AT&T is enabling a $10/month option that you can tack onto your iPhone or other AT&T device which will transcode your voicemails using speech recognition and send them to your phone via email or SMS. Sure, Google Voice has been doing this for awhile and doing it free, but AT&T’s version doesn’t force you to give your voicemeil over to Google who will probably index it and slip in ads at some point in the future.
Here’s how to enable Google Voicemail on your iPhone. For the $9.99/month option, see AT&T’s plan details below.
From AT&T:
For just $9.99 per month, Voicemail to Text lets you:
- Receive your voicemail messages as text messages, emails, or both
- Respond how you want

Cool! I love paying for free services…
I always thought there was visual voicemail for the iPhone. Cuz it doesn’t get any more convenient with visual voicemail IMO. And $10 just to receive my voicemail in text? Who uses voicemail anymore? I get 2 voicemails at most per month, so that’d equate to $5/voicetext? Even my professional colleagues don’t use voicemail anymore on work-related materials. We communicate through email or text.
yup thats just what i need another $10 dollars tacked on to my already expensive att bill. i think i will be sticking with google.
Hey AT&T…….FAILLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL !!!!!!
Google’s service may not cost you dollars, but it is not “free.” You are giving up your privacy to a company that explicitly states that it takes all your information, indexes it, archives it, analyzes it, and uses it to bombard you with advertising, albeit more personally relevant than random ads. If that’s your idea of “free” go for it, but there are those of us who have issues with giving Google every bit of personal information about us they can gather with our emails and now voicemails. More power to you if you don’t mind that marketing angle, but nothing is “free.”
All that said, $9.99 a month is just a money grab by AT&T for something that should be considerably cheaper…
How sure are you that at&t doesnt report your info to the govement?Do you really think only google is selling you stuff? yet another reason I’m leaving at&t june even if apple comes out with a super ipone.
If AT&T provided this as a free, or at least cheaper, option for their customers, it would’ve been way more successful and positively welcomed by critics. 10 bucks a month for voicemail translation? Google already offers this for free and it’s awesome.
Verizon Visual Voicemail is only $2.99 a month! How can AT&T possibly charge nearly $10 for their service???
AT&T is for losers.
$9.99 … as in beer … (!)
Verizon charges $2.99/mo and Google offers this same service for free. I guess AT&T doesn’t care what the public things or that their are dead last in the stands
Voicemail should be free visual or not. Seems like all the Telcom’s are getting greedy with services and how we can use the date plans we pay for!
I had Google Voice and their translation sucks. it is always wrong and should be free because it doesn’t work and nobody in their right mind would pay for it! Youmail is an awesome service priced a little less than AT&T’s voice to text. And of course Verizon doesn’t have this service at all! The visual voicemail that Verizon charges $2.99 for is what AT&T and iPhone users get for FREE. Just another item in a long list that Verizon cannot offer until they get their 4G service because they don’t even have TRUE 3G services now. Everyone knows (or should know) that only true 3G service can simultaneously run both voice and data. (check wikipedia for the definition of TRUE 3G service features). AT&T’s should’ve spent all their money on strengthening and growing 3G services instead of trying to get into tv!
Quoted from the above:
Hey AT&T fanboy, get a life! Just because you have success with AT&T doesn’t mean we all love it like the girl next door!
still true though…..
It will be interesting to hear reports of how the service works and what runs in the background at AT&T to convert voice to text and how it will stack up against other options available.
AT&T goes up against free Google Voicemail $9.99/month option Brilliant ideas long coming via oligopoly
ATT are a bunch of PIGS. I have no issue being proud of my Jailbroken and my unlocked phone and telling Apple and ATT to take thier monopolistic dictatorship and stick it where there is a dark dark hole. (hint hint)
