Apple has just released iOS 4.01 as a free software update for all iPhone users. The free update promises to fix the antenna “death-grip” issue which is supposedly related to a math formula malfunction regarding the the display of the iPhone’s service signal bars. It’s still propagating in iTunes. You can get the update right now via these links:

iPhone 4 – 4.01

iPhone 3GS – 4.01

iPhone 3G – 4.01

iPad – 3.2.1:

The iOS software update shows slightly changed signal bars with the first three being taller in size. In many places, users have noticed that their service appears to be 1-3 bars lower than before the change.

Good update, I’m still getting four out of five bar in my area. Don’t know if it solves the “Death-Grip” issue because I’ve never had that problem.

    Jailbreak in 3…2…?

iPad is still not remembering hidden WEP networks. Trying a network reset.

      Nope :/

    • Margie says:

Ouch, WEP network? Goodness, your employer has to get out of 2002. After all, WEP affords no security. WPA2/AES all the way.

Heck, quality 802.11n access points can be readily found for under $30. No more excuses – junk the 802.11b gear.

The update does not mention anywhere let alone promise to fix the antenna issue as stated in your article:”The free update promises to fix the antenna “death-grip” issue”. C’mon 9 to 5.. You should know this stuff.

Apple has maintained that these two “issues” are separate. They expressed that the “death-grip” is in fact not an issue but a normal event that occurs while holding any cell-phone the “wrong” way.

This update is to resolve the erroneous coverage indicator which had been reporting a stronger signal than it should have been.

Whoopie! Now I can fewer bars in more places! No difference on death grip though – goes from 4 to 1 instead of 5 to 0 – how quaint!

Just done the update on my 3GS. I’m on O2 in the UK.

First thing I noticed is how much quicker it switches to 2G when in a weak 3G area.

If I death grip (hate that phrase) the 3GS it flicks to 2G so much quicker than before.(in a weak 3g area)

Not that I’m bothered as I’ve never had a dropped call. Plus when the phone is next to my ear I have no idea how many bars it’s showing anyway !

What’s the difference with the iPad update?

I think my 3G is running a little bit faster with 4.01. Thats cool…
