BGR has a report this weekend that the next version of iTunes, conveniently released in September with the new iPod lineup, will include BluRay support, perhaps coinciding with some new Mac hardware with BluRay drives. They also report that the new iTunes will allow you to visually arrange the way iPhone and iPod touch apps appear on the screen of the devices. Lastly, there will be some sort of Twitter/Facebook/Last.fm integration.
BluRay has been rumored on iMacs for over a year and even has made brief appearances in iTunes credits. Steve Jobs previously called BluRay licensing a "bag of hurt" in response to questions on why Apple wasn’t employing BluRay players in their hardware, however licensing for the technology has become simpler and cheaper recently. It is also interesting that iTunes would support BluRay rather than the current DVD Player app which has got a pretty significant upgrade coming with Snow Leopard. Up until now it seemed like Apple was avoiding the BluRay scene altogether, opting for its customers to get their HD content from iTunes downloads.
It will also be interesting to see, if this rumor is true, if Apple supports any of the many 3rd party BluRay options available on the Mac.

Seriously? Version 9… NOTHING is a bigger example of over stating minor upgrades than iTunes. We really should be at about version 5.5.
I sure as hell hope they finally overhaul the entire library and interface. Namely, Podcasts, TV shows and Movies should not be buried as folders in the iTunes Music next to albums.
…and there damn well finally be a way to manage and organize photos on a mobile device.
…and it’d be really nice if they’d complete a thought with the whole shared library functionality to give us #1 the ability to control iTunes remotely from another iTunes and #2 Use Genius functions on a shared library.
While licensing it may be cheaper now, I haven’t seen or heard of anything the industry has done to make it simpler to implement. There’s been no mention of them pulling back from the insane DRM requirements they got Microsoft to agree to, and it’s not likely they would let Apple skate by with significantly less.
And adding Blu-Ray DRM support adds real costs, both for additional hardware, new drivers (that have to be signed by Apple), a special ‘protected’ kernel, as well as not-too-cheap Blu-Ray drives themselves.
I don’t understand why Apple raises the version number every year… Oh, that’s right they are a publicly traded company that is obligated to make money for their shareholders. By raising the version by a 1.0 they get tons of free advertisement by only adding one or two feature. Dang that Apple, why don’t they understand the rules of advertisement. LMAO. On the other hand any and all fixes would be great in a free program (if you buy other stuff through it or for it, feel free to complain)!!!
…maybe a new AppleTV with a bluray drive?
Exactly what I thought. This could finally turn AppleTV into a huge success.
Although I wish that the Apple TV will have a Blu Ray player I don’t think Apple will ever do that, it simply is not like them to actually use there heads and think about what the customer actually wants instead they only think about what they want and expects us to except there choices over ours. I really hope that I am wrong.
They’ve probably waited for the de-support of PPC machines to bring out Blu-ray for Mac. That way they save money on testing.
What could it possibly mean for iTunes to have Blu-Ray support? iTunes doesn’t even have DVD support.
Quicktime, on the other hand…
Maybe it’s support to copy digital copies of movies from blu ray discs.
I’ll eat my left nut if that comes true.
well afaik blu rays with itunes digital copies come on a separate dvd…..so, if new macs have blu ray readers why wouldn’t they modify itunes to allow digital transfer from the blu ray itself?
and how did my post get two thumbs down and this nut-eater get six thumbs up?
cannibal!
An iTunes-based interface for arranging the iPhone home screens would be a welcome addition. Especially if it shows them all next to each other, rather than having to scroll between them. It quickly becomes rather frustrating to arrange your icons on the phone, so I think this would make things a little easier.
While we’re on that, how about a way to uninstall the default Stocks and Weather apps? Give me Bloomberg and Weatherbug any day!
- Multiuser-Support
- Cocoa
- Support of more Codecs (Flac)
- Transcoding from AIFF, ALAC, FLAC to AAC for all iPods (Syncing)
- Replay-Gain
a failure to despaminate.
Maybe itunes will allow you to stream blu ray to the tablet! (or to other devices with HDMI connectors such as the Apple TV) Would blu ray allow Apple to develope an external player that connects to your Mac via USB or firewire? or WIFI?
Sorry, but I just don’t get the interest over Blu-Ray. I think optical stuff will be out in 5 years. When you can buy a thumb drive with 64GB capacity (and dropping prices) right now to load anything you want, why hassle with a large disc? Seriously, I think Blu-Ray is just yesterday’s technology on steriods.
iTunes can’t even play DVD let alone Blu Ray discs.
That is why iTunes will support Blu-ray. Archive all your tunes! The ultimate DR plan. 25-50GB per disk. Blu-ray drives coming soon to your new Mac, new Time Capsule or Apple TV.
It’s way cheaper to buy a 1 TB HDD than blank 50 GB discs. Only a fool…
Why do you think you can buy 100 pack of DVD-Rs for $20. Blu-ray disks will cost 50 cents each within a year now that Toshiba is on board. Toshiba may be making the new Superdrives with Blu-ray for Apple!
I’d like to have iTunesBroadcaster feature, where you could listen same music from all computers in different rooms in sync.
