5th Avenue Store line

Thinking about hitting the 5th Avenue store for an iPhone 3G S?  You might want to wait a bit.  Engadget has the video...it looks like the line might be a little more than you can handle.  We have to admit we're kind of surprised how long the lines are ... for a compass, a better camera and additional speed.

.. for a compass, a better camera and additional speed....

wow... you sound like an idiot.

wow... you sound like a real winner.

"you sound like an idiot." agreed, the speed alone is worth an upgrade, and you forgot voice and storage capacity.

you sound like a nerd

you sound like a poor mutherfucker who cannot afford an iphone

Worth the upgrade. But worth queued up like that rather than wait a few days and just walk into somewhere? That is the context.

I drove up to the AT&T store that I pre-ordered from at 7:30, walked in the door, walked up to the counter, handed them my receipt, they opened up my iPhone 3GS, activated it, and moved my sim card from my old 3G to the 3GS, walked out the door by 7:50.

Until you use this phone, do not under estimate the amount of speed it has. There is a good reason why Apple didn't get into Mhz and %s, because they don't convey just how much faster it is. The apps hop around like lightning, and if you have a game, they scream at amazing FPS. Try the terminator Lite free game for a good example. With the new SDK I wouldn't be surprised to see some 30 pin accessories that have a few buttons on them for game input.

This phone is REALLY fast, and it seems that sites are getting too hung up on the "same look and feel" and "just a speed increase" to see how much better this phone is than the previous one.

Wow, and I thought New Yorkers were such creative original people..hmmm, seems they are just mindless sheep.

nerds

Hey 1st poster. I think your so mad because when someone actually points out the facts, it makes you realize how ridiculous it really is, and how ridiculous you feel for wanting it so bad.
Come on people, don't be sheep.

can someone please explain to me this whole "sheep" thing? Just because a lot of people use a product doesn't make them "sheep". The iPhone is a tiny percentage of the cell phone market, and thus the users are a tiny percentage of cell phone users. They are just more passionate. Nokia sells way more phones than Apple, but no one lines up to buy the latest free-with-contract plastic candy bar phone.
When people lined up around the block for Windows 95 were they "sheep"? When people line up around the block for U2 tickets, are they "sheep"? These people are just excited to get their hands on a new toy. Let them have their fun. Jeez.

Shut up and quit your whining.

you shut up and go dig your mother's grave

i am italian and i live in italy ofcourse but what i see here...i would never go and live in new york.i just have no words.

to double the speed of everything I do, and triple the speed of web browsing (and yes, these bumps have been confirmed by several testers...) is worth the upgrade price to me. Video and voice control are nice extras.

You know what else is nice? Pre-Order and FedEx. Mine will be here this afternoon, and I'm not tired or wet!

not everybody has an iPhone. I think the most people are standing there for their first iPhone and not for a compass, a better camera and additional speed.

It just depend how you look at it. Some people spend $200 for a pair of Air Jordons. He/she may think it is worth it. Another may say it is just a pair of shoes.

Jeez, If some people spend $200 on a pair of Air Jordons, some people should let them know that they are better off with the original Air Jordan!

But seriously, these people need to get out more and I don't mean going to the Apple Store to wait for a smallish update on a bestselling mobile device. Sometimes, Apple fans make me wonder, whether vanity and consumerism is worth living.

I've been following this product release to a certain extent and I am still in shock about how much WWDC did NOT turn out to be an event to release anything drastically new in the iPhone line.

And shame on Apple for selling me a prototype at the end of last year! My unibody, 2.4 GHz MacBook is now worth so much less than what I paid for it! Apple is the most arrogant company that I ever come across.

I got mine delivered at home at 9am. What a bunch of fucktards.

that's why you will die off diabetes you lazy asshole, and they won't

I was playing turista in NYC on July 14 2008, so of course we made a pilgrimage to the 5th Ave store. This was a few days after the 3G came out on July 11 . There was a line exactly like this then. It has to be a 4-5 hour line, maybe 8! There are some advantages to big city living, but this ain't one of 'em.
Didn't realize until then that the Glass Cube is only a cover for the elevator/stair case to a plain ol' Apple store, and not a particularly large one.
I was suprised how much I enjoyed NYC and the East Coast. I look forward to going back! I admit I had a Midwest bias beforehand.

you guys who whine..just STFU and let them do what they want to do and you just go on with your life..quit whining you anti apple fanboys..get a F&#@* life!

We forgetting the 30GB on 3G S? :P

Edit:
32 GB sorry :)

that queue is just bloggers and the will it blend guy.

Amazing, simply amazing.
Would love to see how the situation is/was like in LA or San Francisco.

I was at the 5th Avenue store last year over the iPhone launch weekend, it was a similar scene. I think the staff were really helpful and seemed to be coping with the crowds. What's important to note is that this is just the line to buy the phone. If you want to go in and browse that's still possible. So I guess the wait time is only as long as it takes for each person to pay and activate (which I accept would take longer than a normal transaction). But still, I'd expect the staff would be making it as quick as possible. Glad I'm not there though :P

or a little speed bump.
Its about the end of the "never buy a v1.0 version of any product" period.
These are starting to be folks who've been waiting for the rapid transitions and bug work-outs to happen, and the the past 2 years is now just prelude.
