Here we go again. The new 17 inch MacBook Pros seem to be having some video issues. The crux of the problem is that the when 9600M not embedded video card is being used, the thing gets a little hot. So hot, in fact, that weird things start happening to the video (see picture). A work around found on Apple's Forums is artificially kicking the fan in at a lower temperature with SMC fan tools. These need to be reconfigured after every restart - but obviously until Apple kicks in some update, this is the best option you have. NVIDIA and Apple are so far quiet but look for a Unibody firmware update that kicks in the fans a little earlier in the overheating process. Soon, hopefully!

There were similar issues with the MacBook Airs last year.

MAC Book PRO issues
You fanboys have to take some salt with this one:
This is happening to thousands of these MAC Book PROS. It's all over the boards, and everyone is up in arms. I was at the local Apple store and all their MACS were all doing this. The worker told me he got 500 returns within the past two hours, and so they instituted a 45% off program immediately, which was authorized by Steve Jobs himself. The brought in a news crew, which made a 20 minute with livid soccer moms and latchkey dads screaming like little girls on acid. One unhappy customer threatened a Genius with a knife he purchased at the cutlery store across the way, but fortunately it was sharpened improperly so it didn't do any damage.
This video problem happens to mine, too. Apple should give us all a $1000 rebate, plus a MAC-Book AIR, because its ruining my business, which was otherwise successful. No wonder Citi dropped their expectations on Apple.
I heard that Frontline is doing a two hour expose on this one, to be broadcast next week on PBS. It's a severe issue, and with Steve-o not around, everything is going to hell.
I understand that it's more than a simple fan issue - the screen itself heats up due to the LED technology which runs very HOT, like a propane stove. The real fix is that Apple will need to add another fan to the screen itself, replacing the otherwise useless glowing Apple logo, which just generates additional heat - it glows due to radiation. I don't think they can do that so easily, and so all these machines have to go back to the factory in Asia where they made the error.
Just kidding.

What program would be great to make go hot?
As someone asked before cause wanna know too.
modifying fan speeds
well. i saw on a website that there are apps that modify the running speed of the fans. e.g. having the fans start to go higher at a lower temp.
i have 2 websites of such apps here

To those asking about how to
To those asking about how to tax the system. Chose the 9600 GT card in your Energy settings, then go to say Apple's HD gallery and get 3 or 4 HD video looping for about 10 mins. Raised my temps to near 90C fans were going full but I had zero issues with my GPU, ran perfect. Good Luck.
thanks alot! I'm going to do
thanks alot! I'm going to do some testing. I didn't know apple had a HD movie gallery.
TEST
looped like 4 HD movies in 1080 and so far so good for about 20min. fans kicked in pretty much as expected.
was wondering how long did it take before display started to go bonkers for other users?
