Apple today released the 32Gb iPod touch and the iPhone at 16Gb.  The sizes of the devices and the feature sets appear to be the same.  The prices for the higher capacities raise the bar to $499 for the top of the line for each model.

Apple Adds New iPhone & iPod touch Models

CUPERTINO, California—February 5, 2008—Apple® today added new models of the iPhone™ and iPod® touch which have double the memory, doubling the amount of music, photos and videos that customers can carry with them wherever they go. The revolutionary iPhone now comes in a new 16GB model for $499, joining the 8GB model for $399. iPod touch now comes in a 32GB model for $499, joining the 16GB model for $399 and the 8GB model for $299.

All iPhone and iPod touch models include the latest software enhancements announced last month including the ability to automatically find your location using the new Maps application*; create Web Clips for your favorite websites; customize your home screen and watch movies from the new iTunes® Movie Rentals. Both iPhone and iPod touch feature the world’s most advanced mobile web browser in the world with Safari™ and great mobile applications including Mail, Maps, Stocks, Weather and Notes.

Personally, I think it's a cop-out on Apple's part ( and my next phone WILL be an iPhone ), to not just make the capacities of the Touch and the iPhone on par. Sure, there's some extra real estate required to house the GSM chipset, the fact is that it's not THAT much that 32 Gb of flash couldn't be incorporated into the iPhone.

I also have to think there's no shortage of coincidence that this release was timed in conjuction with the imminent release of the iPhone SDK.

Having purchased the iPhone 20 days ago, I'm surprisingly not too chagrined.  Now had 3G/GPS been included it might be a different story. 

I think 32GB on the iPhone is the magic number I'm looking for.

I agree with the post about the iPhone and iPod not having the same capacities. They sure as hell could do it --- they just won't. Although this gives me something to gleam about (having a 16GB iPod Touch), I would be pissed if I were an iPhone suck... err.. I mean user.

And what about the price increase? Well I can't complain. Infact I think it's nice that Apple is not allowing the Jones' to get their 32GB iPod touch for the same price I got my (then highest end) 16GB iPod touch. So I'm still content to be a first-time iPod Touch user.

Hmmm... where was I going with this rant? I LOVE (the fact that I don't need to buy the next product through) Apple's new pricing and offerings!

When will the small addition of a pause/mute button be added to the touch?  I want to be able to start and stop the touch in my pocket without having to take it out.  As soon as that's added to the touch I'll be opening my wallet in a "flash"!

its not just space but cost and value for your money. If they both had the same capacity and cost the same then there isnt much incentive to get the phone. But if the capacities were different and the phone was another $100 more to cover the added value ( I said value not cost ) then again no one would buy the phone. By keeping the cost the same but lowering the value of the phone by limiting its capacity then you create a market that has choice and makes you really consider both. Without the touch then sure give the phone more memory but its too late now, the touch exists and they need to balance the two.

I want to know 2 things, one are they actually in stores today, and second I have an unopened 8 gig touch is it possible that apple will allow me to exchange it for the 32 gig if I pay the diff or do they keep track of the SN and will know that I bought it somewhere else.

The 32GB iPod Touch actually makes it very tempting as a purchase for someone who doesn't want the iPhone. I always felt 16GB was even too small for something without the phone capabilities.
