Perhaps this is a bit obvious, but today Appleinsider goes forth and says that future Macs, specifically the Mac Mini (which they declared as dead two years ago) will this year have HDMI ports.
They further mention that these unreleased Minis have Nvidia’s next generation MCP89 chipsets (vs. current MCP79-GeForce 9400M) which aren’t licensed to use Intel’s Core i3, i5, i7 lineup of processors. That would mean that the Minis are going to stay in the Core 2 Duo range of processors or that this design is going to get scrapped for an Intel chipset design.
Current DisplayPort Macs can get HDMI-out with various inexpensive adapters both with sound and without.
The move would also give the Macs-with-BluRay idea some more hope.
If this were true, I think the company would have missed the boat.
2 years ago would have garnered a lot of sales. Today I think most people what would have loved this solution have since purchased and established their HTPC setup.
But I doubt Apple would add HDMI to any of their lineup. It’s just not how they work, for better or for worse.
If it’s true, if they want us to use the mini as a living room setup, they’ll add the HDMI, this could make me buy one actually. And as the majority of the non geeks I don’t think it’s too late for the HDMI…
That would be nice. One assumes that it will play nicely with other Macs in the house and act as a media server of its own. Then if they only give it a Blu-ray player this could replace my PS3 in the living room. I don’t care about Blu-ray on the Macbook but on the Mini would be perfect.
What I would like, is to be able to run this as a media server connected up to my home entertainment system and store my CDs in Apple lossless, but have it sync to my Macbook in AAC256+. Let me use my iTunes on the Macbook as a client (or device) from a Mac Mini media server. I’m running out of storage space on my 500GB laptop hard drive to keep everything on there. Still hoping that Apple will do this one day…
I have just bought two mac minis and I can’t get sound on my TV no input for
sound on my HDMI ports
They make usb dongles that attach to both the video out and a usb port. You then have to enable audio out over usb, which should then allow you to output sound and video and convert it for an hdmi cable. Its not the greatest solution(only carries 2 channels of audio)but its the best available. This really is a much needed update, hope it comes included with the nvidia optima tech Nvidia has been pushing, making it both low power consuming but having a decent gpu option.

Shopped. I can tell by the pixels and seeing quite a few shops in my time. Lol who cares, but apple should consider this.
100% BS. they are not going to give up mini dvi that easily. also, they would have to change inputs for all their macs and displays.
You say that as if they don’t routinely do things exactly like that.
Fools -hdmi is nice to have. But why don’t they just ude the right chips instead and make me a HDMI adapter piece!
I actually hare Apple for this. Displayport is actually capable of sound output. Apple is just making a compromise on our behalf.
And it sucks.
Give me two DisplayPorts with audio.
DisplayPort is simply more flexible than HDMI.
If I want HDMI, I can buy a sub-$10 displayPort to HDMI adapter. If I want VGA, I can buy a $10 displayPort to VGA adapter. If I want DVI, I can buy a $10 displayPort to DVI adapter. Or a component adapter. Or composite. Or any combination there-of.
The HDMI port standard simply limits my flexibility. DisplayPort does not.
I do agree that HDMI provided better quality, but when you get nearly the same output with DisplayPort why wouldn’t you opt for it. Moreover, DisplayPort has been designed to transmit both HDMI and DVI signals and this would make it much more sort after than the HDMI adapters. I would be better off with the DisplayPort instead of going with HDMI.
