Update: Shocker…they’ve been pulled from Ebay.

Well looky what we have here.  Someone has put up two semi-working iPod touches WITH cameras and a development version of the iPod OS on Ebay.  They are marked with ‘DVT-1′ and  ’DVT-2′, ‘Apple Development Team’ and one is running some sort of ‘switchboard’ OS window.

Yes, we put our bid in but we have a feeling that Apple is going to be the ‘High bidder’ on this one.  Perhaps you’d like to pull a Gizmodo and contact the seller before Apple wakes up?

You’ll recall that prototype images of the iPod touch with video camera surfaced on the web before the September announcement where they were conspicuously camera-less.  Production problems were rumored and Steve Jobs later said it was impossible to get a camera in a device so thin.

Thanks Mime454!

Looks pretty legitimate, especially the fact that the one is running strange software. Probably a very early development version of OS 4.0.

    • Violian says:

The whole camera-spiel on the iTouches is legit – I have an iLuv 3rd gen iPod Touch case that even has a hole for a camera on the back. I bought the case back in 2009 at Marshalls and is still in packaging and everything. I’m sure manufacturers wouldn’t have went the go-ahead to just start manufacturing based on speculation alone.

    • 9to5Mac Noob says:

These are not the only ones out there either. I have heard of soemone trying to sell one near me but the asking price is rediculously high!

Looks like apple’s control over witholding leaks is slipping

  2. 9to5Mac Noob says:

Got a feeling Skankphone will be a popular app…

    • Chris says:

      Chatroulette was taken.

    • 9to5Mac Noob says:

Remember the SkankPhone on the prototype iPhone that got out before (the working one)? It’s just a substitute for the OS (some people say it’s snappier and looks nicer, but…)

  3. FedaqSeko says:

Legitimate. That OS is what the hardware team gets to test – they don’t get to see the actual software, just like the hardware team doesn’t get to see the actual hardware. It’s a tradition since the original iPhone.
Those are special diagnostic and testing applications you see.
It’s interesting those leaked out and escaped destruction – just like those that appeared a while back.

  4. 9to5Mac Noob says:

The leaked iPhone 4G had DVT written on it as well. Gruber explains: “DVT” stands for “design verification test”, an Apple production milestone. The DVT milestone is very late in the game.

    “We put our bid in”

9to5mac fishing for stolen property? Nice. Don’t think 9to5mac can condescend gizmodo if you’d do checkbook journalism too.

    • 9to5Mac Noob says:

This. It’s reasonable to believe that Apple wouldn’t sell their prototype devices, therefore, whomever is selling them does not have Apple’s concent.

I’d be very wary about purchasing this, as it could put you in the same legal issues as Gizmodo.

“This listing (250617991364) has been removed”

    Nice.

  9. Maflife says:

It’s no longer available on ebay. Someone got to it.

  10. 9to5Mac Noob says:

That move was probably to piss off Steve Jobs more than anything. Doubt anyone in their right mind would think they could pull this off.

  12. 9to5Mac Noob says:

I heard Steve Jobs say that a Apple couldn’t get s still camera in the iPod NANO because it was so thin; when did he say a camera would not fit in an iPod Touch?

    • 9to5Mac Noob says:

The current camera in the nano is barely passable for video, and certainly unreasonable for stills. Sticking it in the touch wont be impressive until a better camera is available that fits the device profile.

      • mario31 says:

agreed the nanos camera has a very senstive mic, if you record a video in a quiet surrounding you get anoyying intermitent buzzzing sounds and if your record a loud object (i.e freight train) the audio gets distorted. i figure the nano was used as test, it makes no sense to put camera in them, gotta wonder if they remove the camera in the 6th gen?

  13. 9to5Mac Noob says:

Your bid is “9to5Mac” ? You’re willing to sell them the whole website for an iPod prototype ?? LOL

    • Jack says:

      Are you retarded ?

      • 9to5Mac Noob says:

It was a joke you silly moron, he made a j-o-k-e. See who’s retarded now ?!

        • sexJello says:

I’m sure he asked if you were retarded because that joke was so incredibly not-funny only a complete retard would waste the time posting it :)

          • 9to5Mac Noob says:

Wow. You amateur cum licking homos are completely humorless. The joke was they printed 9to5Mac on the “your bid” field in the screenshot, is it really THAT HARD to understand ? Why don’t you just go commit suicide ? This world will be a slighttttly better place than a couple of less stupid faggots !

  14. 9to5Mac Noob says:

My Android Eris has a 5 mega pixel camera with zoom and auto focus, its just as thin if not thinner the the new iPod Touch.

  16. AriX says:

Definitely real. I have personally used some of this prototype software before (except much older- it was pre-1.0 OS) including BurnIn, Operator, and SkankPhone.

Operator is a test suite that automatically tests several of the internal components of the device (seen here, mislabeled as BurnIn: http://theiphonewiki.com/wiki/index.php?title=Image:1.jpg)

BurnIn is a much more comprehensive testing suite that is fully automatic. It tests components like NAND, RAM, and various system functions like reboots: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oPpTROJ48aQ
It then dumps you into Operator on completion.

SkankPhone is a program with integrated mini-apps that show basic components of the phone. There is a phone component for making phone calls, a test thing for the camera, a HORRIBLE web browser, a media player that doesn’t seem to work (probably because I didn’t install the prototype OS correctly), a few simple games/tests, and a bunch more.

Unfortunately the prototype iPhone software I used to have running on my iPhone 1G has become corrupt somehow; eventually I’ll reinstall it and make a YouTube video showing off SkankPhone and the pre-1.0 OS.

  17. 9to5Mac Noob says:

This is definitely fake. I purchased a replacement housing from China for my iPhone and it had the same ugly home button. It looked identical in every way to my iPhone and had all the exact dimensions. The only thing off was that the home button line was thicker and more round. I immediately noticed that in these pictures. They likely put some hardware into the case drilled a hole in the back and put a camera part there.

  18. 9to5Mac Noob says:

Picture proof theyre fake! Photo comparison with chinese replacement part!

You guys missed the prototype iPhone sale on ebay a few days ago. It never went down. First gen phone; sold for $300.

Hold on a second. I wonder if Gray Powell also had a bag of developmental iPod touches with him that night at the bar that night… Dooh!

    Hahaha

  21. HmmApple says:

I think this is done by Apple to confuse people about the previous iPhone prototype leak

  22. 9to5Mac Noob says:

I’ve never understood why the iPod Touch uses a metal back round with a plastic piece for the back. Why not just make the back plastic? It’s better for reception and for scratches.

    ~fin~

  23. I check the serial number of the product (9C9370056K2) and found that it is a 3rd gen iPod touch. It wasn’t registered.

  24. 9to5Mac Noob2 says:

Considering that the guy has captured the images with a pretty neat compact camera(reflected on back of the iPod), they seem to blury to be real.

  25. they look real, but whats going on at apple that all these prototype are getting released, free media?

  26. 9to5Mac Noob GT says:

    Did they get the seller?

  27. Joe Jobs says:

So guy’s what happen when you woke up? Realized that this is just fake?

Just ask your self 1 simple question:

Why is that picture with camera is cut in half?

I totally understand that there are some morons that can’t take good pictures , but come on if my Grandma would had iPod Touch 4.0 with Camera.

1.She would take Chantix or some anti-depressant medicine so her hands wouldn’t shake
    2. She would go to BestBuy but the most expensive DSLR with Tripod
    3. Took about 100 pictures from each mo-fo angle.
    4. Took the DSLR and Tripod back to Bestbuy and say , sorry pictures are blury.
    5. Contact Gizmodo and Engadget at the same time and request $6.000 and NOT put the sh** on Ebay because they charge for posting pictures.

Well that’s just what my Grandma would do (She said)…

    • 9to5Mac Noob says:

      Your Grandma, My friend….

Is officially smarter than ANYONE who has accidentally stumbled across the new 4G iPhone/iTouch.

      Wish I had your grandma…

  28. 9to5Mac Noob says:

looks like another piece of apple junk.

  29. Brandon says:

anyone who fell for this is stupid. There is no picture showing the camera. If someone was selling this it would be very expensive and they would be proud to show the camera
