Some interesting information has come to light this evening that may indicate a future direction of Apple’s iPhone OS products.  Below is some pretty definitive evidence that future iPhones and iPads will have video chatting capability.

These icons were found in the 3.2 SDK which seem to indicate that there will be video calling on a future iPxxx device.

But Wait!  That’s not all.  If you click below, hidden in some of the underlying iPad telephony apps are some VideoChat strings that are equally, if not more, telling evidence of future VideoChatting capabilities.

Video chat likely means front facing camera on these devices as well.  We’ll know more soon.  Also, we’ve found some references to “iChat”.

While it is possible that Apple brought code over from its Mac telephony products, it is unlikely that they also built icons and compressed them into the iPad SDK for such a product if it weren’t being built for future release.

Thanks again @sonny788 for your help!

Just why do you use the term “damning evidence?” It makes it sound like Apple has done something very ill-advised or just plain wrong, and you caught them in the act. Such hyperbole is is pretty off the mark.

    • 9to5Mac Noob says:

Apple’s unholy alliance with ATT is the damning evidence. Had ATT improved and updated its existing networks years ago iPad would be a much more useful, versatile, and powerful device. iPad is crippled owing to ATT-Apple alliance.

      • 9to5Mac Noob says:

I hate to break it to you, but iPad’s crippled feature set is the fault of Apple and Apple alone… They should have deviated from the pay per gigabyte price structure on the iPad and they should have included quite a bit more connectivity and thus functionality… and I don’t mean a camera. There should have been a multicard slot for digital camera memory or for use as expansion in the device…
Apple should have included support for Verizon, Sprint AND AT&T’s wireless networks and given the consumer the CHOICE we demand but are yet to receive.

MANY things should have been done differently in the iPad but AT&T isn’t responsible for the hardware feature set… so what are you on about…

I EFFING DESPISE AT&T… but put the blame where it belongs.

        • 9to5Mac Noob says:

So what’s stopping Apple from working with telecommunications firms other than ATT? It seems that Apple’s alliance with ATT is determined by it’s contractual relationship and ATT is dictating to Apple rather than Apple setting goals and priorities. I’m not excusing Apple’s failures. Both parties are culpable, I just think that the majority of the liability rests on ATT’s shoulders.

If the next iPhone has a front-facing camera and supports video-chat, I think it will be a great shame if the iPad didn’t have one aswell.

If the iPhone didn’t, it wouldn’t be missed on the iPad.

It would be a great marketing tool for all devices to have an iSight though. Ringing the iPad, MacBooks and iMacs from your iPhone gives a quite large base for video-chat already, and probably push sales on all of this hardware.

Brilliant story for a Sunday morninng or any morning for that matter. This has been top of my wish list for ages and this looks pretty conclusive. Also 9to5, FIRST again;-)

I also need to say l loved the recent site upgrade but was tres desolé about the crippled RSS feed that served up a taster rather than the full story (usually on an iPhone thro Newsrack). So much so I stopped reading some of the stories. It seems to be back to normal today. Good call!! Thanks.

      English is a great tool.

There is absolutely no chance this feature debuts with 3G connectivity. None, whatsoever. People that actually care about this feature are going to be let down (but only because they are clueless and don’t know any better. Some people actually expect AT&T to be ready for this, which is a hilarious joke)

  7. 9to5Mac Noob says:

    • paruresis says:

Yeah I hope so too. Actually I’m surprised that there is no videochat available yet. Paruresis

      • Sovereign1 says:

The video chat feature is one that we really all expected would be available. Even a basic application like openpress would have done the job nicely. Still, I’m sure they are working on it.

      • jamest says:

I am very curious to see if we would be able to use the iPhones and iPads by video chatting, I still can’t imagine this. Hope to read more about this in the future. I do have an iPhone and I like to use it whenever I can, when watching tv, using kitchen appliances like the electric griddle, or even when I am going around with friends. Good luck with this interesting video chatting feature.

  8. pmz says:

    Absolutely pointless niche feature.

  9. Mike the Dude says:

Niche because traditionally cell companies have raped us over the cost of video calls. If this is pure IP video chat and it’s just data out of you unlimited (joke) plan, then it could very likely be mainstream, for iPhone users at least.

    Curious bit of timing this.

    1. The iPad is shown with a lot of functionality missing from iPhone OS, ie. missing apps.
    2. Camera location in iPad spotted in some leaked photos of its shell.
    3. iPad is due to be released at end of March.
    4. We’re expecting an iPhone OS 4.0 developer preview around the start of March.
    5. Videochat strings spotted in most recent SDK release.

My conclusion, maybe the camera wasn’t left out cos they felt it’s unnecessary, rather by including it, you imply a push in videoconf, people will assume its in the iPhone too. ie. it’s a secondary function for the iPad, so don’t show it straight out, especially if the software ain’t ready. Wait for the iPhone OS release when you’ll be revealing the API’s to it anyway and showing your hand that iPhone V4.0 is a major videoconf tool.

It may be shipped with a camera and a iPhone OS 3.2.1 release with basic video support. Then the real meat comes in June with the new OS released to the public and you have 3rd party apps like skype waiting in the wings.

I hope that the useful idiots that purchase iPad languish in deep remorse knowing that in less than a year iPad will have a camera for video conferencing. Provided, of course, that ATT decides to move to the 21st century.

  12. Kamal says:

Great news, lets hope they really integrate a camera at front!

  13. Steven says:

This “useful idiot” that plans on buying a 1st gen iPad is _fully_ aware that the next version is _very_ likely to have an iSight. No biggie for me, I already plan on using my 1st gen iPad as an educational tool for my current two year old and baby in progress. Not all of us 1st gen purchasers are idiots, some of us actually have a reason for buying it besides “ooh shiny” and others won’t _need_ or _care_ enough about the iSight to justify waiting for it. Also, the majority of 1st gen purchases can easily sell their’s online and still make a decent amount of it back.

  14. 9to5Mac Noob says:

And how did you find these files. I cannot seem to find them in the SDK. And how were you able to open a terminal executable and see all that information?

  15. Erick says:

It doesn’t matter to me. I’m not getting another iPhone or the iPad unless there is Flash and Multitasking. Nowadays we have (better) alternatives to the iPhone, it’s not like 2 years ago when the iPhone was clearly the best.

  16. Jeremy says:

There are some images in this folder, but not the ones shown in the article. The images I see e.g. answer.png do not seem to display in preview or xcode either.

Have they been removed from the SDK (I downloaded it today)? Or in another location?

  17. 9to5Mac Noob says:

You ppl never look fwd, any high-bandwidth feature that shows up in a “Developers” pkg is for “future use”! ATT has announced their next gen LTE network with Alcatel-Lucent and others beginning in 2012, which is plenty of time to optimize all features you idiots have been lusting over since gen1 iphone. It takes years to develop this stuff and make it work end to end and then deliver it to subscribers, nothing ever happens overnight.

    My Iphone 3GS Blocked again……….

My iPhone was blocked on Monday, February 15, 2010 after I restored the new version 3.1.3 with iTunes. I saw my iTunes screen and message appeared saying “You have to change your sim card. Your sim card inserted in this iPhone does not appear to be supported…. for one our officials carriers” (it doesn’t appear like that, but my last sim card was provided by at&t and I hate it). Hello, Apple! I’m living in Ecuador now and I have a different carrier….. How you dare to tell me that my local sim card is not accepted anymore? Apple don’t blame us “people” when we trying to download from the Internet an unlocked tool that is still working on iPhone. Apple, you should understand that in the next 5 years you will have a large community of iPhone users bigger than the U.S., and people usually install on their iPhones local sim cards provided by local carriers. So what? Do I have to buy a new iPhone in Ecuador, because I can’t use the iPhone that I bought in the U.S.? No way!!! What is the purpose of the technology if I can’t work with the same iPhone in Ecuador?

    How to unlock the IPhone 3GS 3.1.3 (7 E 18)

My dear iPhone friends, don’t download any released version to iPhone 3GS that you will find on the Internet. I lost money and time using blackra1n, and pwnage tool.

If you updated your iPhone on iTunes and you have the same problem. Do this:

    1. – Insert your old SIM card
    2. – Connect again your iPhone to iTunes.
    3. – With iTunes still open and your iPhone still connected to your computer, turn your iPhone OFF.
4.-Press and hold the ‘Home’ button and the ‘Sleep/Wake’ button at the same time.
    5. – After exactly 10 seconds, release the ‘Sleep/Wake’ button. Continue holding the ‘Home’ button.
    6. – After 20 seconds (or when iTunes detects your phone is in Recovery mode), release the ‘Home’ button.

Note: Your iPhone should display a black screen. If it turns on, or if it displays the “Connect to iTunes” logo, turn it off (press and hold both buttons for 10 to 20 seconds) and try it again. It may take a few attempts to successfully do this.

I’m waiting for a new trusted tool to unlock the iPhone 3GS version 3.1.3 (7 E 18). For your information, I tried Jailbreak IPhone 3G 3GS 3.1.3 with Sn0wbreeze and they don’t have anything provided yet on the Internet. Follow me on twitter and I will keep you informed about the new released unlock tool.

This situation is unfair and illogical; I have to wait 2 weeks, 2 weeks, to see what happen. Apple better not come to me next month and tell me the solution to this issue is buy the new IPhone 4G, because I will fight for my consumer rights!!!!!!!!!

You see people!!!!! This is a game, first of all was iPhone, then iPhone 2 generation, then iPhone 3 generation, then iPhone 3S generation now iPad, so this is exactly like the story of stuff. Don’t do that Apple, I like iPhone, I like the creativity of app developers. Please, tell your engineers that the only thing they have to do is upgrading “the chip” not the whole device!!!!! If you consider my suggestion then your business-model will be selling “Apple chips”, so people won’t have to buy a new device anymore, helping to reduce the CO2 around the world, and avoiding these kind of issues.

I’m not a software engineer or anything so can someone please explain to me why apple wouldn’t be able to set up the iPad to link up with the iPhone using it’s camera and phone capabilities to make a video conference call. In my mind all you would need is a mount for the iPhone to connect to the iPad and a cable to link them. face the back of the iPhone and the screen of the iPad towards you and you should be able to make this happen. You could also connect your iPad to your TV and utilize the iPhone as a remote control for itunes or video games.

It seem like people don’t know that CDMA ( Verizon, Sprint )is a lot slower than AT&T’s 3G GSM network. GSM-s EDGE is almost as fast as CDMA EVDO. And iPad is not locked down to a carrier you can use any carrier as long as it is GSM carrier ( AT&T, T-Mobile, and the whole Europe ) so it’s logical not to develop a CDMA phone if it works only in one country and would bring unwanted expenses that can be easily avoided by using only one radio chip. And every carrier that would have that many subscribers using it’s network as heavily as iPhone user do, would be on it’s knees. Look at the ratings for this year and previous year and you will see that Verizon is getting lower grades than AT&T this year cause they have more and more (not as heavy ) users that use more and more bandwidth. But the question is when will we run out of it ( bandwidth ). I think AT&T is doing better then other carriers in US (in terms) of keeping the network up and running with that much data hungry devices.
