The premium Mac brand: Nine out of every ten $1000+ computers sold in the US were Macs

NPD numbers as reported by Beta News (via the Loop):

For computers selling for more than $1,000, Apple’s unit share rose from 79 percent to 90 percent, an 11% gain and a pretty significant milestone.  It wasn't just in the high end that Apple grew significantly, however.

Apple’s unit share grew from 5 percent to 10 percent for computers selling under $1,000.  That's a lot of Minis and base model MacBooks.

Keep in mind that these numbers reflect sales channels that NPD follow and they don't have reliable data on B2B sales.  Apple reported record sales of 3.3 million Macs for the previous quarter in their finacial call a week ago.

Small potatoes. Wait till Apple resolves the current iMac problems. Apple will sell 19 of 20 premium computers.

PC makers have robbed themselves by selling netbooks that get customers used to paying as well as expecting less and less out of their laptops. Apple took a different strategy and it seems to be working out.

I'd like to see the sales numbers on the new White Macbook, I have a hunch that thing is a surprise big success story. It's more power than most people need and you still get the Apple quality.

What this basically means is that WinPCs are dropping in price nicely and Macs aren't.

Yep, if you can't sell something, lower the price!

I'm a Mac user; always have been and always will. I can't figure out though, why some Mac users actually seem proud of the fact they have to pay more for their computers than their Windows counterparts. I guess it makes them feel good to own a pricier object, even if their wallets are slimmer.

uh that's because only people who use macs would spend that kind of money on a computer (i am a mac user)... but it sorta goes hand in hand

If 9 out of 10 $200k+ cars were Ferraris, that wouldn't mean a majority of the cars on the road are Ferraris.

If the average price of a car was $100,000, maybe. I don't think that the average price of a car of the road exceeds $20,000. You are comparing different not similar things.

Mac owners pay a higher price because they are paying for the hardware as well as the OS. PC buyers pay for the hardware and about $25 for Windows (the price that Microsoft sells each copy in bulk to the PC makers for). Since PCs sell many many many more units, Microsoft is content collecting $25 x 1,000,000 or whatever the number is. However, Apple makes their own OS and if they only charged $25, they would not make nearly as much because of the lower sales volume compared to PC sales. The last time I checked, those Apple programmers don't work for free.

Apple sells more expensive devices - what is the surprise?

I own a MacAir and i-book but my latest purchase was a netbook for travel and a non Apple laptop for my daughter.

No longer willing or need to pay a premium price for an Apple. OSX is not that superior.
