Intel's Otellini makes an anti-iPad promise.

Apple’s some time ally, Intel’s Paul Otellini, has vowed to use “all of the assets” at his company’s disposal to seize back leadership in the tablet market.

In an interview, Otellini took a moment to praise Apple’s achievements with its iPad, before making his promise to seize back the category through a series of Intel processor-powered partner devices.

“I know the big question on everyone’s mind is how Intel will respond to new computing categories where Intel currently has no presence, specifically tablets…We think tablets are exciting and fully welcome their arrival. Apple has done a wonderful job reinventing the category,” he said during an Intel financial earnings conference call last night.

“We believe that like netbooks, tablets will expand the term for computing overall with a new form factor and new uses that bring computing to even more aspects of our lives. Will they impact PC sales? Sure. At the margin, they probably will. Consumers will have a limited amount of discretionary income and some will choose to purchase a tablet instead of upgrading at existing PC or purchasing a netbook in any given period.”

Then he made his fightback promise,

“We will use all of the assets at our disposal to win this segment,” he said, adding that a number of tablet products will come to market “in the coming months and quarters” based on Windows, Android, and Meego operating systems “across a variety of form factors and price points.”

Intel will also ultimately integrate 3G and 4G–so-called baseband–wireless broadband silicon from Infineon into its Atom chip, the company said.
