Those little Mac window icons we found inside of Valve’s Steam gaming platform might not just be skins as some of you thought.  Today, Valve released a slew of teaser ads to various websites around the web (KotakuMacRumorsMacNNShack NewsMacworld, Gizmodo).  Six in all, the ads (pasted below) tease the release of the following Mac games: Half-Life, Portal, Team Fortress 2 and Left 4 Dead. Love the images – nice one Valve. Their games are the only reason I boot XP these days, would love to see that end.

  2. 9to5Mac Noob says:

    worlds least subtle hint, guys

  3. battiato1981 says:

Wow, very nice job on these by whoever …

  4. Some truly brilliant and subtle advertising on Valve’s part and certainly can’t wait till the games are out on a Mac.

    • 9to5Mac Noob says:

Definitely. This is very well done and got people talking. The pictures are really brilliant. Valve is one of the most beloved developers on the planet that has some of the most popular games ever, this will be huge for gaming on Macs.

All I can say is that I can’t wait to finally get Counterstrike on my Mac.

  5. 9to5Mac n00b says:

wow, they had a pretty awesome marketing plan to get the word out. see the rest over at macrumors.

haha the subtlety doesn’t matter… it’s pretty obvious it wasn’t supposed to be a secret.

  6. 9to5Mac Noob says:

    meh. games are for losers.

  7. 9to5Mac Noob says:

    This is awesome!!

Will you be able to use your Windows account and get discounts on the games you already bought for Windows, or wether the Mac gets its own, completely separated platform? What about netplay and chat between the OSes? Will it be a good, native, stable Mac application that doesn’t require some sort of ‘installation’ proces? Argh, now the wait for more information begins…

Im really hoping they are offering cross platform gaming, both in the multiplayer but also in the titles purchased. I bought the Orange Box through steam for my gaming pc, but I would love to be able to run that on my macbook without having to rebuy the game. Since steam lets you install/runn the games on any pc, hopefully they just consider this to be another platform to run the same game, not have the mac version be considered a different game entirely.

    • 9to5Mac Noob says:

you obviously don’t understand how software systems work… *sigh*

  8. 9to5Mac Noob says:

Wow This is a huge step forward… First Dragon Age and now this.
Now all they need is a decent media center replacement (with DVR) and my house will be PC less!

Mac Mini + Elgato EyeTV Hybrid (or EyeTV 250)

Bonus points for the next gen mini having the rumored HDMI port.

  9. 9to5Mac Noob says:

    This is just awesome

  10. Batman says:

Is there any chance that they will be for both Intel and PPC?

  11. To Peace says:

Looks promising that the iTunes of games is coming to mac. Perhaps they’ll call the OS X version iSteam. Along with another poster, Steam is one of the few reasons I keep WinXP installed. I would love it if the PC licenses I have would transfer over, but I suspect they won’t, as some money will be required for developing the ports.

    Cool. Really cool.

    How about Apple buying Valve?

It seems like the question that comes up a lot is what non-casual games are on the Mac. Beyond the ports of AAA games that came to the Mac much later than their Windows counterparts, there have been some companies who do support Mac and PC right out of the box natively, Blizzard being one of the more notable.

Utilizing the power of the Unity game engine, you can quite easily port a game to both platforms without much “tweaking” at all. With Unity gaining popularity (http://unity3d.com/gallery/game-list/) you’re likely to see more cross platform titles being developed. For example, we are and indie developer, but we are making what we consider to be a AAA quality game that will be for Mac and PC right out of the box.
