People signing up for AppleCare for their iPad have noted that the protection plan is for only two years, unlike its Mac products which are three years.  Apple’s iPhone and iPod plans are two years so, as warranty items, Apple sees iPads more like iPhones and less like Macs.  Apple’s iPad AppleCare page could only be found by guessing the URL so it is probably being built out.  Applecare for iPad PDF legal agreement is here.

Also, some readers have noted that Apple isn’t able to sell AppleCare in Florida for iPads.  Other states may have similar issues as Apple has issued some customers the following generic email upon purchase of Applecare for iPad.  The below is from Florida resident:

AppleCare has had an on-again off-again relationship with Florida and its product coverage laws.  Some speculate that high insurance premiums related to frequent hurricanes have something to do with the issue.  Others think it has to do with nominal fees and paperwork and laws protecting seniors.

It’s the same with buying extended car warranties in Florida. at least with Acura, many dealers sell the Acura extended warranty online or phone, but if you live in Florida, they are not honored.

  2. 9to5Mac Noob says:

Florida is a difficult state period when it comes to insurance and extended coverages for electronics because of laws passed to protect the senior community from scams.

  3. bousozoku says:

It wasn’t until some time in 2005 when they finally opened up AppleCare for consumers.  AppleCare for businesses works differently, buy any businesses offering extended warranties for consumers must put away money equal to the purchase price–or at least, at that time.

This is obviously a lot of money if you do a lot of business but I never saw another computer maker not selling extended warranties.  I ended up buying through CompUSA (before their collapse) to get their warranty until my kate 2004 PowerBook was eligible nearly 1 year later.

  4. Bill Boulware says:

It is not just Floriday someone in WI ordered Apple Care on an iPad WiFi and on a second order for an iPad 3G and it was cancelled only on the 3G – it isn’t a state issue, it is being cancelled form all 3G orders and likely has to do with that the 3G hasn’t been ‘fully’ approved by the FCC yet.

  5. 9to5Mac Bitter Noob says:

when I worked for Apple, we couldn’t sell AppleCare on any product to consumers over the phone even when they requested it. They could, however, purchase AppleCare online.

  6. Customer Advice says:

It’s great living in the UK, by law goods must last a “reasonable time”, the definition of which is dependant on the type of good and price, anything up to 6 years. If I buy a £500 gadget with no moving parts it’s not unreasonable to expect it, under normal use, to last 4 or 5 years. Interestingly, the contract is with the retailer, not the manufacturer!

    • the Cappy says:

Out of curiosity, who determines what’s reasonable with that law? The Internet is full of eye-opening examples about how different (and often UN-reasonable) people’s definitions of “reasonable” can be.

    • 9to5Mac Noob says:

In the US, some states have zero consumer protection laws, putting you at the mercy at the manufacturer or retailer. However, many US states have laws that give the consumer rights above and beyond the “one way warranty” offered by manufacturers, based on the concept of “fitness of merchantability”. In short, a reasonable person would expect, say, a cell phone being used normally to last for a couple years instead of the 1 year offered by many. That’s why US warranty statements usually say something like “your rights many vary from state to state, and some of these exclusions may not apply to you”. Who decides what’s reasonable? Hopefully, the manufacturer, the consumer, and the retailer can decide together on a case-by-case basis. But if they can’t come to agreement, a judge can look at the facts presented by both sides and decide. When I had a laptop logic board fail 4 months out of the warranty, the manufacturer just replaced it. Because it was clear to both me and the manufacturer’s agent (aka “the authorized retailer”) that it was well taken care of, and that a design or manufacturing related problem (and not abuse) caused the failure.

  7. the Cappy says:

Apple Care wasn’t available for me in Texas.

  8. AllanF says:

    Also not available in Wisconsin.

  9. gpy says:

Please, I need a fast answer.

So this means that it will NOT have the classical international warranty as we have on the mac?

If I’ll buy in US and I’ll bring it in Europe and get it broken, If I go the one Apple Store in Europe, they will fix it under warranty?

    thanks

  10. 9to5Mac Noob says:

Anything longer than 2 years is stupid.

Apple knows that people that upgrade every year don’t buy coverage, and people that don’t upgrade every year don’t give a shit if ther device breaks 3 years from now out of warranty. They’ll juat buy a new one. The whole “extended warranty” thing is for a small minority of the consumer world. But if you didn’t offer it, people would bitch and moan all the same.

    • the Cappy says:

The iPad is a new animal. Who can say? But to the extent your comments might be construed to extend further to other device categories, then you’re off your rocker. The 3 year AppleCare for laptops is a godsend.

  11. 9to5Mac Noob says:

    Not offered in KY either?

    • terry says:

I ordered a 3G including apple care for shipping to a KY address; the credit card billing address is a FL address. I got an email saying the apple care portion of my order had been cancelled.

  13. taoprophet420 says:

Isn’t the $99 gets you a new iPad if your battery isn’t charging a bigger deal then this non story? This type portable device should only get the 2 years of Apple Care it is just a bigger iPhone in the end. Apple sending a new IPad instead replacing the battery is big news. I like this blog, but realy do think you are going overboard on trivial details of the iPad.

  14. 9to5Mac Noob says:

when is the ipad going to be sold at retailers like best buy?

  15. Zedd says:

“Apple sees iPads more like iPhones and less like Macs.”

Thats because it is. Its just a big-screen iPod Touch with 3G.

    • teco221 says:

I want a  big-screen iPod touch with 3 G, so I ordered on Friday right away even it won’t ship to me until late April but I am super happy :)

    • the Cappy says:

All the evidence standing before you, and you are still saying this. Trite, short-sighted, and utterly wrong.

Some people cherish their sardonic pose so much that they can’t bear to change in the face of evidence to the contrary. Others simply don’t know any other way to get attention than to troll.

  16. 9to5Mac Noob says:

The fact that you have to buy a separate plan just to cover the thing for a few years speaks volumes. My 6 year old crackberry still works fine.

  17. Norm says:

Better buy the ipad with an Am Ex card or some other one like a Visa Signature card that doubles the manufacturers warranty.

  18. OptimalPro says:

Maybe it is a good idea to wait a bit to see what the first reviews will be for the iPad. People are very excited about the product but nobody knows what surprise Apple can have for us this time:)

  19. seo services says:

I have AppleCare for all my other Apple devices, is this specific to the iPad?

  20. cheetahbob says:

There is another option out there – SquareTrade. They’re pretty reputable and I have my iPhone covered through them. It also only lasts 2 years, but it also covers accidents, which would be the most importnat thing for an ipad in my book. it’s $96 for all models & their website is here:
