The Wall St. Journal today reviews some of the advertising deals that are accompanying upcoming iPad magazine and newspaper publications out there.
Time magazine has signed up Unilever, Toyota Motor , Fidelity Investments and at least three others for marketing agreements priced at about $200,000 apiece for a single ad spot in each of the first eight issues of the magazine’s iPad edition, according to people familiar with the matter.
Conde Nast also has some big publishers lined up as do other publications including the Wall St. Journal. iPad advertising looks to be creating an entirely new ad market; one with totally new “in-app” capabilities, yet without a hint of Adobe’s Flash.
The video above shows how one agency is trying to capitalize on iPad marketing.
You aren’t alone if you are annoyed by the narrators of that video.

I want to kill those people. That girl needs to get punched in the face with that voice
Nothing wrong with her voice, and she’s actually pretty….not sure what your problem is. You’re probably a hillbilly from the back woods of Appalacia not a sophisticated New Yorker!
HTC FTW = http://themegagigwondertron.blogspot.com/2007/09/fck-iphone-htc-ftw.html
How interesting that the guy/gal who wants to “kill those people” & “punch that girl” is also an iphone hater.
He/she clearly needs a hug
Wow. Did anyone else watch that and instantly say “Screw these guys”?
It really bugs me when these slick ad types claim to have it “all figured out”. The ipad hasn’t even launched.. No one knows what will work!
Does this mean that magazines will be distributed by the iBook store and not as a separate app?
If so, yes!
Does this mean that magazines will be distributed by the iBook store and not as a separate app?
If so, yes!
How degrading are the narrators – looking down upon the viewer? Who exactly is it aimed at?
Those two look like they just had a fight and are trying to hold it together for the camera. So, um…what the hell did I just watch? Did anyone get any useful info out of this? I got a headache from the annoying corporate music loop and went bleary-eyed watching nearly 3 minutes of pretty much nothing.
They sound like they invented this wonderful digital magazine to be used on any tablet/slate including iPad. If not because of the introduction of iPad, they won’t even have a spot of time to talk about their non-sense.
PLEASE INTEGRATE MAGAZINE APPS INTO THE iBOOKSTORE DIRECTLY… I DON’T WANT TO HAVE TO VISIT THE APP STORE for a book, when I get a load of other books from the iBookstore …
OMG, they really need to get some better speakers if they want to get any information to a viewer. Seriously, I was so distracted by the horrible inflections in their voices that I really have no idea what they said. Certainly I will not go back and watch it again to try to figure it out. Whoever made this ad really dropped the ball.
This video (and, probably, the whole iPad) is like a throwback to nineties to me. I have never bought a lifestyle magazine since 1999.
They are telling us that emulating printed paper on a monitor is the future? I don’t think so…
Not the most exciting clip, but it is rather intriguing to see interactive advertisements like the Dentyne Ice ad! They are correct, it’s this type of interactive advertisement that will interest readers and convince advertisers to design new and creative ads for the device. I’m excited to be able to ditch my Maxim Magazine print subscription for a fully interactive, monthly subscription-based service!
Ummm, yea.
A fully interactive “10 Hottest Babes of the Year”. I think I would be interested.
Lads mags ? i highly doubt they will be allowed on
sucks
If it’s at the newsstands now, and not covered in black plastic to hide naughtiness
…. then I’m sure it stands a good chance at being available on the iPad. Maxim included, even though it’s content is on the edge, it doesn’t go over into smut territory. I’m looking forward to the idea of magazines being available on the iPad. There’s some art mags that I hardly ever purchase because they’re from overseas and they’re $15-$20, digital mags can break down those barriers and be available without the “imported” price. I also look forward to car mags, it’s going to be so cool to have video and sound in something like Car and Driver.
Hmmm, maybe Car and Driver and Maxim will “get together”; can you say hookup ?
That way they can have some features like the original C&D “back in the day” when there were drivers that were shown along with the autos. “10 Hottest Cars and Their Hot Drivers”. (WooHoo, hello Danica !)
Yep, I’m in with that. Fully interactive of course.
The art mag idea sounds solid also. This is going to be some fun.
Ah, the advantages of a computer without sound. I’m pretty sure missing out on the voices more than made up for not knowing what was actually said.
Regardless though, that woman looked so angry she was on the verge of tears. Whatever her voice was saying, her body language and facial expressions were saying “I hate everyone and everything.”
And whoever messed with the saturation made it look like one of those tragic please-feed-the-starving-children ads.
I think the screen format was chosen exactly for content, or at least for that type of content most likely to be viewed on the iPad. The screen is too wide for you to zoom your browser window to fill all that space, and it looks like you’re wasting a lot of free space because of the tyranny of the wide screen.
I’m wondering if Toyota’s ads (if they’re moving video) will be set to automatically loop to start & therefore be unstoppable or just get faster and faster as you view the page…
“so much more” seems to be the iPad “catchphrase”. Oddly enough it only sounds somewhat true when used by an Apple exec. This lady makes it sound plain dumb.
IPad is bad
Lemme see now… with an iPad, I can read a newspaper with just awesome interactive ads, except none of those ads have been created yet, and newspaper staffs are so decimated now that there’s nobody left to write the stories any more, let alone sit around dreaming up ways to add video to a story rushed into print without anybody proofreading it because, you know, the last proofreader was laid off two years ago. And with the economy in total shambles and nobody in Washington having the slightest clue, or even interest, in fixing it, who exactly has the money to buy one of these toys in the first place? Sure, they have plenty of time to play around with it, as they sit online at the Unemployment Office, but who can afford to buy the apps?
I can see it now… I’m reading the latest George R. R. Martin boon on the iPad, I flip the page and instead of seeing the next page in the book I’m presented with an add for the upcoming HBO TV-Series of the Book. Hmm… Not sure how I feel about that yet but my guess is Apple is going to get rich(er) off the iPad.
