UK and European Apple-watchers may have a wait on their hands before they get their paws around the much-expected tablet – the content/carrier deals purportedly surrounding the device may demand a US-only launch, at least at first.
Suspicion this may be the case has been sparked by the company

Surely we in Australia would be able to import it from the US and still buy apps through the Australian iTunes store?
Sure, but what if there are no “tablet apps” in the Australian store?
This is really bad! Why can’t come companies come up with a way that users are happy. We always get the feeling we’re discriminated because of certain interests. I mean, I live in Spain and this is what we keep up with: prices that are directly translated from $ to €, delays on products, no movies on iTunes…
Anyways, hope it’s just a rumor, but it’s all just too familiar
(hope my english was good enough to transmit what I wanted to say)
For the One Hundred Thousandth time, it’s NOT discrimination. Apple is a U.S. company. When a new product arrives, in limited quantities, without question it belongs in the U.S.
This global attitude is really ridiculous. You’ll get it in time. Want it sooner? Invent your own genius technology manufacturer. Seriously. I’ve never understood how people halfway around the world expect Apple to wipe their rear before taking care of their own at home?
Makes zero sense.
I think he’s upset at the itunes store and apple more then the delay for non americans. In Canada, we couldn’t download movies or shows for the longest time because of local restrictions. The products have a markup that don’t follow the exchange rate and we still can’t use itunes gift cards on the appstore. I’m sure it’s the same issue here.
By the way, there’s a reason why the global attitude is the way it is. It might be because americans tend to think they’re a little entitled (like in your reply) but I like to believe that things like hulu, that displays a little “we posted this on this blog but your countries sucks and is too small for us to care so you can’t watch ” message is really responsible.
Oh and Apple doesn’t manufacture anything, it’s built by poor people on the other side of world. You should check out the environment these workers endure. Especially the polluted environment outside there homes. Then you might think twice about by buying your new shiny gadget.
If it’s tied to a carrier, I’m sure it US only. It’s easier for them to keep it secret and get it setup and working the way they want.
Anyhow, looking forward to this shiny new gadget even if I need to make a quick trip down to the states to buy it.
PS I like the US, it’s a nice country and it’s not always their fault.
Wow! so much that’s wrong with American attitudes in one insular statement.
I bet Steve Jobs would cringe at “This global attitude is really ridiculous.” And “people halfway around the world expect Apple to wipe their rear before taking care of their own at home” is xenophobic in the extreme!
Apple IS a global company. Fact. I’m sure if they can launch everywhere at once, they will. They won’t want to upset non-usa folk if they can help it.
Still, it’s a possibility. But surely between now and a launch in March they can work stuff out to launch in a few key territories simultaneously. ??
You just agreed. The point is, it can’t be done everywhere at once. Given that, where it should launch? The questioned is answered before even being asked.
The only thing your comment does is to reinforce the viewpoint, common among the 6.3 billion non-US citizens, that the 0.3 billion americans are idiots.
Apple started in the USA and has its HQ there, but come on. Apple is a multinational country. It has retail stores in 10 countries. Onlien stores in a lot more countries than that, and iTunes Stores in at least 23 countries. Oh, and the iPhone is available in 94 countries, with more on the way.
Apple is a multinational country. It does not prioritize USA for sentimental reasons. It does it for profit. If Apple some day making more money launching a product in China only it will do so. Stop kidding yourself and wake up.

Why do you automatically think it “without question” should launch in USA first? Because Apple originates from there? Well you grow up and learn about modern global business! No big corporation is only going to limit itself to their country of origin if it is possible to make profits else where, and/or it makes more sense due to climate, culture, economics etc. etc. elsewhere. I really can’t see if you were being sarcastic, but it surely doesn’t seem so. Multiple corporations launch products in other countries before they launch it in their own local market. And claiming that Apple by all means always should launch a product in USA first is ridiculous, as USA today technologically is far from the leader they (might sometime) have been.
Come on, we did produce Jonathan Ive.
This is ridiculous. Not all american’s are like this guy. Please don’t classify us all as idiots. I totally understand where you are coming from. AT&T didn’t have MMS till late 2009, whereas most of the countries in the world had it far before that, more around summer time. I would hate it too if I wasn’t able to get the tablet when it came out. Here’s hoping you can!
We did produce jonathan Ive though…
And he’s pretty great.
if i cant get it in Australia i will cry……… and then head to good ol ebay
ARGH!
This is why I was hoping there would be no cellular connectivity, despite the fact it would be incredibly useful.
It might not be the cell connectivity.. at least not entirely. Because we dont’ know what the device will be (as in what it’ll be used for) if Apple is lining about all of these content providers (magazines, books) and that is the focus (I mean, it might be… who knows?) then it might make sense to hold back the device until that same content is also available in other countries as well.
I think US-only, while very possible, would be less likely than a launching in a handful on countries … of course I only say that because I’m not in the US and am hoping to buy this device if it fits what I need.
that’s not speculation, that’s sadism!!!
Being in Canada, this has been my fear for all too long. However, I still have faith, faith that Apple has a new sense of global-community fostered by the world wide iPhone service providers. If not … ebay or a drive to Buffalo.
I Hope it doesn’t happen. Apple should launch the device all over the world like the Apple TV, that the content is not available all around the world but the device is available. If Apple decide to launch to the US only it will disappoint a lot of customer (half of the customers since half of Apple’s revenues are from outside US) and could make a gray market like the first iPhone version with the hackers consequences trying to hack the device to work outside the US. If the device is available all over the world it should be less people wanting to hack the device just bought at the US.
TABLET GLOBAL, NOT US ONLY ON 27 JANUARY!!!
GREED ! the overpriced iPhone is bad enough with or without those ridiculous contracts. If no euro event is happening as reported here – this looks likely to be the case for the slate. Contract = no sale
This will be ridiculous if they sell these with contracts. Would they really expect people with iPhones to pay TWICE for mediocre 3G connections?
Mediocre in the US, perhaps.
In Sweden the 3G network works great!
Same here in Canada.
hopefully though, there will be a window of opportunity for the smart ones (like me) who got the first iPhones from the US then resold them on eBay for a premium after unlocking them. Back then unlocking wasnt so easy and you could pay cash over the counter for an iPhone without signing any contract. I had a nice paid holiday to Florida from that window, and a free iPhone
We have waited for this magic device for at least the last 2 years. I am ready to order blindfolded but not eager to wait for another launch in Europe. However – there might be new speculations if that’s the case. As OLED is short on demand for a world wide launch there might be a chance to serve the US market only (until the supply chain is fully working).
In any case I can’t wait to see the iSlate, iMag, iTab, iNews, iLoveyou thing.
das ist mir wurst, hauptsache das ding wird jetzt endlich mal vorgestellt
wenns erst später bei uns zu kaufen ist sind die fehler wenigstens schon ausgemerzt
tschö
Perhaps there are no global events because it won’t go on sale on the 27th. If they were there ready to ship you could see them wanting to have journalists allover the world get their hands on it. If its just a preview of a device that is coming in March they may as well just have 1 event in San Francisco.
I’m positive I got the first iPod delivered to Canada a day or two after the announcement. So it would not have been US only.
Oh, the “speculation” ruins my day. Early of the day I am ready to buy an Apple tablet, now I am depressed. First the iPod, then the iPhone, now the tablet. Why? I hate to wait for so long when US get it first!! It really sucks if I cannot Steve Jobs says “It will launch in the US in March…” and not mentioning international release dates! Unfair for people not living in America like me in Hong Kong!
quote:
“the company is also flying select European Apple scribblers and prognosticators (journalists) to Cupertino to attend the event.”
In the last September/October financial presentation, Apple officials told us of “greater expenses in delivering products”…
Will “flying select scribblers and prognosticators” be included in that expenses?
NNNNNNNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Honestly if you voted negative for this article, you’ve shown yourself to be clearly a juvenile with a totally undeserved sense of entitlement (fueled by out of control want). You also do not understand a damn thing about business, distribution, supply line, etc. etc. etc.
There will be limited units on launch, and to avoid actual customer dissatisfaction (as opposed to imagined kind proposed in other posts…) Apple will want them confined to the U.S. to meet local demand. This also gives them the advantage of dealing with bugs in the product/distribution/supply lines on a small scale, before starting world wide distribution.
Looks like I might have to get ready for a trip from Ottawa down to Syracuse, like I did when the 1G iPhone came out…
Well I hope not, reading on CNET UK they speculate the same thing based on no parallel UK event; however Stuff.tv state that they have had an invite to attend.
Though being there for the unveiling vs the actual selling of the “creation” in other countries can mean two different things!
Well I hope they launch it soon, need an in between device (ipHone to iMac) and no not a laptop….
It doesn’t matter, forget the moralistic discussions about what companies should or shouln’t, its their time in the light, they can do whatever is legal and they want to BUT…and its a HUGE BUT.
Apple made a critical error in the step change from US to UK release on 1st Gen iPhone and learned from that on the 3G and 3GS, there is nothing that suggests that the tablet will be set up for US only (IF IT COMES…and I have severe doubts that January is the right time, I see the creative elements here being mostly software based thanks to the invitations design and also the gaming and music suggestions would seem to be out a whack. Aperture, Final Cut Express and Logic Express are screaming out for change)
If the US get even a 6month head start on the rest of the world Apple know that they will lose 20% of the instant sales, the guys like me with £500 in their pocket ready and waiting to buy. We will see the reviews, let the hype boil down and decide that another device has more merit. – Ewen
It has nothing to do with Apple if it does not sell outside the US, at least not much.
If all the rumours are true about E-Book content, newspaper content etc then it will be the content providers holding up international distribution, just like the music companies held up and fought Apple over music and the Movie companies over movies.
I think it is criminal that we are hearing publishers trying to justify that they will charge the same or even MORE for an E-Book than a real hard copy trying to justify that there will be extra stuff like author interviews etc … who gives a crap.
The cost to distribute an E-Book is way less than printing and shipping books
I agree with something I read saying that if you buy a hard copy of the book you should get a code for an E-Book download.
Hey, I live in Japan, and as soon as Steve Jobs says ‘The iSlate (or whatever it is called) will only be in U.S.’ at January 27th, I am throwing out my Macbook Unibody and going to buy Dell Adamo.
@Jazzmic Not just in Spain, we in Belgium, the Netherlands, Italy, Greece etc. also still don’t have Movies, TV-series and music videos. But, despite popular believe, it’s not really Apple’s doing, it’s all about damned RIGHTS!! The media conglomerates are very slow with giving them (Apple) the rights for content distribution in individual countries, meaning most Europeans (except Brits, Germans and the French) still can’t enjoy movies, tv series, etc. even local/localized content isn’t available; like tv series in the language of the country, wether that be Spanish series for Spain or Dutch series for the Netherlands and Vlanders (Belgium) *unless, of course, you know your way around the US iTunes store*
@Seong-Hoon Lee I’d buy an HP Envy notebook, if you catch my drift
Anyone experience anything about the easy google profit kit? I discovered a lot of advertisements around it. I also found a site that is supposedly a review of the program, but the whole thing seems kind of sketchy to me. However, the cost is low so I’m going to go ahead and try it out, unless any of you have experience with this system first hand?

The Center for Media Research has released a study by Vertical Response that shows just where many of these ‘Main Street’ players are going with their online dollars. The big winners: e-mail and social media. With only 3.8% of small business folks NOT planning on using e-mail marketing and with social media carrying the perception of being free (which they so rudely discover it is far from free) this should make some in the banner and search crowd a little wary.
