We've heard the reports that Canada's Rogers was going to introduce an 8GB iPhone 3GS a few months ago, but now BGR is hearing that AT&T has similar plans to replace the low end $99 iPhone 3G with a faster iPhone 3GS. Faster processor, more RAM faster network speeds at same price just in time for Christmas shoppers according to their source. They also added:

What makes you think that Apple would make a new iPhone version only because of AT&T ? This is been sold all over the world, AT&T is not that important.
In most places, people don't give a s* about the Pre, Droid, or anything. They don't even know they exist. This is a thing restrict to the US market and a few other countries.

Stop complianing about "iPhone Only" plans - it will NEVER change. It is no different for any of AT&T's other smart phones -- ALL require a $30 unlimited pkg. Same price. Same thing. Different device.

The iPhone 3G was never meant to be on the shelves for a significant period of time.
Having the 3G model on the market during the introductory phase of the 3GS made great sense - clear component inventory in the channel, slowly wind down production, and gracefully end supplier contracts. This strategy also gave Apple the ability to keep full iPhone 3G production capacity in case of unforeseen problems with the pre-production 3GS.
But by now, discontinuing the iPhone 3G will decrease Apple's expenses: It is simply less expensive for Apple to purchase the components and perform support services for one model of iPhone versus two.
When the next iPhone is released, expect the 3GS to stick around for a little while too.
