Apple lists AirPlay-enabled apps in a new App Store section

AirPlay is a great new feature of iOS 4 that lets you wirelessly stream photos, video and music from an iOS device to your television via Apple TV. Like any new tech, AirPlay has its share of teething problems as it doesn’t work two-way between any iOS device, as originally planned. Apple fixed some of the concerns with iOS 4.3 and AirPlay can now stream video from the Photos app, web sites and Air Play-enabled apps that are now listed in a brand new section on the App Store.

In an effort to make finding third-party apps optimized for Air Play a tad easier, Apple added a new iTunes section viewable on both iOS devices and desktop iTunes. Dubbed “Great AirPlay-Enabled Apps,” it lists third-party applications that support AirPlay media streaming out of the box. These include specialized software like Air Video, but also well-known apps with built-in AirPlay streaming capabilities, such as VEVO, Discovery Channel HD, ESPN Magazine for iPad and more. There were only eleven apps listed at press time, but we expect their number to grow as more developers enhance their products with AirPlay technology.
