Apple owns 9.3 percent of Imagination Technologies and uses its PowerVR SGX graphics chip inside its iPad — now the smaller firm has seen profits climb 131 percent and also made a critical $27 million investment in 3D technology for mobile devices.

Imagination Technologies is to buy Caustic Graphics for $27m to bring 3D graphics to mobile phones. The company also recently acquired VoIP operator, HelloSoft for “up to $47 million”, reports claim.

Caustic Graphics makes the OpenRL SDK. “Built on the OpenGL and OpenGL Shading Language (GLSL) APIs, the OpenRL SDK is a cross-platform, industry-standard programming API with unique raytracing extensions,” the company says. Interesting to reflect the Imagination purchase comes as Apple files a bevy of 3D patents.

First half adjusted pre-tax profits at Imagination Technologies Group jumped 131% to £10.1m driven by doubling of chip unit volume and strong licensing. The company also owns the PURE digital radio brand.

“Despite the volatile macro economy, the group remains well placed for further solid growth based on its active licensing pipeline, expected chip volume ramp and royalty growth, as well as the potential for PURE to exploit its strong product line-up and develop its new sales territories.”
