This one sort of slipped through the cracks on us, but AT&T and Apple have doubled the size of the “over the air” app downloads to 20MB.  The update came sometime earlier this week.  Is this a good move?  Perhaps AT&T is getting cocky with all of that extra bandwidth they have laying around.

Update: We’re hearing that the limit was raised in Germany and Canada as well, so we’re going out on a limb and saying it is global. We are also seeing that Apple has raised the 12MB download limit in the iPhone’s iTunes app to 20MB as well.

    Same in Germany – T-Mobile.

I wish they’d drop the limit for OTA podcast downloads. For whatever reason, I can play an entire podcast in the iTunes app, even if it’s 100s of megs, but I can’t just download it to the iPod app. Doesn’t make sense.

The bandwidth issue is not everywhere. A lot of ATT 3G coverage areas, like here in Louisville KY, is OK and has no issues. Problems are isolated to a few area’s like New York City. Unfortunately, it is being represented in the press as ATT has issues in the whole 3G coverage area. So, are you telling me we need to hold back the rest of the country because a 5-10% population (if it is even that much) has a coverage issue?

And also here in The Netherlands.

In HSPA I don’t believe the issue is whether you can connect and download but rather how long it will take if a number of people are using the limited bandwidth which is limited over the radio interface and over the backhaul as well. Having someone watching a 100M video will not preclude another user from downloading a 20M application, it will just take longer to download the file.

It does not make sense to me that a download be limited and a video stream not be limited. Video is a more difficult application and can’t stall for long without impacting the user experience. On a download, if it takes a few extra seconds the user rarely knows and may not care.

I wish the limit would be 30 MB. The podcasts I listen to are under 30 MB :(

It’s because of that thing coming out in 30 days called the iPad.

  10. annirowe says:

Yep, same goes here in Australia! Not a bad world wide update! ;)

Apple is encouraging devs to create universal apps to bootstrap iPad. In many cases it’s difficult for developers to fit additional resources. Raising this limit helps.
