So Mike from Macsoda wrote us saying he got a response from Steve Jobs to his email wondering about the future of Final Cut Pro (40 Final Cut Pro developers were recently let go).  Typically brief, Steve Jobs said:

No worries. FCP is alive and well.

But we weren’t just going to take his word that the email was from Jobs.  We asked for the header information from the email as well  –  which was sent to us.

The email looks legit as it originates from an internal Apple 17.x.x.x IP address.  But then we noticed something kind of funny.  Steve Jobs’ iPhone is listed as iPhone Mail (7D11) which means he’s on 3.1.2.  That’s not even the current version of the iPhone OS (3.1.3 – 7E18), let alone the 4.0Beta we’re were hoping to see.

Anyway, if you are out there Mr. Jobs…you can keep your iPhone current by connecting it to iTunes and then running an update.

Steve Jobs jailbreaks his iPhone, and he didn’t want to upgrade to 3.1.3 and screw with his jailbreak. LOL.

    • sfas says:

Is it so hard to believe that Jobs doesn’t want his iPhone experience limited by not jailbreaking?

    • pmz says:

Definitely. You know all the top guys at Apple jailbreak their phones so they can actually stand using them. It’s gotta be frustrating when you test a next gen phone all day then have to take home your current gen iPhone.

I’m sure they all JB their phones for things like quick reply sms and backgrounding. :-)

    • SHEFFmachine says:

Yup I was gonna say that as soon as i read the title. Steve uses a jailbroken iPhone to get the full capabilities.

  3. mattydee says:

could it be that he is running 4.0, but they have masked it as an old version accidentally?

  4. integ says:

You guys seem to think that Steve can only have and use one iPhone… :)

He responds from his “normal” phone, but tests 4.0 from his über secret iPhone 4th Gen phone.

  5. 9to5Mac Noob says:

Who said he could only have one iPhone.

He should have other iPhones running at 4.0 alpha/beta

  6. 9to5Mac Noob says:

Why would you people assume he has only one iPhone.

He must have 4.0 and maybe 5.0 as well.

  7. chris says:

Jobs has a fully working 4.0 and may be a 3.1.4 with features we been asking for years

  8. ikir says:

Probably Steve Jobs have like 5 iPhone to work with. This is seems the work ones, no rush to update!

  9. 9to5Mac Noob says:

maybe he uses a jailbroken iphone

  10. 9to5Mac Noob says:

Maybe he was just using someone else’s phone to show them how to set up and send emails… Maybe he has the older version of the software so that he can compare stuff and see what works on what version of software so that we can all get a better user experience. Maybe like many of us, he doesn’t need the update to his phone because the battery is reporting how much juice is there correctly…

Or maybe just maybe, he’s using a 4.0 device and hasn’t upgraded it because it’s still a beta….

  11. It’s an iPad, silly.

  12. Jorge Machado says:

or maybe you are speculating to much. lol he probaly has a lot of phones . And stil don’t trust email anyway …

  13. Ginkgo says:

If your platform (whatever it is) is business critical, you never simply update because it is new. That is just plain dangerous…

Besides, I’m running the same version, not for business reasons, just that I haven’t plugged it into iTunes for ages.

    • 9to5Mac Noob says:

That’s just plain dumb… this is Apple  using apple software.. ofc they use latest and greatest!

  14. Macboy says:

    I wonder if he’s still on 10.5

  15. 9to5Mac Noob says:

maybe he’s running two phones, one with a new os that is not yet released and one he emails people that he knows will read the header info? Plus I’m sure he loves that his email address has been published (again).

  16. the_0ne says:

Smart man, I was bitten by the iPhone coma bug because I used to upgrade immediately also. Now I wait a version or two.

  17. blocker says:

+1 for Steve Jobs running a jailbroken iPhone. It’s the only reason I can think of that would explain him still running an old OS version. It’s a nice thought at least.

  18. 9to5Mac Noob says:

I couldn’t care less what phone Jobs uses, only what Apple releases.

  19. R says:

Steve Jobe would have many phones with 4.0 to play with, but you don’t put that on the phone you actually use. It’s pre-release, and you don’t want to tell investors that you lost the magazine accounts because you were running the new phone OS.

  20. 9to5Mac Noob says:

Obviously Steve Jobs is not going to respond using an iPhone that has newer software (and hardware) than what is currently released that would spill info onto the web about Apple’s future devices. He’s smarter than that.

  21. apples says:

He must have got this error

The iphone “Steve jobs” could not be updated An
    unknown error occurred (0-545344)

  22. 9to5Mac Noob says:

    but who was phone?

  23. Cespur says:

I bet he still runs Tiger as well. Hell, it might even be Puma or Cheetah.

  24. 9to5Mac Noob says:

Anybody notice apple using apple using sun messaging servers….wow that sends a great message to enterprise: “Hey everyone use OS X server its great, we use Sun products because our own can’t handle our email load….” You would think they would use their own technology, after all Snow Leopard Server is an excellent product and if done right is certainly scalable enough to handle Apple’s email load. I wonder what they use internally for directory/file/other services….good to see they’re not using M$ garbage…at least on their public servers. My one complaint is while we have iChat/CalDAV/LDAP/Mal/Wiki/Mobile Access servers apple really needs to beef up its collaboration tools. I wonder what they use internally to organize projects……

  25. 9to5Mac Noob says:

    Steve Jobs is jailbreaking!

    Steve Jobs is jailbreaking!

  27. Seth:9to5Mac says:

I can confirm as well as I recently got an email. I complained about how much profit apple was getting from the costs of the iPad. Steves reply very short was “Dont beleive everything you read the iSupply guys have no clue what our costs are.”

  28. 9to5Mac Noob says:

if you’re going to redact your address, be sure to get them all!

  29. gpy says:

no, he’s using a blackberry with a modded firmware, running a customized version of iMail… :-) )))) just to prove that he can put iPhone OS just about everywhere…

  30. Charlie says:

    LOSERS

    ALL OF YOU

  31. 9to5Mac Noob says:

Why the HELL would Jobs run 4.0 (or any other funky OS) on his iPhone?

Why would anyone right now? To enjoy all the bugs and crashes and problems? That is all it would be.

Guys, 9to5mac, really. Big deal, he hasn’t upgraded… but honestly who would think he would be using a BETA of a BETA?

    • 9to5Mac Noob says:

      Furthermore,

If any of you had ANY idea how a tech company was run, you would know that LABS are TESTING – not the CEO.

Only a small select group of people would be testing the OS.

The would not have the CEO having it flashed around in public.

  32. 9to5Mac Noob says:

Why do you think Steve Jobs even needs to jailbreak his phone. He gets a special version of 3.1.2 with unlimited access to everything.

  33. 9to5Mac Noob says:

Dude, the “to”-mail is hidden, but it’s still visible in the middle of the header. Might want to remove kontaxis :D

  34. 9to5Mac Noob says:

If his primary phone is running 3.1.2, it’s probably because he waits for a release to go live, the general public to test it, find out if it’s crap (like 3.1) and then after a few weeks, if AppleCare hasn’t gotten too many phone calls about it, updates. Given the broad issues with several of their last iPhone releases (2.0, 3.0, 3.1, 3.1.3), it’s unsurprising that a man with mission-critical operations be running the most stable version of their OS possible.

  35. mime454 says:

Think he still has a 1.0/aluminum iPhone? I loved those.

  36. mime454 says:

Think he still has a 1.0/aluminum iPhone? I loved those.

  37. 9to5Mac Noob says:

    i write steve an sms.

  38. 9to5Mac Noob says:

Most guys I know who lead tech companies, and i know half a dozen who lead small companies locally, do not have the cutting edge, because they are focused on business not tech and also crave stability above all. The ones who used iphones that I know are still on 2G- it works and is stable, so why hassle with change, they do not have time.

  39. 9to5Mac Noob says:

His phone is probably 4.0…but they masked it as 3.1.2 to prevent the public from finding out. Obviously. And the programmers aren’t going to just update the version number every time they publish a new version. I doubt his phone is jailbroken. KNowing Jobs’ sense of command, the ipHone would’ve been made to his standard of perfection before it was released; hence, the lack of a need to jailbreak.

  40. JDS says:

What makes you guys think that Steve actually responded to the email in the first place? It could be his sidekick?

    JS

  41. Aman says:

    steve jobs is smart

  42. Uf says:

    Quina olla de grills!

  43. 9to5Mac Noob says:

uki think that when the ipad comes out 4.0 will to cuz i think that the ipad runes on 4.0

  44. 9to5Mac Noob says:

Perhaps, Like most of the other business people i know and work with, he doesn’t want to be in the middle of something important on his iphone and have his email app to crash. and also, like so many of us, he doesn’t always have the time to update it.

  45. kimlo says:

I reckon his iPhone is jailbroken for sure but unthemed so no one notices.

  46. 9to5Mac Noob LOLer apple says:

Maybe because he has the beta version and then still working on mail betas.
He is very smart too, even Bill Gates like his idea.
