A number of reports are coming in today with extremely high iPad sales numbers and potential shortages.

First, Fortune follows the Apple Sanity Board (oxymoron?)who have been tallying order numbers from iPads purchased today.  They’ve figured that between the start of sales at 8:30am ET until 10:30am ET, 51,000 orders were taken.  While “50,000 iPads sold in two hours” makes a good headline, there were probably a few iPods and Macs sold during that time period as well.  Apple receives 15,000 orders on a normal day.

Silicon Alley Insider thinks 20,000/hour are selling, which from the above, seem pretty reasonable.

MacDailyNews reports that people who change their order for in-store pickup won’t receive their iPads on April 3.

Multiple iPad buyers have been told that in order to do such a change, the delivery order would have to be cancelled and a new in-store pickup order completed, but that iPad orders (which began this morning at 8:30am EST) have been “so overwhelming” that new iPad orders may not be available for in-store pickup on April 3.

Earlier estimates were that Apple wanted to make 700,000 iPads in March and a million in April.

Well, so much for iPad ‘Fail’ – selling close to 160,000 units in one day (a PRE sale, no less!) shows that there is a demand for this product indeed. Lets see if this trend continues…

    • 9to5Mac Noob says:

Your Projection is based on 8 Hrs, the online store is open all day and all night.  The sales will probably be more like 200,000 by day’s end, what are the Whinners going to wine about now??????

      • 9to5Mac Noob says:

That does assume that the demand stays constant. I imagine that if we had full knowledge of the purchase data the rate would increase slightly once the entire US has woken up and then start to fall off after that. I would say that there won’t be more than 150,000 sales on the first day, but that’s just my best guess.

If someone wanted to get a really good idea of the number of sales, they could purchase one at the end of the day and subtract one of the original purchase order numbers to find the different. That would tell us the total number of sales orders Apple received for the day. Subtract their usual number of sales (15,000) to get the number of iPad sales. Of course it’s possible that they may have a slight bump in total sales if someone people intending to purchase an iPad decide not to do so, but end up purchasing something else from Apple.

This also fails to take into account the demand for the product from people who don’t pre-order products. I’m a likely iPad buyer, but I’m too lazy to pre-order. I probably will end up buying one once they show up in stores, however. This is of course assuming they don’t sell out of inventory before the launch date.

        • 9to5Mac Noob says:

There are quite a few of us that are purchasing multiple tablets.  I ordered two, one for me and another for my wife.

Would be interesting to know what percentage of people are doing that.

        • AllanF says:

At 11:00 PM Pacific Time i ordered an extra dock and the order number was 122,400 greater than my first order which was pretty close to 5:30 AM Pacific Time. There were probably a thousand or so people that ordered before me this morning so lets say 125,000 orders in the first 17.5 hours.  There will be a few more orders tonight but ignoring these and saying that 15,000 of these orders were for other stuff then 110,000 orders today were iPad related.  Some of theses were for parts and some were for 2 iPads (maximum number of iPads per buyer.)  Talking all that into account and adding in the orders that were reportedly taken before March 12 from “business customers” the 150,000 sales as of Day 1 looks like a pretty good guess.

          • AllanF says:

P.S.  If the average order size were $666.67, 150,000 iPads would be $100 Million in sales volume.

      Agree.

I never really understood those that thought the iPad would “fail” as even though many had complaints about the iPad’s abilities no one could argue the device is not beautifully designed and will evolve (just as the iphone) through software enhancements.

      • 9to5Mac Noob says:

As much as I hate the iPad, I had no doubt in my mind that it would be a success. Some people will buy anything from Apple, go figure.

          Clueless!

        • 9to5Mac Noob says:

why would you hate a device you dont even own?
          you people are so strange.

i mean , hate? really? i’ll reserve my hatred for concepts not products.

          • 9to5Mac Noob says:

Oh, but I _do_ own one! I like to call it the iPad Mini.

What worries me is that so many people will blindly preorder one without trying it out first, seeing how it feels in their hands, checking out the keyboard, etc.

    It will be so HUGE!!!!!

Unless apple gets off their high horse and starts supporting flash, so I can watch my tv shows on it, there’s no way I’m getting one of these. I don’t understand why they don’t leave some things (such as my desire to use flash) up to the customer, instead of their better judgement.

    • 9to5Mac Noob says:

well, YOU sir, are obviously wrong

    • 9to5Mac Noob says:

Because the average user doesn’t know what flash is. If they buy a iPad and the battery drains in 2 hours from heavy flash use they are going to have a bad impression of the iPad. Even though the poor battery life is due to flash which is not a apple product the customer will associate the issue with Apple. Its a move to protect Apple’s image.

    • 9to5Mac Noob says:

Flash blows and always has. Many developers agree. Don’t worry, you’ll be able to watch your TV on the iPad once Flash goes byby.

    • iphonerulez says:

Major sites will eventually have alternatives to Flash for mobile users. How long that will take I would guess by how many iPads and iPhones or any device that doesn’t support Flash are sold. Advertisers will want to reach those Apple mobile users and will make whatever adjustments to a site they need to attract those consumers that do not have Flash support. Apple users will not be able to use those fancy Flash sites that have Flash games and e-cards. Too bad. Some compromises have to be made if battery life is to be preserved for mobile users. Anyone that absolutely must have Flash support can just use another mobile platform. I don’t think that many iPhone or Touch users will be jumping to another platform but that’s just my opinion. They won’t give up a lot to get back a little.

Say it twice and its more likely to come true.

  5. I would love to get some more information on the availability of in-store pickup. That’s how I ordered my iPad, so of course don’t want to hear bad news. Do you think that the lack of availability would only be for people placing orders now or trying to change their order? Or might it affect people who got up early to place their order too? I’m nervous!!

    • 9to5Mac Noob says:

It only affects people who ordered online for home delivery and then changed it to in-store pickup. If you started off as an in-store pickup, you’re all set.

    • JXibalba says:

As the above poster mentioned, if you placed the order for in-store pickup originally, you are fine as along as you do not change that order to delivery.

Honestly, though as much fun as it might be to be in line with other soon-to-be iPad owners, I still believe that there will be chaos in Apple stores nationwide with a long line for pick-up orders. (Of course there is no activation like the iPhone so maybe it won’t be as bad as the AT&T iPhone store experience).

Call me lazy, but I will be sitting at home just hanging out enjoying life waiting on the FedEx delivery man come April 3.

  6. Thanks for the information!

  7. Debbie says:

I had to ad a second credit card number, so I didn’t get my order finalized
until 8:35 this morning. I ordered the 3G model so I’m in long-term waiting mode.
I also ordered a case and a keyboard. Did others order accessories?

  8. the Cappy says:

I ordered Apple Care with my iPad and later got an email from Apple stating “Apple is not authorized to sell the AppleCare Protection Plan for iPad in your state at this time and we have removed the item from your recent order. Any other items on the order will be processed as usual.”

I’m in Texas. Was anybody else able to order Apple Care, who DIDN’T get this message?

Can’t wait until flash is history.  Never could figure out why it stuck around so long.  Thanks to Apple for helping to get rid of it! It’s a public service.

  14. HP Slate says:

With respect to smart phones – naturally the iPhone is without a match. However once the internet-challenged iPad gets released, the HP Slate will vanquish the Flash-free iPad. People wish to access the entire web, and not just what Apple construes is appropriate.

    • jourdan says:

the HP Slate? really? wow. everything HP makes is total garbage.

    • 9to5Mac Noob says:

As much as I would love for this to happen, it won’t. Some people will buy a device just because it has an Apple logo on the back, and they assume everything else is garbage… like the poster above me. And in this way, the iPad will be very successful, like it or not.

  15. 9to5Mac Noob says:

i-pad lossers why are you buying somthing that cant even browse half of the internet thanks to no flash I like to hoke up my laptop to my plasma tv and watch movies and you cant even do that with your i-crap and i only spend  $400 for my laptop how much did your maxipad cost $500? $1000? well i have to go back to facebook to play farmville to bad you guys cant even do that with ypur  maxipad jajajaja.talking about who is ahead in technology

    • 9to5Mac Noob says:

Has anyone else noticed this bizarrely consistent behaviour?

Apple/Mac/iPad haters seem consistently to have a very tenuous grasp of the written language. I’m actually hoping that the explanation is that English isn’t the poster’s first language.

I have two theories for this: either this is a general behaviour, and there is some sort of link between poor communication skills and not liking Apple products (Too much time spent playing Farmville during English lessons? Not understanding the difference between quantity and quality? Mistakenly equating functionality with usability?); or the “missing link” is alive and well and is an extremely prolific commenter on internet message boards (If so you’ve got to applaud him/her for managing to type at all, with knuckles damaged from a lifetime of dragging along the floor). What do you think?

      • 9to5Mac Noob says:

Actually what I’ve noticed is the snobby arrogance of fanboys like you. Not everyone who writes a quick post on the internet really cares about perfect grammar and punctuation, which you clearly care so much about. I’ll bet you sniff your own farts too and think they smell better than the farts of PC users. That may be true, but at least the PC users’ farts cost about 800 bucks, not 2000, for a perfectly good laptop with later generation technology (since PC’s can use components the moment they are released…don’t have to wait 3 years for the next Macbook version).

      • 9to5Mac Noob says:

By the way, your semicolon is used improperly you wannabe grammar god.

      • 9to5Mac Noob says:

Your semicolon is misused you phony wannabe grammar god. How ironic you use that in a post railing others for their bad e-grammar.

  16. 9to5Mac Noob says:

I dont care how much education you claim to have If your spending $500 to $1000 on a stupid iPad that is very limited I Dont think you are very smart, I can buy a netbook with more functions for less money and since steve jobs said that note books arent good at any thing then what the Ipad is good for any way.

    • 9to5Mac Noob says:

      I’ll do a comparison:

16:9 video, without black bars: netbook yes, iPad no

      Flash: netbook yes, iPad no

Real keyboard: netbook yes, iPad no

      Multitasking: netbook yes, iPad no

Battery life: netbook as much as 14 hours, iPad as much as 10 hours

Easily broken glass screen: netbook no, iPad yes

      Price: netbook $300 for 160GB, iPad $500 for 16GB

      …I’ll take the netbook.

  17. 9to5Mac Noob says:

Great, buy an iPad and take some online classes to learn basic punctuation and capitalization skills.

    • 9to5Mac Noob says:

I will probably do that when the Maxipad comes with a keyboard for typing and  flash to open the lesson programs

  18. MacCoy says:

For anyone NOT predicting a shortage of iPads, check out iPads for sale on eBay. Clearly, there is an entire (albiet temporary) cottage industry of buying iPads on opening day and instantly reselling (at much higher prices) them overseas where the product is not currently available.

One has to wonder if this type of demand was built into the estimates of initial sales. If not, it’s reasonable to assume that the product will sell our early and remain under supply/demand pressure for some time to come.

    SO…. if ya want one…..

when is the ipad going to be sold at retailers like best buy?

  21. 9to5Mac Noob says:

when will the ipad be avaible from retail stores specifically best buy?

  22. 9to5Mac Noob says:

150,000 paperweights to be collecting dust in a year when Apple makes a better, cheaper version. Remember when a few months after iPhone release they dropped the price 600 bucks and all the pre-order gotta-have-it-first fanboys started crying? Can’t wait to see that happen again.

All this proves is that Apple really has commanded a flock of sheep. The fact that 150,000 are eager enough to preorder the moment it is realeased has no telling on actual demand. I’ll give my right nut if they sell a million by the end of March.

By the way, the preorder were a non monetary transaction…the iPads aren’t actually paid for yet. The people still get a chance to check them out and learn they are just an oversized iPod touch.

  23. belle says:

Amazing, Cool! I believe ipad will win, there are so many apple fans, so the ipad catched the public eyes.
I’m a apple fan too, wopoos, share some more information about apple ipad, iphone and ipod: http://www.ifunia.com/resources.html

and there are many free stuffz, you’ll be surprised.

  24. MacLoveNot says:

Jeez, what a bunch of sheeple.
Hurry up and send your money to apple!

Wow, a product that lets you surf
    the web. Course no keyboard.

I wonder if anyone else will ever
be able to make a machine that
    can surf the web???
nah, apple is the only one with that
    kind of expertise.

  25. steven frijoles says:

american consumers are morons, why is anybody surprised? everyone sprung at the first iphone and then no one could hear anything over the uproar of the unsatisfied. apple is notorious for releasing initial products ridden with little problems. when people realize they cant play music and surf the web at the same time, put in your ear plugs.
