More iPad fail.
Removing the stocks, weather and clock apps are a fail? Or not having a feature that it was never advertised to have is a fail? I’m confused by what you mean by MORE fail.
There is no reason for those apps not to be in there. The iPhone and iPod touch do this.
I believe he’s pointing out that this is just more stuff than the iPad can’t do. The iPad wasn’t much to begin with, and this certainly doesn’t help.
There is no reason for Apple to put their Stock app there when other companies like Bloomberg are putting out much better stock apps.
I always feel like Apple should strip down their default installed apps.
And looks like they finally did it. I am sure you’ll find those apps downloadable from app store.
They’re not there because there are a hundred apps that do these things already and better. So what’s the point? They are not absolute core functionality. They once were (reason why they are on iPhone and Touch) but not anymore. There would have had to have been some major redesign for the iPad’s screen if they were, as well.
It’s one thing to have legitimate complaints about the iPad… but to say that it’s a FAIL (or even to say this is a bad thing) by not including these apps when there are likely more than a handful replacements (assuming this is even true) seems like you’re just complaining for the sake of complaining.
If Apple stopped including accessories in iPods/iPhones would you praising Apple because there are loads of third-party accessories for iPhones?
If the apps they’re supposedly removing from the iPad are available as a free download, does it matter? If they remove them AND charge to get them back then we have an issue.
If my accessories you mean the USB cable and I had to go buy one instead, I wouldn’t praise them. If they stopped including them because they assumed we all had enough already but offered them as a free opt-in I’m not sure I would care, certainly wouldn’t be complaining about it.
This is all just speculation anyways, but if they take them off because they found most people* don’t use them and then let you download them if you wanted them then I’m not sure why it matters.
* I say most people just in case a counter argument is “Well then why not have it come with 0 apps and let you download everything” because I would think those apps mentioned might be among the least used overall.
Maybe I’m a weird one but I use those apps (not the voice memos) the most. If Apple put them on the app store for free, then I would have no problem, but I doubt they will, all the best replacements cost money or have ads.
more forum troll fail.

More iPad fail?? What drugs are you on? I’m sick and tired of all of these people complaining about the things that should have been part of the iPad from get go like iPad doesn’t have a camera, doesn’t have front facing camera etc… Would you really use this device to take photos? How often do people use video conferencing? I have a Macbook with built in isight and never once have I used it for video chat. Who wants to have a look at the ugly mug of the person on the other side? How often have you seen people with these nokia front facing cameras make a video call?
Another complaint: people wanted it to have a full version of Mac OS X. Why???? Don’t people forget that the reason tablet computers have been a failure is that they were basically touch versions of Windows OS? iPhone OS is the perfect operating system for the type of functionality people will use the iPad. It’s hot meant to be a replacement computer. Remember when jobs said that the PC will be the hub for all these peripherals, ipods, iphone, ipad etc. This makes sense.
Seems like all good to dump most of the default apps. Not everyone needs or wants a stock ticker app. Most people will want Mail and Safari and Contacts, but even that isn’t necessarily true.
Now there is a large collection of apps out there in the store.
Seems like the right move to me. Just make sure the formerly stock Apple apps remain available from the App store for free; then let the market (aka customers) decide what they want.
Why this is a “Fail” is beyond me. Likely a comment from a teen tired from a long day of goofing off at school.
This makes no sense, why would apple remove the clock app? It’s the only way to really have an always-on alarm clock…
Something tells me Gruber doesn’t have all his facts straight
I agree the Clock app an app the runs in the background. No app from the app store can be approved to accomplish the same functionality. So the omittance of the clock app is crazy, but the widet mode makes tons of sense for the calc app. How often are you reading an email, or on a website and also use the widget calculator on your mac or calc on you pc? I use it all the time, it makes sense for a tablet computer to be able to do the same.
I use the stocks app all the time. But I guess it won’t be hard to find a replacement….
I can see why they took out the Stock and Weather widgets… You could easily go online to look that info up.
But the missing Clock, Calculator, and Voice recorder does puzzle me…
I hope it’s just that Apple wasn’t finished with them at the event.
I dunno. I could see it happening. Whether or not it’s a good decision could be up for debate. But if it happens, I really don’t think most people will think twice about it after it goes official. The stocks app is okay but as has been said, not everyone needs/wants it. And as for Weather, I think 75% or more of people I know who actually check the weather on their device have some other better app they’ve downloaded (Weather Bug, the Weather Channel, etc.).
The term “fail” is so old and lame now.
Perhaps these will be optional, downloadable Apps as opposed to those one cannot delete.
I hope this happens in iPhone OS 4.0. I don’t want stocks, notes, weather or voice memos taking up space on my home screen. I rarely even use YouTube.
There are far better alternatives for most of those apps on the app store if I did want them anyway.
This is whats going to happen. the DEVS are going to make better APPS for Stocks. weather and whatever is missing…. Then APPLE will come in at a later time and Stick it to them right up the arse…. That’s what they did to all the DEVS who made the voice record memo APPS…. and trust me APPLE will do it again….. and on another note I don’t care what kind of a marketing genius Steve Jobs is… but he is an A$$……. and soon enough all this will backfire on APPLE….. Good Day !
There is absolutely no work involved in making a voice recording app. Apple have the source code for a sample voice recorder app on their developer site already done for you. The people that developed apps with the only function being recording audio are just lazy.
Proper notes apps that allow you to categorize, make to-do’s etc probably haven’t been affected by Apple’s voice recording app at all.
Why would that happen? i don’t understand why your scenario is a reasonable possibility. Couple that with the fact that your writing style makes you sound like a stupid kid,I conclude that you’re an idiot. Or a stupid kid. Or both.
I agree … I had to read his comment 4 times to understand just half of what he was trying to say….
Sadly, devs can’t make a replacement Clock app due to the lack of background processes. Yes, there are some great alarm clock apps, but they all have issues since they can not be run in the background. Weather and Stocks – yeah, tons of 3rd party apps that are great and could easily replace the default ones, but why not include them to begin with?
I think the better solution would be to be able to optionally remove these “widget” apps via iTunes. So if you don’t care about the stock market or weather or you have a better default weather/stock app, you can remove the Apple widget app and save yourself a space or two on your iPad.
I can see why the calculator is gone – it is a *great* app on the Touch and iPhone, but I think the buttons would actually be *too* big on the iPad. I mean, yeah, a POS app for the iPad would rock, but that would be more than just a calculator function. Maybe they hadn’t redesigned the Calculator app for the iPad yet [eg: with a paper tape feature or graph features]. I just hope these missing apps are able to be downloaded/purchased from Apple via the iTunes App Store. I know I’d miss the clock app just for the alarm feature!

Untrue. A clock app is cake. there are OS callbacks that you can use to set an alert based on time. Duh. In fact, the clock app uses these APIs, and other developers can too. The clock app is nothing special – just a simple UI and callbacks. Read the documentation some time.
Maybe it’s to make room for the new to-do/task list that will be included in the iPad.
I’m pretty sure we will see WIDGETS soon….. and of course APPLE will charge us for the update…. just not sure if they will charge the wifi only iPAd or 3G as well…… One thing I really want Apple to do is make something similar or identical to SB SETTINGS for the jailbroken phones…… we need shortcuts…. Just turning on bluetooth is like a 5 step process……. With SB settings you just swipe your finger push and thats it….. When will APPLE make it happen ?
I would love to see the STOCK APP on the iPAd its would be great to check the stocks and view full size charts…. Even the weather APPS now we have the real state to see more detailed weather forecasts….. But I guess its on Yahoos end ? maybe ?
I’m a bid apple fan. So, could someone tell me, other than the screen size…any advantages to having an ipad over the touch or iphone.
I’m still in shock that this thing is just a big ipod touch. So now in the commercials you get to see some legs and feet and not just a hand.
Nice
If you think the iPad is a big iPod Touch then it is not for you. Get an iPod and save your money.
I have an iphone. But Hey, Thanks for the Tip.
I think you know as well as anyone that they can and will do better than this.
I’d be really upset if Apple don’t make a dashboard eventually … the mockup looks so nice …
maybe 2 programable button because my macbook late 07 that doesnt have black lit keyboard has the same buttons empty.
I bet they pop up in the app store, this way its easy for apple to update them rather than update the whole oS
widget mode is a way to get closer to multi-tasking apps. by holding the home button, e.g. it can bring up a dashboard that you can use in every app. developers could create those widgets, so users can doing some chat while playing a game. or do some calculate while an app is open.
I don’t find it a big deal not to have those apps. The iPad will have a ton of apps to add in no time. Who can complain about an improved stocks app or calendar?
Everyone has to realize that the first generation of iPad will have it’s flaws but as long as the platform is in place and the interface is as smooth as the iPhone and Touch, it will be a success.
