to agree to Apple's terms and, now, Vodafone realizes that it could lose business.

Vodafone is using the current law to protect its interest and filed the lawsuit as a fallback tactic, since its strategic decision, to not pay Apple, was WRONG!

oh yes, it is greed! - I'm

oh yes, it is greed! - I'm so fed up with Apples behaviour concerning the iPhone. I own two macs and two iPods, and if they would have acted this way while introducing the iPhone, we would all be listening to Zune today. Apple-fanboys always point out how nice Apple is acting, being the underdog. They are not anymore - at the moment, they just behave like another Microsoft. Oh yes! - There is hope though, Apple should get over the iPhone. Nice gadget, but it really is ruining it's image. If they won't change, just wait and see, in a few years time we might all be working with Linux...

...introducing the iPod (of

...introducing the iPod (of course), we would all be listening to Zune today.

Wow, Ive never heard that

Wow, Ive never heard that before. If they are so greedy, why did they refuse to let NBC charge $5 an episode? Why did they give $100 to initial iPhone owners? And for that matter, why did they lower the price of the iPhone in the US? The reason they're charging so much for an unlocked phone is for the sake of T-Mobile. They made an agreement, T-Mobile got cheated, and Apple's helping them out. I bet T-Mobile's even getting a share of the unlocked hardware sales, probably a nice chuck.

To sum it up, Apple is NOT a monopoly.

First of all I never sayed

First of all I never sayed Apple is a monopoly.  I'm simply not a blinded fanboy anymore. So why does European iPhone cost almost $200 more, why instead of doing what's best for the customer (as they used to do) they lock the phone only to receive a healthy share of the monthly fees.Don't get me started on ringtones or ipod games. wake up!

Apple obviously knows they

Apple obviously knows they have a great product with the iPhone, but I fear greed is going to do them in, in the end. I hope we will not see a repeat of the Mac, which was ahead of everybody back in 1984, but priced out of reach for most people, and has always remained a small niche. Maybe Apple thinks the iPhone is so far ahead of everybody that they can get away with anything, but the Mac was even farther ahead of DOS/Windows in its first decade, but people bought the slowly improving Wintel anyway. And then basically the same thing happened at NeXT, which was again a decade ahead of everybody, but went nowhere because of the low low minimum entrance fee of $10,000.

The iPod is Apple's only dominant product, because the price premium is not crazy. The brand name competing media players have some extra fluff and features, but usually don't cost much less (if at all). The iPod is priced right for mainstream dominance. The iPhone is not.

Hardware wise, it's clear from the iTouch that they can make a healthy profit if the iPhone was sold unlocked for €399. At €499 or €599, they would have margins that others can only dream of. Selling it for €999 (or €399 plus mandatory 2-year contract for minimum €1176 ) is just plain greed. Yes, I do think they have a great product, and that's why I think they could do some real damage to the Nokias, SEs and Samsungs if they were priced with reasonable margins of, say, 30%. But it seems Apple always likes getting lots of profit out of a small number of people better than getting less spread over a big number of people.

Of course, it's their product, and they can charge as much it as they like. I just hope they don't get so arrogant to think that they're so far ahead of their competition that they're untouchable. Remember the Mac. Remember NeXT.

You can get your iPhone

You can get your iPhone unlocked FOR FREE ONLY if you bought it from
19. november till now ... Customers who bought it before will have to talk to t-mobile... Look here for the t-mobile press release translated via GOOGLE (http://www.google.com/translate?u=http://www.t-mobile.de/unternehmen/pre...)

Yeah, it really stinks that

Yeah, it really stinks that they are not offering the free unlock for all the official customers...! I mean, I paid for the thing, I accepted the stupid contract, so what do they have to loose...?!

They really could have scored a few bonus points by unlocking all the "officially" bought phones, for sure...

i dont know how anyone can

i dont know how anyone can call apple being a microsoft, they are mearly trying to control the (legitinate) end user experience, from the point you buy the phone, through activating it, new features - videual voicemail (and edge for some networks) through to customer support and not neding users to input complex internet settings plus getting them users using new features to most phone users (internet email etc) and they are controlling there image for usablitlity by cplamping down on unlocks for counties without the iphone yet, so there is no bad experiences before its release, doesnt anyone actually understand any of this? this is a very negative apple site on the whole for a mac site. Im ure apples second phone will be an iphone (phone and ipod) with no internet capabilities, to help keep the music sector and fill the low end gap, maybe without the internet capabilities it will even be a sim free phone, ever think of that?

"this is a very negative

"this is a very negative apple site on the whole for a mac site"

maybe you are right, but maybe just maybe they look at everything with a more open mind then you?

999 euros? are you cuffing

999 euros? are you cuffing kidding me?

At today's exchange rate,

T-mobile/apple has lost the

T-mobile/apple has lost the case against vodafone..i'm also in favor of free-market-mechanics.....

Please, it's T-Mobile, not

Please, it's T-Mobile, not Tmobile.

ok, seriously i can

ok, seriously i can understand why people are curious about some of the recent stuff but seriously why exactly to people have to consistently bash on Apple's products?

This pretty much boils down to it right here:
1) Apple is in no way trying to rob anyone. it is a business & businesses need a little thing call money to keep moving along.
2) The iPhone is just another amazing invention of this company. The keep their ideas fresh & they don't need to steal (like some people >_> Microsoft.....sorry but their whole "we didn't steal gadgets from mac's idea of widets" thing is total BS and everyone who isn't a M$ butt buddy knows it.) from other companies to make profitable, and consumer-intriguing products
3) Last, if any company needs a nice kick in the pants, or at least some kinda reality check to see if they actually make stuff "for the consumers" as they claim....its Microsoft, look at all the bullshit (pardon my language) they've been pulling recently. their brand new OS has many unreasonably similar features as the Mac OS has had for years. not to mention their Zunes are complete and total garbage. hell i'd actually consider putting a zune skin on my ipod to prevent ppl from stealing it. and last but not least their Xbox360 Is an excellent system when you look at the specs they are astonding in comparision with the "way better" PS3 specs. it could have gone a lot farther than it did........if the fuckin morons working over microsoft's retard division knew what a basic computer fan was. you know its sad that the "great" mother of computing doesn't even know how to give one of their products the proper cooling ability to make it operate correctly, which i fixed with as little as an additional $10......now M$ is a company thats money & power hungry...and they have been for years, the sad part is that the idiots in society have paid to keep them that way. WAKE UP MORONS!!!! They are robbing you blind and you continue to use their crappy products & software. THAT alone should make ppl examine M$'s ways and get off Apples alone. if you can't see corruption in a simple thing like cooling an electronic component your even more retarded than the idiots at M$.

"Yeah, well, you know,

"Yeah, well, you know, that's just, like, your opinion, man." - The Dude

OK, I understand some of

OK, I understand some of that.  I'm NOT an Apple Fanboy.  I use Macs and Windows (don't call them PC's.  Macs are PC's too...  remember, PC means Personal Computer.  No matter what OS it runs) and I even have a Linux Media Center box hooked up.  I love and hate them all.  Apple needs to make money, yes.  But it does make a LOT of money, conidering its share of the computer market hovers between 10-15%.

Microsoft makes way more money.  Easily.  Bill Gates is the richest man in the world for a reason.  He's smart and knows what people need.  I say need because the business world is almost entirely Windows.  If you need Access databases or an Exchange Server, you NEED Windows.  Apple makes products you want, that's how it makes money.

No one NEEDS an iPod, an iPhone, an Apple TV, or a slick, all-in-one computer with a 24" screen.  We want that stuff.  We could do basically the same things with a crappy MP3 player from Coby, a free Samsung phone from Sprint, a VCR, and a $300 Wal-Mart PC.  But we don't want to.  The Mac user experience is just plain better.  Everything just works.  I can download a movie, either through iTunes or "other means" and play it on my iPod, iPhone, Apple TV, or Laptop.  I can record my EyeTV and do the same thing.  Can you do that on Windows?  H-E-Double Hockey Sticks No!  The Zune 2 (The NEW one) doesn't even support Microsoft's Plays-For-Sure copy protection.  That's right.  The Microsoft Zune doesn't even play Microsoft's music.  How's that for greedy?  You have to re-buy all your music left over from the MSN Music Store at the Zune Marketplace.  That's pretty crappy.

And let's talk about upgrades.  Upgrading from Vista can cost up to $400 if you want all the features.  You can get a stripped down version for $150, but all the features are $400.  All the features of an OSX upgrade are $129.  Want a stripped down version?  Too bad.  There's only one version.  The whole shebang for $129.  Eat that, Gates.

Nowadays, for home computing, anyway, you have a choice.  Pay more for a Mac with a fantastic user experience, and every couple of years drop a Benjamin for a new OS, or get a Vista box for less, pay for virus protection, anti-spyware, and a $400 upgrade every 5-6 years.  It all works out in the end.  I have a MacBook Pro running Leopard with iWork '08.  I haven't even opened Microsoft Office on this machine.  I have it, but I've never used it.  The programs in iWork can read and write office files, so why bother?

Make your choice, and live with it.

this has nothing to do with

this has nothing to do with free trade. For all those using cars in their example - just imagine BMW comes up with technologies that would make sure you can drive their cars only if you buy your fuel at a Shell gas station and your tires from Bridgestone.

And why not? Why can't they

And why not? Why can't they offer their products like they want to? If no one will buy the "bundled BMW", they might change their product ..  it seems that there's a lucrative market for the bundle Apple/Mobile Carrier (at least right now), so why can't they offer their product this way?

Whoa, check out the Orange

Whoa, check out the Orange prices in France for unlocked iPhones! About €400 less! I bet they'll demand the French not only buy using a CC but also give a DNA sample and limit it to two iPhones purchases per person in a lifetime. ;)

I have iPhone, is a very

I have iPhone, is a very good phone!
