Two stories are getting some airtime today. One has NPR and the WSJ building special iPad versions of their websites without Flash (remember this was one of Steve Jobs requests last month when he visited the Journal?) The sites will be basically the same but the Flash bits will be replaced largely by HTML5 elements.
Some of you might be thinking: Why not just build websites without Flash? Why keep the Flash versions around at all?
The Motley Fool’s Eric Jhonsa responds that Flash isn’t going anywhere soon. Whether you hate Flash or you love it, there are some realities that will keep Flash developers around for years to come.
The biggest issue is Internet Explorer.
Internet Explorer still accounts for close to 60% of all Web browsing and it can’t properly render HTML5. Interestingly, Internet Explorer 9 was previewed today and it apparently is going to be able to do HTML5. But the IE crowd aren’t the “quick-to-update” types. There are at TWO serious flaws in Mr. Jhonsa’s view of the world, and the bogus pectentages represented above.
1) They totally ignore the influence of IE9 once people start upgrading from IE8. Quite an oversight!
2) Web developers don’t care whether a certain standard is officially blessed or not. The only thing they care about is whether the majority of webbrowsers support the technology or not. With support for HTML5 video in IE9 the majority of all websurfers will be able to watch HTML5 video. That’s when web developers will start switching to HTML5 video. Simple as that.
As stated in the story, 21% of all internet users and over a third of all IE users are still on IE 6 (!!)
If they didn’t upgrade to 7 or 8, then why would they upgrade to 9.
Also IE9 doesn’t work on XP. So there’s that 40% audience.
So guess what Einstein, if a site like youtube or hulu dumps flash, guess how quickly users will dump old POS versions of IE, or even switch to much better offerings in Safari, Firefox or Chrome…
Not at all. I work for a very big financial company, a worldwide one and standard is IE6 for all of our PCs and Laps, even those with Vista. Win7 is not yet in plans. Win2K is going out.
So, we build our websites taking into account what you can render in IE6, Safari and Firefox. Recently, Safari and Firefox for Mac were included as well (for the external clients, since there are no Macs in the company).
All of the advertising, tutorials, etc., teaching you like how to do eBanking and such are in Flash. We are not changing to HTML5. Haven’t even received any single course on it and we are constantly having courses on what is trendy.
What Apple is doing is a silly movement. Flash might not be the best thing around, still is around, all over and nobody is going to invest a lot in trying to change something to a technology that hasn’t even been finished.
So, you might say whatever you want, still everybody uses Flash. I hate it myself because it is so buggy, but I have a life, I do enjoy watching the web pages as they are, no matter if they have ads, I like using Facebook and being able to play the farmville, super poke! pets, etc., so… if I’m to buy something, I will look forward for a product that can actually render what I want to do now, tomorrow and a year after.
I like the analysis, good to pass this on. I disagree with Lars that it would be an oversight to calculate with unreleased software that MAY support HTML5 elements.
But I will say that it is unnecessary to give special treatment to iProducts as the 5%. Shouldn’t we talk about mobile users in general? Some have flash available, but my understanding is that mobile device users generally load non-flash web pages. Advertisers don’t just need to cater to Apple customer, but mobile customers. Sounds like WSJ and NPR have it right.
I think a lot of companies will be building versions of their sites that are touch friendly and flash free. The touch experience will be exploited and we’ll end up with at least 3 versions of the big players’ sites for touchscreen mobile, pad and large non-touch screen.
While mobile devices are great in numbers, the large majority of users still access the internet via desktop machines. If you go look the mentioned Net Applications analytics data, desktops make up 98.13% of the internet audience. That said, all major cell phone companies, with the exception of Apple are currently working with Adobe to get Flash Player 10.1 (or Flash Lite 4 for the lower-end non-smart phones) on their systems. By the end of this year likely all non-Apple smartphones will include Flash.
“Remember, not everyone has the resources to build two versions of their website” No, but most do – and certainly all the big players. CEOs will be asking “Why doesn’t our site work on my iPhone / iPad?” and just want their IT departments to sort it out without necessarily even knowing what Flash is. I think most mainstream sites will have two versions fairly soon.
you dream a lot. Of course even companies with tons of money aren’t doing that. There’s something that is called architecture, compliance, guidances, information security, secure configurations management, etc., so it is sometimes more difficult that a big company will be building two versions of the same thing just to reach 5% of the population. You can go to most e-banking websites on a Mac and you will suffer. Mostly when it is the enterprise version of their banking sites. Some “personal banking” sites serve both Windows and Mac, but not all of them. Try to use Edify EBS, CBS, etc., configure TIBCO, whatever. And if you are paying contractors to do the animations, publicity, etc., to be used in your page, they will obviously make them in Flash.
I like my iPhone, and hate the fact I cannot access Flash sites or sections of them. Still I understand that “it is a phone” but now with the iPad I find no reasonable thought for it to not have Flash. “Drains your battery life” sure… even without Flash iPhones run out of battery pretty fast. I guess Apple has been going down in quality lately. And sure I believe all the real reasons for they not supporting Flash on iPad and iPhone/iPodTouch is because that way you will have to pay Apple for accessing video and such through iTunes…

diedicated to Apple that takes the Video and converts it to HTML5 so that the Apple Computer can play the video if it isn’t in an Apple
Video Format. There would be like a 15 second delay, but it would be miles ahead of what we got now. Yes, it can be done, Just do it.
It’s so easy to use a video tag and with a flash bask. Come on people.
Flash player is free, but it’s not open sourced. SWF format is open sourced, but not the player. The player should have been open-sourced, so that Apple had a chance to tweak it to its satisfaction if THEY wanted to.
As ever, you miss the point that %of the browser market is not important – it is spending power! I only want to talk to people who are going to buy from me – not have conversations with the passers-by. People with money by iPhones and will buy iPads – and will probably buy my product if they can see it. Virgin US is about to drop Flash completely so iPhone users can use online booking from their phone – follow the money, not the geeks and the poor.
Good, I’m glad this is being done! The users not upgrading their versions of IE is definitely an issue, and it’s not going to go away soon! A lot of businesses use IE 6 (including the government I think?)

The article doesn’t take into account that many are building iphone/smartphone specific sites as it is and so not putting flash into the smartphone site is trivial in that context.
You don’t necessarily have to create two sites and redirect. I have seen some interesting HTML 5 players that start HTML 5 and degrade to a flash player. I personally have created a javascript that looks for links to flv/mp4 on my page and creates the embedds dynamically for the video. If there is no flash installed (or javascript turned on) the link just remains a link. Since we use mp4 (or are starting too) the mp4 will still link up fine for iPads and iPhones and play using their built in players. I am sure there are a lot of creative solutions to dealing with no HTML5 compliant browswers if you look at it from starting with HTML5 and degrading to something else rather than building two seperate sites.
Meh – flash is ten years ahead of html5 – why do we al have to use crap technology because evelopers are userless and cant develop in flash – keep up or get out.
We are a large retailer and mostly stay away from flash solely because of Search Engine Optimization. We do use it very occassionally for rotating images but because Flash content isn’t searchable by search engines we avoid it. Our business has grown emmensly because of this. The higher we get on Google (and other engines) the more money we make. And it’s only possible by having 99% non-Flash content.
