According to All Things D, Apple has acquired a mobile advertising firm called Quattro Wireless for $275 million.  Quattro is a competitor to Admob which Google outbid Apple in purchasing for $750 million just months ago.  Google-Admob still has to meet FCC qualifications before the deal is complete.

If the Quattro deal is completed, Apple will have entered the mobile advertising world (a big departure for Cupertino), where its iPhone continually outpaces other smartphones in advertising revenues earned.

Although we aren’t fans of the idea, Apple has filed patents for mandatory advertising within its MacOS.

Waltham, Mass.-based Quattro has raised close to $30 million from two main venture investors

Awesome move for Apple. Developers will flock to Apple’s official solution and Google will lose a big chunk of Admob’s business.

I admit that it’s an awesome move for Apple, but in order to be the best brand of devices, those devices it creates must be made by home based businesses that work with any kind of companies. Otherwise, it can decrease just like Nokia did in the last 2 3 years.

Apple took one step ahead in its competition with google and one GIANT leap behind for its customers. If os X 10.7 is only available in ad-filled garbage flavor, I might just never buy an apple computer again. Id rather have crappy windows 7 than an ad filled mac os. Can’t belive macrumors is treating this like good news (maybe for those obsessive apple fanboys) but this is the going to be the worst decision apple made since their decision to put the iphone on at&t (haha that’s why I use a mifi…. an extra $30 a month…. but here in NYC… its worth every penny compared to the crap everyone else has to deal with.)

Relax.  Like Steve would allow an ad-infected OSX on his precious machines.  You’re not seeing the wisdom in this move.  It places Apple in a better position against Google and lets them in on the revenue stream of all those ads on the iPhone.

    • 9to5Mac Noob says:

What is wrong with you people? Do you know how many patents Apple files for that never see the light of day? I guarantee this is one of them. They will not turn Mac OS X into an ad-supported platform. Use your brains.

      • 9to5Mac Noob says:

More like if some other OS want’s to go ad supported, they will have to license the patent from Apple.  Or, Apple is looking in general to stem the tide of ad supported OS’s before they have a chance by locking up the patent.

Google burned their bridges with Apple.  Now it’s on, Apple vs Google 2010.

Android was a shot at Apple’s iphone and let’s face it Google never had to enter the OS business to rule search, but Google is really acting like the new Microsoft with their partners.

The first use for ads in an apple product (that I would be ok with) is an integrated ad system for iphone/ipod touch devs. I would think devs would be a fan of an easy integrated system for adding ads to their apps (ads that will probably be there either way). Plus, as I think over other recent apple purchase and attempt to piece together their purpose I think there could be something more to quattro. If apple wanted to get into the ad business I would guess they would want to differentiate their business from the other ad suppliers. What if apple was planning to use their placebase acquisition in conjunction with ad placement or integrate them in some form to utilize one another. Placebase may just be to develop a mapping app, but their strength was  in maps overlaid with demographic information (I thought). Would apple try to taylor what ads people are presented based on their location and the information placebase already has collected?

As far as apple in the ad business, a few years back I remember apple patenting a way of having ad supported movie downloads (think downloadable  TV episodes like Hulu). Could apple use quattro to make this happen, possibly in conjunction or in place of the itunes TV subscription model that has been batted around over the past few months? If this took flight I would love it. I already use Hulu to watch most of my online TV, but I travel a lot and slow internet just sucks the fun out of watching TV online. Worse yet, when on a flight/drive without internet Hulu offers no help to me.

  6. Ads already come to the iPhone via AdMob. Apple is just getting into the same game that google and msft have gotten into which is web advertising. It’s a huge revenue generator and Apple can diversify in order to have better software offerings. It’s almost free money.

  7. 9to5Mac Noob says:

I’ll take one large Quattro fromage!  :)

  8. 9to5Mac Noob says:

hasn’t apple already gotten into web advertising with those full web page banner ads? there was one that detailed everything with upgrading windows and stuff (sorry for my lack of explaining, but i’m sure some of you know what i’m talking about)

    • 9to5Mac Noob says:

You’re misinterpreting what this means. Sure, Apple advertises on the web now. But they don’t run their own advertising network… in other words, the infrastructure behind serving those web ads.

Apple should cut AdMob in iPhone space by requiring all Apps that integrate with AdMob need to be Paid app. It is because AdMob is getting revenue on Apple expenses such as app download bandwidth. Also, 4.0 OS should include Apple’s ad-engine API for developers to integrate it to their free or paid apps. Therefore, Free apps with ad will only use Apple ad-engine while paid apps could be any ad-engine. Google will then lost all the benefits of AdMob. Apple  should do that right after the merge of Google and AdMob is a done deal. I would love Google to be burned on their every Apple-Attack moves.

I suggest you something to do with those money. You can’t trust the bank that your money will stay there untouched because banks always ask for commission, which is not cheap either. The best thing is to try to put all your money into an easy saver account and you’ll have the possibility to take them out anytime that you want. It doesn’t cost you anything that you’re unwillingly to give.

Advertising can also serve to communicate an idea to a mass amount of people in an attempt to convince them to take a certain action, such as encouraging ‘environmentally friendly’ behaviors, and even unhealthy behaviors through food consumption, video game and television viewing promotion, and a “lazy man” routine through a loss of exercise .
