You can now make and receive VoIP calls over 3G on the iPhone (and iPad?!) according to iCall’s most recent press release.  Apple updated the terms of the SDK to allow VoIP calls over 3G even though some operators, like Tmobile in Germany, don’t allow VoIP calls on their network.  iCall also has push notifications, rounding out a pretty impressive specs list — one that finally makes VoIP a first-class citizen on the iPhone.

Will Skype follow or tack on some more excuses?

Damn T-Mobile here in Germany. Why are these companies so stupid?
It’s there big chance to do something right and save themselves for the future,

      Dumb.

Why do you want VoIP anyway? For the lesser quality? No.
You want VoIP to save money.

To save money from whom? T-Mobile.

Who will miss this money? T-Mobile.

According to the reviews on the App Store this does not work in the UK and it’s a 3 day trial – you have to enter your credit card details to use it even in trial mode.

Users are complaining that it auto-subscribes you after the 3 days trial period – so be mindful of this potentially being far from what it seems…….

I’ll be waiting for Skype – and that’s even if the whole 3G VoIP thing is actually allowed now.

You’d have thought that if it really WAS allowed (3G VoIP) that Skype would have been on the bandwagon by now……..

Oh I’m not so sure about that. Skype App development seems pretty slow. They’ve not even got push notifications yet. Somewhere though I read a comment that Skype wanted to make it ‘right’ and are therefore waiting. Maybe the wait is soon over, now that the limitation has gone. Maybe, they’re just waiting for background App support in OSX 4.0.

Does anyone know whether O2 in the UK would support 3G VOIP calls at all?

    Two words, ‘number portability’.

It’s Garbage. THis might be one of the most Aggravating Apps yet. 1st you stare at a “Connecting Screen for several minutes, than a “Error In Registering. Please start again” screen after that. Than after 10-15 minutes of this it finally Does open (yes this was just Opening the App, not making a Call) you go to call someone and what you hear is an Echo of your own voice and they on the other end barely recognizable. Than Disconnect. What GArbage this App is.

Ho-hum.I’ve been using FRING (w/Skype account) with successful 2-way video calling on a Nokia 5800XM since last October! Of course, this requires a front facing webcam on the smartphone. Maybe the APPL 4G will include this feature, long since present on mid-priced smartphones? Then again, maybe the delay to introduce this feature was caused by Apple’s internal patent procedures. I wonder if the i”PAD” will have a front facing camera…along with its backside adhesive strips.

Apple always manages to overcome any obstacles and the new software is great , I buy all my gadgets from Apple and, thanks to the easy saver rewards program I get amazing discounts so , I am quite happy.

WiDi won’t happen, Apple sells the iMac, which is an all in one unit. WiDi won’t be adopting and taking off for quite some time in my opinion. (if at all)3G isn’t going to happen either, -especially- with the iPad coming out. A vast amount of laptops remain (mostly) stationary, and are likely within WiFi range, not too mention they’re clunky in a truly mobile environment. (So no, 3G in a MacBook doesn’t make sense…. at all.)
