There’s over 100,000 apps now available through the App Store, and it’s official - and there's been over two billion app downloads so far, the company also confirmed.

Apple this morning officially announced the news, which eagle-eyed App Store watchers have known for a while.

“The App Store, now with over 100,000 applications available, is clearly a major differentiator for millions of iPhone and iPod touch customers around the world,” said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing.

“The iPhone SDK created the first great platform for mobile applications and our customers are loving all of the amazing apps our developers are creating.”

“The App Store has forever changed the mobile gaming industry and continues to improve,” said Travis Boatman, vice president of Worldwide Studios, EA Mobile. “With a global reach of over 50 million iPhone and iPod touch users, the App Store has allowed us to develop high quality EA games that have been a huge success with customers.”

“With 10,000 downloads a day, worldwide customer response to our I Am T-Pain App has exceeded our wildest expectations,” said Jeff Smith, CEO of Smule.

“The App Store has given us a unique opportunity to create and grow a very successful business, and we’re looking forward to an exciting future,” he added.

Plus!

Plus, add up all the apps you can run on a jailbroken phone, and the number easily tops 200,000 apps. Maybe Android is getting there; maybe BlackBerry and Palm still have a market. But Windows Mobile? Dead.

You're an idiot - it's not

You're an idiot - it's not dead. It's just not for you.

Be more specific next time, and say "it's dead to me."

You're right - Windows Mobile

68

You're right - Windows Mobile is still an active product.

Many industry obversers consider it a major failure, very quickly losing ground to the competition and failing to capitalize on the Windows brand name.  To quote PC World on WinMobile: "perhaps Microsoft will quickly learn from its previous mistakes and release something that consumers might want.

Sorry I upset you with my prediction that "Windows Mobile" is dead.  It is only dead in terms of industry mindshare - someone could, at least in theory, buy a cell phone that uses the platform.

Quality counts not quantity

Big deal. Quality is what matters. There's 99,950 worthless apps in the store.

Wow.  That many?  You must

Wow.  That many?  You must have downloaded plenty to come up with that figure.  Can you share with us what the only 50 worth having are?

It sounds like you're a big

99

It sounds like you're a big WinMobile fan - a handful apps that do exactly what the guys in a Microsoft Labs want them to do - and nothing more.  And the quality of those apps?  Bottom of the barrel - with 10000x fewer to chose from.

Totally true.  Quality

89

Totally true.  Quality matters.  Happily, there are thousands of quality apps - just look at the sales and the ratings.  The iPhone is still years ahead.

In terms of apps: WinMobile totally dropped to the bottom of the barrel - Microsoft seems to be in a battle with handset makers, consumers, and developers; Palm made a good go of it but looks like it isn't going to make it - sales are medicore at best.  BlackBerry has a fractured platform that is a frustration to all app developers, with some major failed starts like the Storm; Nokia marketing couldn't get out of its own way, despite decent hardware.

Google is the only one that has a shot at competing in the mobile app space at this point.  But there is little money in it for the developer compared to the iPhone - at least so far.

I wouldn't doubt it. Hey

79

I wouldn't doubt it. Hey let's write and app and get rich. Write a piece of junk and suprise.. 10 sales in 12 months... har har har...

There's?

99

There's over 100,000 apps in the App Store means There IS over a 100,000 apps in the App Store. For some reason that just doesn't sound right.

argg

511

that's because it's not.  There ARE over 10,00 Apps.  Annoying. . . . .

My point exactly

That was my point in the original post.  I just didn't spell it out and that was intentional.  I figured they'd get the point.

Yeah, it should be "There're

59

Yeah, it should be "There're over 100,000 apps in the App Store," but that is a little too much, therefore should simply be, "There ARE over 100,000 apps in the App Store," like previously mentioned.

Multiple negatives?  Clearly

Multiple negatives?  Clearly there are many lousy grammar students out there:

Correct: "There are 100,000 applications in the store."

Correct: "There are 5,000 customers waiting in line."

Correct: "They are all upset about the length of the line."

Incorrect: "They are 100,000 applications in the store."

Re-read the wiki page if you disagree.  This is basic English grammar.

Way back when I visited

610

Way back when I visited Kentucky there were a lot of flies. I'd be sat there on my balcony, sipping a sweet mint julep, wearing my white "Englishman abroad' brogues, and feeling good as I watched the night sky above my hotel.

In the distance, I could hear all kinds of sounds, it was exciting, to think, "here I am in Kentucky".  It was a kick after such a long, long flight.

The flies were a problem. At first I'd swat them, then, as the hours passed and the juleps flew, I learned to ignore them. At a certain point, I grew to quite like them, despite the growing welts on my skin. Perhaps they were mosquitoes. I don't know. They were there though, so was I.

We grew to find harmony together, those insects and I, buzzing about my body, close to my head. They became part of the fabric of the place, I found peace. Then I went to bed.

The point? It's nice to know people are reading this stuff. It's good to know people care sufficiently about things that they feel compelled to have an opinion on a headline. It's part of the fabric of things, ultimately leaving me way back in Lexington, at peace.

Be lucky. Care for the small things, and the large things may come to you. And do watch your grammar.
