We have received some information about the upcoming Apple laptops – we think they are MacBooks but aren’t 100 percent sure they aren’t the fabled Pro slim line.
What we know:

  • Black aluminum and silver aluminum (like MacBook Pros) have been seen
  • They are considerably slimmer than current MacBook and even a bit more than MacBook Pros
  • The screen reaches much closer to the edges than current MacBooks but is the same size as current MacBooks – indicating a somewhat smaller footprint
  • The keyboards resemble Apple’s new Bluetooth Keyboard
  • There is something strange about the touchpad (more on this to come)
  • While they are dense, overall they are lighter than the current MacBooks

What we are wondering:

  • Will there be colors like the Nanos? (Red) would be hott.
  • Will the SSD and memory be easily upgraded?
  • Will they be in the Pro or Consumer or totally new lineup?
  • Will they be released with the Leopard announcement?  Before Christmas?  Macworld?
  • Is Apple over White?
  • Touch interface?

Expect to hear more on this in the coming weeks and maybe even see a few spyshots around the web (Apple Lawyers: not here!).  Oh, and that keyboard picture?  We lifted that from Apple.com, it’s not from a MacBook.

  1. macmanager says:

Holy shit how do you guys always get this information 1st?! Is this the same source as the Nano and iPod Touch leaks?

    • macmanager says:

Ya, every time you guys seem to have more information about Apple releases before anyone else! I can’t wait to see this thing. I also wonder if they are going to be decreasing the size of their MacBook Pros to compete with Toshiba’s new thin laptop.

      Max … Out!

    • They were right about the iPod line-up and I sure hope they’ll be right about this as well.
Slimmer MacBooks would kick ass, so let’s just hope they’re not searing hot!

    • macmanager says:

God, I’ve been waiting for a 12-13″ intel macbook pro for 3 years! I’m about to break down and just buy a sony or toshiba.

Please Apple, don’t just make thin versions of the same things, make something smaller!

    • Yep, always first, as long as it’s between nine and five. :)

    • Johanna says:

Yah, I second that motion! I have read some info here that haven’t appeared on the Toshiba site yet. I’m really wondering if you guys can predict the future or something like that…

  2. commpott says:

you guys getting my favourite (t)rumor blog out there – that macbook change sounds pretty plausible and represents my thoughts on that issue. think they gonna get rid of white and met somewhere between the current pro lineup and the iphonish style. their product line was/is pretty disrupted design wise, but is certainly on its way getting some consistency back.

but what’s going on with the trackpad? I’d really like to see a multitouchscreen replacing the trackpad…

    • Karl says:

I’ve also been hoping for this.

    • Tom says:

Don’t hold your breath on the Multi-touch. Development for laptop use is still a while out, I’d guess about a year. Hell, just a couple of months ago, Jobs still wasn’t sure if Multi-touch is right for laptop use.

      • numpty says:

Multitouch is barely useful on the iPhone, I can’t see it being much use on any screen that’s bigger than your handspan. (In any case, if anyone ever puts their fingers anywhere near any of my screens I’ll go ballistic!)

      • Bug says:

Wait, the pads on MacBooks now aren’t multiple-touch?  They can detect whether 2 or 3 fingers are on the pad.

Oh, they can’t tell where all three of those fingers are, is that it?

  3. i was waiting this rumor!!!!
thats make me very happy, i gonna buy it immediatly…

you think that in paris expo will be announced?

  4. Nils says:

I like the white so much :( why no white :(

  5. iFrogey says:

As the Beatles once sang, “Let it be, let it be, let it beeeee, let it bee-hee!”

    This all sounds, a) plausible , b) likely & c) hugely desireable.

No way will they announce this in Paris. Apple would barely spit on the Paris Expo if it was on fire these days. Steve is more likely to come round my house and do it there.

More please, you big trackpad teasers that you are.

  6. Thomas says:

Aww too bad, I just loved the white MacBooks, I wanted to save for it, so I wonder what the future will bring us :/

  7. applemac says:

well i don’t see what else they could be doing at paris expo other than the macbooks because theyve already dealt with the iphone in america and uk, germany, france etc…

  8. Martin says:

they simply dont visit the expo.

  9. Inwit says:

I wonder if the new line of MacBooks will also loose the Apple key. Do you think´s there´s any intention that they left it out on the recently introduced keyboards?

    • dergraf says:

There never has been a key called “Apple Key”. It always has been called the “Command Key”, so it’s just logical to print “command” or “cmd” on it instead of the Apple logo.

I noticed a lot that people just did not know that the key with the Apple logo is called the Command key. So re-labeling the key is a good idea to make the Mac even easier to use.

      • wasabifan says:

The no Apple key comment is simply not true. In the past, there was an Apple key. Not only that, but if I recall correctly, prior to Macintosh, there was both an open-apple key and a closed-apple key (one outline, one filled in).

I think there are wikipedia entries on this, but I don’t have time to look them up. I just don’t want mis-information given out and taken as fact.

        • bitguru says:

“The no Apple key comment is simply not true. In the past, there was an Apple key.”

I think we can all agree that the key is still there. It just doesn’t have the apple symbol on it anymore.

In the past the key had both the quincunx (?) symbol and the Apple symbol. Now it has only the quincunx symbol. (Of course we’ll have to wait to see what the key looks like on these new MacBook things. So far the Apple symbol has been absent only from Apple’s new USB and Bluetooth keyboards.)

          • Ian says:

The symbol on the command key is not a quincunx. A quincunx is the ’5′ pattern on a die. I believe the clover/propeller symbol was found by an Apple programmer in a tourism book (from Sweden, I think), meaning "point of interest," and they decided to use it because the thought the command key was an interesting and unique Mac feature.

        • fak3r says:

I completely forgot about this until this post! My Apple //e had both the Open-Apple (next to the ‘power light’) and Closed-Apple keys on either side of the spacebar. I believe it was mapped to the buttons that you would have on a joystick (I had the Apple Joystick too). Here’s the Wikipedia History on the ‘command’ keys:

          ——————
The first model on which it appeared was the 1980 Apple III, where there are two Apple keys, both to the left of the space bar on the lowest row of the keyboard. Two other early Apple computers, the 1982 Apple IIe and the 1984 Apple IIc, also had two such keys, one to the left and one to the right of the space bar; in these models, they mapped to the two different fire buttons of an attached joystick. In all these cases, the left Apple key had an outlined “open” Apple logo, and the one on the right had an opaque “closed” Apple logo. The Apple Lisa had only the closed Apple logo. When the Macintosh was introduced in 1984, the keyboard had a single command key with a symbol reminiscent of a four leaf clover (?, U+2318), because Steve Jobs said that showing the Apple logo throughout the menus as a keyboard shortcut was “taking [it] in vain.”[1]

Thus, the ? appears in the Macintosh menus as the primary modifier key symbol.

You are right. Open and closed apple.

      • Sean says:

It’s a hold over from the Apple II days… when they were the Open-Apple and Closed-Apple keys. 8-bit Appleworks rocked! So… some of us oldtimers still say “Apple key”.

  10. macmanager says:

As always I’m not a 100% sure about you guys are telling me. Let’s sit back an drink some tea. Never expect too much so you can always be positively surprised.

  11. altehrwürdigerHindenburg says:

Ive been waiting for a rumor like this for a while now… i guess the Macbook Pro line is the most likely one to be upgraded and i would welcome it… Extraordinary gadgets like a “multitouchscreen”-trackpad would be awesome (though i couldnt quite imagine why…) and agressive pricing sounds just right…

  12. naraic says:

I hope this isn’t part of the Pro line-up. Dedicated graphics would be great, but that will undoubtedly make the laptop WAY more expensive. All i want is X3100..
Other than that, sounds PERFECT! HOTT =P

    • Apple MacBook says:

I doubt they will alter the price. Look at all the previous MacBook and MacBook Pro updates, in none of these updates did Apple raise the price – sometimes they actually lowered it.

  13. George Tang says:

Well, Apple indeed are dumping the plastic material on their product.

Just check the latest iPod Classic, they are indeed, silver brushed aluminum, and/or black brushed aluminum, also check the latest iMac.

    It’s silver with black.

    Look at the new keyboard.

So, I won’t guess wrong, that Apple will lunch new Macbook right with Mac OSX 10.5, and would be the best seller for this holiday season.

They might even come up with a promotion: “All-new-Macbook & iPod Classic”

    George Tang

  14. NcSchu says:

I’d be willing to bet that the trackpad integrates iPhone technology into it, though a lot of the “tricks” wouldn’t really be useful with a full screen.

  15. CyberGypsy says:

    Come on red macbooks!!!!!!

  16. Jake says:

No suprise really. It makes sense Apple would match the colours to the new iPod classics as the current MacBooks are to the fifth gen iPods. They seem to be phasing out their white hardware.

  17. macmanager says:

integrated graphics card of dedicated graphics card?… that is the question.

  18. James says:

I wish I could know what they plan on doing. I’m holding out for Leopard before I purchase a Macbook, but if this upgrade happens next year I’ll be less than happy! 10.5 + Updated Macbook would make me a very, very happy man!

  19. Eloy says:

I hope they release it with Leopard :)

  20. Little Stewie says:

OMG…..O…MY…GOD!!!! he he. my dreams are almost here. i mean, imagine yourself drinking a latte in one hand and “pinching” the new trackpad to zoom in on a photoshop document. he he. I wouldn’t have to set my cup down. MY DREAMS ARE ALMOST HERE!!!

    of course a couple demands:

new macbook NEEDS to be released in Q1 of 2008 for the following reasons (wishful thinking):

    1. new 45nm intel “penryon” chipset would help battery life in the new macbook. i would imageine a top ceiling speed in the new macbooks would be 2.6 or 2.5GHz. while reserving the 2.6 and above chips for the “pro” line.

    2. DEDICATED GPU please!!! everyone hates onboard video.
    3. any Leopard issues would be ironed out (hopefully no issues exist).
    4. get rid of the superdrive in the macbook!! if people want a ridiculous spinning drive that sucks up battery life (even not in use), provide a USB 2.0 option. most people nowadays use a network or the internet to move and backup data. who needs a drive anyway???
    5. 2GB RAM please!! upgradable to 4GB. PLEASE!!!
    6. color options (RED, RED, RED, RED) OMG

Apple, please do these things. i will lvoe you forever

  21. dudewithamac says:

My best guess is that they will launch a whole new Mac Pro line up at Macworld with OSX 10.5 and also release a new line of “slim” mac book/pro.

I’m with you James, I am waiting for the next Macbook pro update with OSX 10.5 before I upgrade.

  22. dudewithamac says:

how about a bluray drive in the next gen mac book pro?…….

  23. michaelper22 says:

Currently, I’m awaiting Leopard’s release for my MacBook purchase. Seems like I may be in for more than just a new OS version.

  24. Webomatica says:

I hope “aggressively priced” means sub 1,000. Could be possible as a “sub notebook”.

  25. Illuminated track pad perhaps? I know they have this patented…

    • Kev Orng says:

Am I the only one who thinks of medieval illuminated letters whenever anyone mentions an illuminated keyboard or trackpad?

Don’t get me wrong, I’d LOVE to have each letter on my keyboard painstakingly handpainted by Monks who make it their life’s work, but still… I think it might be just a little out of my price range. Probably wear out quickly too.

  26. macmanager says:

    TOTAL Speculation –

What if the trackpad had an LCD underneath, just as if an iTouch display was stuck below the keyboard…

(this idea is similar to the “Optimus” keyboard of recent fame).

What user interface miracle could Apple do with active graphics there?

  27. polarizer says:

Wondering where the information are derived from, but if it’s true appetizingly. Slim – yam yam – what stylish.

Need to start saving some bucks for it :O)

    my 2 cents – polarizer

  28. Derek Hagen says:

Will you guys, or anyone reading this, please come out with a rumor that Apple will put out a matte screen version of the new iMac? It doesn’t even have to be true, for God’s sake. Just give us something, anything, to hope for. If I could get a MacBook or MacBook Pro with an added 23″ Cinema display with the same specs as the iMac for the same price, I’d snap it up. Since that’s not going to happen, a matte iMac would be perfect. I can’t afford anything else and there are millions like me out there. So please put out the rumor even if there’s no chance of it coming true. Let me have hope in the rightness of the world for a few weeks longer, at least.

    • sumdumguy says:

      Okay,

Rumor: Matte screens for iMacs coming soon*.

      * Soon is defined as between now and the year 3968, though some sources indicate it might be another millennia after that.

      There, happy?

      • Kev Orng says:

I’d buy that if it has eyeball-tracking on the mouse arrow. The arrow follows your eye, blink to click. Use your nose as a multi-directional scroll wheel. Tell me it will have this!

And I want it to have a built-in Snoopy Snow Cone machine, and little robot feet so it can do a little dance whenever Steve Jobs is about to make some announcement.

And I want it to give me a running tally of how many of you actually blinked or manipulated your nose while reading my first paragraph.

now that would be the iMac for me.

    • macmanager says:

considering that the MacBook pro is already more expensive than an identically specced iMac, I’d say your hopes of getting the laptop AND a 23″ screen for the same price as an iMac are pretty slim.

  29. Ralfy says:

Just sold my iBook on ebay. Was waiting for Leopard to buy a MacBook. Maybe I will have to wait a little longer to get Leopard on the new improved MacBook.

  30. patireland says:

I’m a windows user, holding out to buy my first mac. As soon as these are released, I’m buying and making the switch. Can not wait!

  31. macmanager says:

Is it possible that they would release the macbook and not a macbook pro along with it? I think if they are gonna release one, they should release the other? I really hope there is a MBP update on the horizon, and not just a processor update, like I want it redesigned! PLEASEEEEEEEEE!!!

  32. macmanager says:

    white sucks

  33. booobiegoo says:

    light bucks

  34. rmg007 says:

Interesting that the Apple stores are rumored to be the exclusive sellers of the new Samsung laser printer, that is sleek and sexy, and . . . black.

  35. jimmy the pea says:

Several comments are flying around with regards to the track-pad being like the ipod phone/ipod touch … what about taking this back one step, what if the trackpad was an ipod phone/touch … they’re doing away with the optical drive and there was talk of them doing away with the cd drive which would leave a space to drop in an oversized flash drive or ipod phone in it’s place. You then have a smart track pad and removable modem/wi-fi/flash disk.

  36. macmanager says:

I think the current MBP Design seems really dated, it hasnt changed since the Powerbook G4.
Macbook got the new magnetic latch, the new keyboard + the new pro features like magsafe and isight. if macbook would be first to get new technology like multitouch trackpad and slimmer sleeker design I would feel really pissed as a pro user.
is the macbook selling significantly better than macbook pro or why does apple seem to support it more?

  37. turbo child says:

make 63 hours of love to a Macbook Thin. It’s all I’ve ever dreamed of. Just the thought of it has driven me to light another josstick in the Jobsy shrine.

  38. Marcin says:

The rumor that I’ve been waiting for.

It only makes sence that the MacBook would get a face lift like its cousin MacBook Pro or iMac. It seems that 90% of apples products now have the aluminum casings and high gloss finishes. I’m not to particualr on changes to the trackpad as long as it doesn’t make things worst for the end user I guess I’ll have to be fine with it. The touch screen is an ok idea but at the same time, I don’t think anyone using it for daily use will want to constantly cleaning the screen because their fingerprints are all over it.
They should announce the new line up along side the Leopard launch announcment later in October.

    Can’t wait to hear more!

  39. Zoobit says:

“They are set to be priced extremely aggressively”
Does this mean extremely cheap or extremely expensive?

    • Kev Orng says:

“Aggressive pricing” usually means very low pricing, as in “they are aggressively trying to enlarge their market share”

Basically when a manufacturer is doing something aggressively, it usually means aggressive to their competition, but good for the customer.

Kind of like how the current aggressively priced Core2Duo Dell laptops made me stop and think, how bad could Vista really be?” But I drank some Apple juice and the sensation passed.

  40. This MacBook would be simply best solution for all.

  41. Mr. Macallaster says:

New MacBooks with a visually distinguishable new feature such as a backlit trackpad, would be essential to Apple’s goal of attracting the young generation and ultimately taking over the laptop market, and eventually allowing for the unavoidable Apple/Windows merger. Yes this means no more Windows, only apples.

    How bout’ dem apples?

  42. macmanager says:

They should announce a whole new “Meet the new family” lineup with Leopard! A new macbook pro especially, and at the least! And then if they want macbook and the subnotebook. But we def. need a macbook pro facelift! And I think the perfect time for it is with the release of Leopard.

  43. macmanager says:

Yes, I too plan on switching from windows to leopard, but I really hope there is a dedicated GPU, so much so, because dedicated mean so much more versatility in applications, not to mention games. Or there should at least be a slim version with nvidia GPU

  44. LITTLE STEWIE says:

the new macbook will surprise many, but the really “WOW, I WANT THAT” will go to the macbook pro. the new ultraslim macbook will be the “macbook” as in, no optical drive, 13 inch GLASS screen with some kind of new trackpad. leave it at that. you people dreaming of a glitzy trackpad that only a windows based laptop would have (i.e. fignerprint login crap) and stuff alike, is crazy. Apple is about simplicity, not complexity. Apple also has a long track record of designing their products “less busy” than windows pcs.

i’m excited about the new lineup. the waiting is the only part that sucks…

—–the only thing that is good is we can all save to deck out our new macbooks or macbook pros. you need an extra $1000.00 to get the one you want. none of us want the baseline macbook/pro. 5 months from now (macworld), you’ll have enough money to buy the updated mac pro with a 30″ glass ACD.

  45. Sammy B says:

Things I would like to see in the new macbook:
    1. Leopard 10.5
    2. Thinner profile
    3. Aluminium casing (powerbook and mbp casings are nice!) and not having to pay more for anodized coloured versions!
    4. 11/12″ widescreen version (sounds like 13″ is the way tho!)
    5. ipod style controls on the outside of the case so you can play and control itunes with the top closed (maybe a small ipod size lcd display to show you an ipod interface to itunes. Or even a rotating multi touch display (which turns your macbook into a tablet…).
    6. Heat padding on the inside of the bottom of the case – cause laptops get soo damn hot these days.
    7. Multi touch capabilities of the trackpad (although i don’t see the relevance of making the trackpad any bigger?).
    8. Option to have simple pictures (like an apple tree!) laser etched onto the aluminium case when purchasing online – useless, but would be kinda fun!
    9. Ability to use your iphone/ipod touch as a remote for front row/keynote over the wifi interface etc…
    10. Easily accessable ram and HD bays (With room for 4gb ram!).
    11. GPS intergration.
    12. SIM card slot so you can actually use your lappy on the road for calls/msgs and edge/3g! Would be great for business users who have their laptops 24/7.
    13. Bluetooth so you can use a bluetooth headset when using your SIM card for calls – also good for skype!
    14. External superdrive (like the sony Vaio) so you don’t need to lug hardware around that you barely use! Also free’s up space for a second HDD (imagine 400gb macbook!).
    15. 1 grand pricepoint for mb and 2 grand for mbp (canadian).
    16. Glossy or matt screen option.

    That’s about it for now!

    • Kev Orng says:

“15. 1 grand pricepoint for mb and 2 grand for mbp (canadian).”

Does it really make a difference right now? The US dollar is so weak these days… I never thought I’d see them hit parity, but low and behold, I can exchange one Loonie for one Greenback today, for the first time in my life.

Unfortunately the Apple store, and for that matter, the rest of the retail world, is still pricing stuff based on 2003 exchange rates. Today, it does not make sense for me to NOT buy my MBP in Buffalo. Buy it, charge it up, find some wifi, sync it from dotmac, and when customs asks if I bought it in Buffalo, I say, what, this old thing? its got my email going back three years on it! and 800 Safari bookmarks, and a gig of documents and music and photos!

      • macmanager says:

Not so fast, oh Canada! You failed to take into account that Canada’s Customs agents have access to the United States’ massive Homeland Security databases, which in turn have access to every freakin’ database known to mankind. A few keytaps into, say, the databases that record your credit card purchases —or for that matter the database at Apple— will produce sufficient information about your purchase to justify them confiscating your computer, arresting you, and placing your entire family and all known friends onto a watch list of suspected scofflaws. (In Canada, people aren’t called “crooks,” but are known as “scofflaws,” which is a much kinder and gentler word for anti-social miscreant.)

Big Brother (“Le Gran Frère”) knows all.

  47. double.L says:

    guys, you gotta think!

Why the f*** is there coverflow in the new finder on 10.5?
Because it only makes sense with the new multitouchpads!

Did you ever had your fingers on either iPhone or iPod touch?
It is way beyond coverflow in iTunes. It really is magic, how you can flip through your album-art.
Imagine you could do the same with files on your finder! Or with photos in iPhoto!

This will just gonna complete the software features of 10.5 with the fitting hardware!

  48. kapeesh says:

so is the cost goin to be costly or the same as the present macbooks

  49. macmon says:

what exactly do they mean “agressive prices”?
cheaper or just around what it is now?
but damn this is like my dream come true…only sooner

  50. macmanager says:

Sorry wont buy it or a new imac because the keyboard sucks.

I hope they dont screw up the macbook pro in the future with that stupid damn chicklet keyboard.

  51. desimus says:

As an owner of a Powerbook G4 and now a new iMac I can say with most certainty the new keyboard is better. I’m looking forward to replacing my Powerbook with either this new “slim aluminum macbook” or a macbook pro at some point in the next year. (and one of the things I’m looking forward to is the new keyboard.

  52. gma says:

Apparently so, according to the marketing copy for the latest iMacs. Aluminum and glass are recyclable. Polycarbonate plastic (the white stuff)? Not so much.

  53. david thom says:

what if the touch pad was a touch screen

  54. macmanager says:

    What about eSata port?

  55. basie says:

i’m mad! i just bought a macbook, and now this happens!

normally i would be EXTREMELY skeptical, but you guys are right every time, even about the nano/shuffle colors which I thought was NEVER going to happen

    AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHH

  56. macmanager says:

It’s less convenient than just using your fingers, but you can simulate magnification as follows: enable zoom (universal access pref panel); then enable “zoom using scroll ball” (keyboard & mouse pref panel). Having the screen image move with the mouse pointer works well for high magnifications.

  57. driemon says:

    It’s very exciting!

But, I am waiting Macbook pro slim model!

  58. Zeke says:

Please tell me you’ll be able to two-finger scrolling with the flicking-and-stopping abilities of the iPhone… as much as I love the white MacBook, if this new one could scroll and zoom like the iPhone, I would buy it without thinking…

  59. macmanager says:

what does it mean by priced aggresively?

  60. macmanager says:

So Macs are now becoming a little more like the Sony Vaio SZ?

  61. macmanager says:

Does any body know when would Apple release the new Mac Books (If its not a rumour!!) ??

  62. mouztrpd says:

      Evident EVOLUTIONS
      to anyone with an IMAGINATION

RE announced release of OSX upgrade… OCT 07

In terms of apple executive $$$ decisions
It would be fooish for Apple to release a major OS upgrade
      without significant hardware redesigns….
the most obvious showcase / buy incentive for new OSX
      the NOTEBOOKS PRO and down…

Especially before the holidays…. (which is usually to ALWAYS when they release MAJOR OSX versions + hardware to go along with)

? why didn’t apple put the intel extreme chip in the JUNE release notebooks…
instead of the coreduo 2.4 max
      simply
because… they intended to wait… to release it within the notebooks…
closer to the holidays – when they also released the new OSX
      ALL of which…
= MORE POWER TO THE PUNCH
= MORE incentive to BUY big purchases = macbook pro etc
      = greater sales
      no matter WHAT

+ macbook pro is STILL their pride and JOY..
they will NOT LET TOSHIBA BEAT THEM TO THE
      THIN POWERFUL PUNCH!

      Speed and Power is essential
      and…
      THIN IS IN
      THEY CAN DO IT
And so they HAVE DONE IT

and so I agree — VonCheech
      complete new “notebook” line up
“the line up will be macbook mini, macbook, macbook pro.
      simplify. i have spoken….”

the newest intel chips… are designed for faster speeds, better power consumption / conservation…. which means less space needed to

      BE COOL

and don’t give apple ALL the credit
other companies they have partnered with / buy resources from
      have made their evolutions HAPPEN
      and don’t forget

what would APPLE be without ALL of us TOO

move all components to the screen in a iMac fashion so you can have simply the iMac-like keyboard with the ability to be desatached from the screen for a more comfortable use.

  73. macmanager says:

well new macbooks would be nice but i agree with alot of other user here that the macbook pro is really where the facelift needs to be placed. I’m thinking somewhere along the lines of:
    15/17 inch screen smaller/thinner enclosure.
Aluminum casing in both regular silver and black…blackbook pro: )
    4 gb of ram
250 GB minimum, 500 maximum hard drive.
Better processors (hopefully the new intel 2.6 and 2.8 GHz chips).
    Glass screens.
    2 megapixel camera for iSight
    and of course OSX 10.5

and on another note i seriously doubt that multi touch will come to a laptop anytime soon and definitly not a macbook. Multi Touch is great for machines that are small enough to not have a keyboard and mouse/trackpad thats actually funtional. Also the multitouch technology is good for a phone or even a game system as the nintendo ds because those are things with constantly changing input styles almost every make/model of cellphone has a different menu system than the others and every video game has a different layout of controller but computers have been using the same keyboard layout and mouse functionality since before i can remember so to put multi touch into such a widely used thing such as a computer would be foolish. Even Jobs sayed at this point its just a experiment. maybe in a few years but not anytime soon.

  77. Rotten to the Apple Core says:

They are probably sketching these ideas from the forth-coming macbook. I doubt that this is top secret, or come as any real surprise that the new macbooks will come in the ipod-classic colours.

Something strange about the touchpad – That’s a bit TOO ambiguous don’t you think?

Anyway, essentially you’re telling us “There is a new macbook 13″ on the way with ati graphics, it will be in the standard silver and black colours. It will also be aluminium.”

Sounds like a nice little “One more thing…” for Steve to announce in November.

  78. rhb says:

I know I’m in the minority, but I’ve never liked touchpads. I’ve always preferred the old IBM ThinkPad “eraser”-style cursor control…I have that now in my HP notebook at work.

I’m about to jump to Mac for the first time. Would love to see the 13″ Macbook add a little more oomph and an ExpressCard slot (to handle broadband card). That would make it a must-buy for me.

  79. newmacguy says:

  80. Timothy says:

There is something strange about the touchpad (more on this to come)

How about there is none. If you want a small form factor notebook computer with a full size keyboard, there might not be room for a trackpad. (See Lenovo’s ThinkPad X models.) So how about a space saving TrackPoint instead? Please, Apple, offer your subnotebook with the space efficient TrackPoint. Give consumers another choice.

Apple store went down about a half hour ago as I was preparing to checkout (new macbook). I wonder if I just dodged a bullet?

  83. motojourneys says:

    The Trackpad…

I’m hoping it’s not a super-huge trackpad–that’s a little annoying for me. My 15″ MBP’s trackpad is plenty big. Combination of touchscreen/touchpad would be nice–like IBM’s thinkpad; except instead of an eraser, you just smudge the screen up…glass would probably increase the cost though…

Remember the patent that they released a bit ago? The one about interchangeable hardware interfaces? “Hey, it’s a QWERTY keyboard–now it’s a MIDI keyboard…”

Or something along the lines of VISTA’s (yes, I know, I hate Microsoft too…) ability to display functional data on a smaller display–the trackpad is actually a small touchscreen LCD! Woot! That rotates when not in use so it’s on the outside–creating an extremely heavy (but always available) .MP3/.AAC player!

It seems like they would certainly go down this road, especially after the last iMac update when Jobs spoke of wanting to do away with plastic and make most products from Aluminum and Glass. Thus, being that the MacBooks are the last plastic products, they’d most likely be the next ones to see an upgrade/redesign. I hope that they’ll do it with the Leopard release, so I don’t have to wait soo much longer for one.

I hear alot of people mentioning that apple would upgrade the powerbook before the macbook. In my opinion i think they’ll upgrade the macbook first. Apple seem to be making everything aluminium now, and it’s only the macbook left to convert.

I’m a PC user, waiting to buy a macbook. I’ve got to wait until November anyway to buy one so i was initialy anticipating the arrival of Leopard to try out in my apple store. I’m now hoping the new macbook will be out before then! I think i would definetly wait until early next year if they plan to release it then, though.

  97. Anonymous says:

  98. Anonymous says:

the new macbook will be somewhere in betwen the mb and mbp line, this will be the new layout of the family :P the mbp pro will be the sophisticated professional, with some extra upgrades and totally redefined, the mb will be the easy going student with several touchups for the needs of the new generation e.g. larger hard drives more ram, and the slim mb will be somewhere in between, it will contain a solid state drive and 3 gb of ram upgradable to 5gbs the hard drives will be available in 60 and 120gb and the superdrive will be external

    • Anonymous Coward says:

November 6.  The Macbook release will of course be kept very quiet, they are using Leopard to help push the last of the inventory of current Macbooks.  I have no idea how far the new model will go but I expect it to be rather modest and very hush hush.  Most people will never even know they didn’t get the latest and greatest and they honestly don’t care!  For those of us that keep up, it’s best to hold out for another week or two and get an upgrade (with a hopefully reduced price for the holidays!).  I’m also holding out to buy, I was waiting for Leopard but I can wait a little longer for more memory (dear god, please upgrade the IG!) and possibly an LED backlit screen (better battery life).  MBP will be in January.  Aluminum makes a lot of sense at the moment though, and I would love to see that happen, but I am not getting my hopes up…

That article regarding the rumour of the new MacBooks didn’t say that a new design won’t be released.  It said, "these expectations don’t entirely correlate with September rumors of a slim aluminum MacBook arriving soon."

I expect a new MacBook to be released next week, and I will be getting one.  I expect them to be slightly faster with a slightly larger hard drive to accommodate Leopard better.  They may or may not be in a slimmer aluminium form.  That’s how I read that article.

i also heard that some new imacs have som kinda problems but i’m not sure

    anyway,
it seems that last year apple has some troubles with the new products
they tend to fix everything when the internet is just going crazy with problems that people have after half’a'month of using new apple products…
what to expect from the new mb ?
i’m a bit afraid to buy it just after release you know what i mean…
what if it has some probs that cannot be fixed with updates
i mean some people still use those first cduo macbooks that you can make an amlete on
especially if they release it with touch screen or something, there might be some probs with that, cause it’s kinda new innovation into laptops

It’s faily ridiculous that Apple updates a product twice a month. I wondered the last days when the next update could be possible…

Since theres been so much talk about the things that somebody saw, its quite clear that there is something coming. MacBook Pro-updates for Penryn will come propably on MacWorld’08. Either they will introduce a small Pro (which then would’nt be “extremely priced”) or have a fair upgrade for both MacBook and -Pro with Penryn for Pro and alu for MacBook while the “strange thing about the trackpad” will appear on both.

Look at the IBM X61, Vaio TZ and Toshiba R500. Arguably, that is a niche apple should soon invest in. I’ll go for a Vaio unless Apple comes up with a true ultraportable:

    Screen
    - LED backlit widescreen w/ embeded iSight
    - 13 inch wide (or less)

    Keyboard and Trackpad
    - New gen Trackpad MultiTouch with "pinch" mode enabled among others
    - Bluetooth-style keyboard

    Processor, Memory
    - Low Voltage Core2Duo
    - 64 GIG SSD optional

    Size, shape and look
    - Black and grey alu finish case
    - Less than an inch thick
    - Weighs under 3 pounds

i think people at apple a laughing right now when they think of people using traditional keyboards and mice. i think they have developed a new user interface for what we call desktop computer. the only problem is how to get us to use the new technology, if they would have shipped already what they have in mind to sell in a couple of years, ppl would have probably said: bahhh thats nice but i’m better off with my keyboard, i’m faster, i’m more secure bla bla and nobody whould give a **** about it (like the newton). they have learned from mistakes, therefore they have to get us used to the new way of handling a computer, they have startet with the iphone and ipod touch, and step by step we’ll see new devices that leads us to the new user interface between computers and us. i guess MWSC08 will show one of these new devices. but thats only my 2 cent ;)

I’ll make a guess out there – the touchpad is going to become more than just a mouse pad. It’s going to allow new actions (i.e. grow, shrink, zoom in/out, etc.). At the end of the day making the macbook a full touch interface wouldn’t work unless they revamped OSX.

    • Maybe, the multi touch thing will be in Mac OS 10.6, or even Mac OS 11. Apple might even make an operating system completely different from Mac OS so they can keep the type of computers they make now.

I really hope it will be out by x-mas and that it will be cheaper but its most likely too late for them to announce it so it can be ready by christmas.

  155. Waiting Patiently says:

I am pretty set on getting a new Macbook for Christmas this year but after I read this thread I am worried about buying one and then a new model coming out only a short time later.  Any new information on whats going on with these new models?  Also are they going to be way more expensive than the current Macbooks?  I was looking at the black model for $1499 so if these new ones are way more expensive I might as well just go ahead and get the current MB.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  164. The original MacBook was released on May 16, 2006 and utilised the Intel Core Duo processor and 945GM chipset, with Intel’s GMA950 integrated graphics on a 667 MHz front-side bus. Later revisions of the MacBook moved to the Core 2 Duo processor.

The point of the new aluminum casing on all products is to eliminate the usage of PVC. The new macbook 13/15/17 will sport aluminum as part of this “green” effort. You don’t need to be a genius to know this is to be achieved before the end of 2008.

What you’re not saying is that the new macbooks will have glass screens as well.

  166. Alex902 says:

Hey! Is the price of the new macbook going to be higher? Please, if you know, tell me! Thanks!

  167. To reduce the computer’s size and weight, Apple omitted certain features long standard on its laptops. It is Apple’s first notebook since the PowerBook 2400c without a built-in removable media drive
