Businessweek reports today that an elite group of developers have received iPads to test their applications on, however, these iPads must be kept tethered to a fixed object and in rooms with blacked-out windows.
Would-be testers of the tablet-style computer, due to be released Apr. 3, must promise to keep it isolated in a room with blacked-out windows, according to four people familiar with the more than 10-page pact that bars partners from disclosing information about the iPad. To ensure that it can’t be removed, the iPad must also remain tethered to a fixed object, said the people, who asked not to be named because their plans for the iPad have not been made public. Apple won’t send out an iPad until potential partners send photographic evidence that they’ve complied.
Our immediate reaction to this is: What does Apple want to hide at this point? Haven’t we seen the iPad in its final form from a hardware perspective? From a software perspective, what is so interesting that they need developers to hide it? This level of secrecy on something already announced piques our interest.
The WSJ is one of the companies who has the iPad under lock and key as outed by Rupert Murdoch himself…among other things, though they’d be an unlikely source for a Bloomberg leak.

Hmmmmm can’t wait to get mine.
Jobs has just gone off the reservation fully now is all
ITZ TEH CAMERAZ 4 VIDEO CHAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
no one is commenting on the Hulu-on-iPad image? Of course it is fake but throw me a bone!
I know my staff would buy plenty of these babies if they had cameras for VTC.
” This level of secrecy on something already announced piques our interest.”
That’s the whole point – nothing to see here – move along. In fact, if it were so highly secure, the developers would be prohibited from even speaking about the protective measures. This is yet another deliberate leak by Apple’s marketing machine. Bored now.

maybe that’s why they pull these stunts
No doubt, the real iPad magic appears to be in the marketing a mystique.
They are not hiding the iPad… they are hiding the “Elite” developers, to avoid from being kidnapped by Steve Ballmer driving one of that black van we all see in our preferred series..
To bad they didn’t use this kind of marketing back in the 80′s-90′s. Perhaps I would not have to use a 10 year old Winblows OS at work then, and would be using a MAC! (Linux, OS X, Android, anthing but Winblows!).
I just can’t wait, until the 1ST high tech firm, tears the iPad, down, and discloses, what probably is a lousy A4 SoC,chip(probably Cortex A8,not Dual-core Cortex A9,like Nvidia Tegra2) performance-wise. Apple and Jobs, has just optimized a low-level 3.2 OS, for fast performance, on very basic sub-computer tasks. Waiting,…to see how “all this plays out.” This device sequestering, with “closed windows,” seems to reflect, a very narrow ecosystem. Apple seems, like Google, egotistical and power-hungry for that almighty dollar. Sad scenario.
Ya, a corporation that’s only after a buck, sad huh? What planet are you on. And I suppose you don’t spend most of your life working a job you don’t want for things you don’t need? And I suppose you don’t support any of there’s corporations by only buying from small companies. Corporations may only look after themselves but has the world set any other example to follow? We all look after our own, corporations are just realy good at. I’m not saying it has to be this way but it’s starts with the people.
You both are wrong. A Total Quality culture, not sure if Apple really subscribes to this or not, is really what makes a great company. Its a complicated set of guidelines and rules to run a company by. And its not necessarily all about a short term profit.
They’re only hiding the device so curiosity build up..and you know what! its actually working….I’m even more curious to see some ipad specific apps in action..and hell yeah I wanna know what the ‘elite’ developers are working on!
How is it tethered?
There is no security lock.
Either it’s a virtual tether or they are duct taped to the table.
I think it’s not marketing. It leaves a bad impression on me anyway… lock and key?
This is just fanatical Jobs. He doesn’t want anyone seeing it until it is released. They do this with everything they sell.
The security isn’t all that great. A friend who works in a school got her hands on one when a kid, who’s dad is a developer, brought it to school. She said it was a delight though she only got to use it for a couple of minutes.
Talking about this subject, does anyone know if the iPad has a Kensington lock port on it? I looked at pictures, but don’t see any, and it’s not mentioned. I want to bring mine to work and keep it locked when I’m away from my desk since I can’t just put the iPad in my pocket.
from the spec I don’t see any Kensington… but could be a good call for the accessories’s producer… a kensington like with a 30pin connector. If you unplug or cut… it starts to scream…
Piqued whose interest?
Does anyone remember the iPhone launch? Neigh an individual outside of Apple touched an iPhone until 6 PM EST June 29, 2007.
I wouldn’t say that. We were playing with 3 of them

What is the difference between the demo models during Jan event that people got to touch vs. the secretive room where developers have to sign an agreement not to reveal anything about the bolted iPad to test the applications on?
It will be the longest “One more thing…” only to be revealed on April 3rd.
Let’s look back: SDK components, the non-disclosed shipment details of hardware components and lastly the delay.
All I can say when you add it all up is there’s a hardware change.
There is a backstabbing and cut throat market functioning since for ever!!!
The Asian Market manufacturing knock-offs products that were developed primarily
by our American Companies. there are very few creative companies in existence, they view, develop and create, while most Asian companies seat around and mass produce knock-offs, Seem them $99.00 dollars tables? What about those crappy smart phone, many trying to look like the Iphone. There are millions of mp3 knock-offs of the Ipod. Blogs such as Gizmodo and Engadget, offering as viable altenatives, to our American consumers, only because there’re cheap. Are manufacturing materials and other important facts taken into account? “NO”
Why should our companies make available their products specs. way ahead of time and allow for these parasites to live off their efforts. Then we have some people masquerading as writer / reporter whom only concern is “I reported it first”
Are they concern about information integrity “hell no” They sound link Nike with it’s “just Do It” paraphrase. I support certain extend of secrecy, it keeps it home, and it doesn’t allow these knuckle heads to speculate, or the leeches to steal ideas.

I think they have to be paranoid. Otherwise someone would surely leak info to one of the blogs and or someone like HP, Dell, Asus, Acer, Google, etc. who could get a jump on their own iPad competitive offerings and also deflate the excitement on April 3. Only two months ago Valleywag offered $100,000 to get an iPad to play with for an hour.
