Apple filed for the ‘magic trackpad’ trademark on February 26, 2010 with the US Patent & Trademark Office according to Patently Apple. ‘Magic Trackpad’ likely refers to an external peripheral device for desktop computers or laptops plugged into external displays.
With more and more of OSX relying on Multi-touch gestures, Apple will likely provide desktop users a way to take advantage of such a system. Will it be just a trackpad lifted from a MacBook and connected via USB or Bluetooth or will there be more to it than that? Perhaps Apple is referring to a keyboard/trackpad combo?
I would like a keyboard track pad combo for the desktop.
What would be nice would be a touch display to the right of a real keyboard, but have the touch display act as the touch pad, but also virtual numeric pad or other configurable layout though I doubt this would every happen.
Maybe the iPad as a bluetooth trackpad/writing pad for a Mac?

A combo trackpad/keyboard … I like that. Same experience if you are using a laptop or a desktop. There are some times you’d still want a mouse, but I do like using the trackpad.

A suggestion I made to Apple last year was for the MacBook Pro to have a larger glass trackpad with expanded functionality. One that could be configured by the end user to either replace a mouse with more features or be used by artists with a stylist or even just with their fingers. Expanded functionality would allow easier use of applications such as Autodesk Sketchbook Pro, Mudbox, ZBrush, etc, without the need to necessarily carry around a tablet.
