1.1.2 iPhone Upgrade: Say it with us.. DON'T DOWIT!

OK Ipod Touch v 1.1.2 already hacked.  but iPhone...still wait

OK, here we are again.  Apple is updating the iPhone.  For most of us, there is no reason to upgrade.  YET.  Apple is reportedly bricking AnySIM iPhones again , breaking the iToner and disabling all 3rd party applications.  For the tradeoff, Apple is providing international keyboards (AZERTY and QWERTZ for our European friends) and fixing bugs - including the TIF browser exploit which was used to jailbreak the 1.1.1 version.

Obviously there is a subset of people who have no intention of Jailbreaking/ using any of the 3rd party applications now or at any point in the future.  If so, this upgrade is for you.  Enjoy.  Let us know how it goes.

There are those who are sitting on the fence and may want to use a third party application at some point but haven't jailbroken their iPhone yet.  WAIT.  We know it is tempting but just wait.  WAIT.  If there is a jailbreak on the 1.1.2 or a Option-restore to 1.1.1 then you are golden - upgrade away.  If not, it is a one way street and your iPhone will be jailled.

If you are using/enjoying applications like Navizon (we luv u navizon), Voice Notes (Thanks Erica!), Apollo/Mobile Chat, NES,  Books.app, WeDict, Sketches, Widgets, iBlackjack, Term-VT100, PDF Viewer, Sudoku, Themes, or the many other 3rd party apps, you can't upgrade.  Let's just repeat it just in case there is some confusion:

DON'T UPGRADE YOUR IPHONE TO 1.1.2

If you are (rightfully) concerned about the TIF exploit, AppTapp has a great fix for it.  They will likely also be able to port any imrovements that you'll see in 1.1.2, so again.  So, again...Wait.

Hopefully the community will be able to knock out a hack for this phone pronto and we can all unite again under 1.1.2.

Apple, we understand you are just doing your due diligence and look forward to the day when you aren't doing the bidding of the wireless telecom industry.

Until then.  Thanks for the update.  We are going to pass...for now.

EDIT: As an astute reader just pointed out - it would also make sense not to update iTunes to 7.5 until we see exactly what Apple has planned for us.  Patience!

Comments

If anyone updates their

2934

If anyone updates their iPhone this time and complains, they are fucking morons. Seriously...can we learn a lesson or are we lemmings?

OK hackers - ready set go - I estimate there will be a hack in 3 weeks.

I would stay away from

3331

I would stay away from iTunes 7.5 also, we never know how they can/will lock us back...

Fantastic point!  Just when

3027

Fantastic point!  Just when we were getting down on the comments - a Gem!

updating post now...

I upgraded iTunes to 7.5

2933

I upgraded iTunes to 7.5 (mostly because I don't pay attention)
But I've synced my jailbroken phone and everything and it still works fine.
So iTunes for now is okay.
Just that pesky little 1.1.2.....

Now I may very well be wrong

2729

Now I may very well be wrong here, and please correct me if I am, but the issue I have with all this is that as great as it is that those of us who don't upgrade get to keep our lovely apps / themes / etc., hasn't past experience showed that after the new firmware the development of almost all the apps is largely stifled until the awesome people from the dev team work their magic.

Now I have a hacked 'phone, and at the moment I'm not exactly looking at upgrading, but if history proves true, I'm thinking i'll prob. sit it out with a restore and upgrade until they bring 1.1.2 into line - there really isn't anything as far as thrid party apps go that really appeals to me. Navizon is an excellent concept but is pointless to me because of my location. Apollo is great, but i'm not addicted enough to IM to bother with running it often (same goes for colloquy). iBlackjack/Mines/FiveDice/Lights Off are good to pass the time, but ultimately too easy for me. The only app I really use often is "Light", though a blank safari window is ultimately just as easy.

Perhaps I'm missing something, but the third part development at the moment just seems too "Proof of Concept" for me at the moment. Hopefully we'll see the situation improve around Feb. once the official SDK comes out...

Its good to see the

3332

Its good to see the short-sighted idiots who think like this: "I don't care. I don't want my iPhone running 3rd party apps" are fast becoming the minority. Hopefully this will push Apple to speed up the release of their own SDK. Or at least release a Jailbreak utility for anyone that wants one in the interim.

wow..."short-sighted

3337

wow..."short-sighted idiots"...i thought the admins were going to start filtering out malicious comments that bash one side or the other?...i'm all for people hacking their phone if they choose to, but i'm also for the hacking community to respect those who choose not to...

seriously kevin. you can

3328

seriously kevin. you can dish it out but you certainly can't take it.

"seriously kevin. you can

3227

"seriously kevin. you can dish it out but you certainly can't take it."...really?...show me one place i have bashed the hackers or dished it out...i fully support the hacking...but there is a holier-than-thou attitude of some of the hackers that people who don't hack are lemmings, idiots, sheep, etc...if you want people to support your efforts, or even join them, don't insult them...and don't call them idiots for not doing what you are doing...they may have a very good reason for their choice...

and no doubt, it goes both ways...i'm not defending the non-hackers practices, either...but let's get past this name calling...there are people who like to hack the device, and there are those who choose not to (or don't even know that you can hack it)...and people may swap sides over time...so let's continue to have the conversation about upgrades and hacks and impacts without fanning the flames...the original post did a great job of that and i commend the site owners for reporting on the update in a manner respectful to both sides...

we happen to agree with the

we happen to agree with the commenter - you stopped the quote before it became relevant.

Its good to see the short-sighted idiots who think like this: "I don't care. I don't want my iPhone running 3rd party apps" are fast becoming the minority.

I think the bashing goes both ways.

I voted "I don't care. I

2535

I voted "I don't care. I don't want my iPhone running 3rd party apps".

But NOT because I don't want 3rd party apps. But because I don't really care because apple will release SDK in jan/feb. But there was no such thing in the voting poll so it was kind of hard to vote..

It looks like the parental

3126

It looks like the parental controls are off the fanboys' computers - prepare for the barrage of garbage.

OH btw you commented on another story not the poll

Correct me if I'm wrong,

3335

Correct me if I'm wrong, but. 1.1.2 isn't out yet. Nor is iTunes 7.5. I'm really super glad I followed this link from my newsreader for absolutely 0 news content. woot.

Hi JB, The news is that

3327

Hi JB,

The news is that 1.1.2 is on the way.  We thought we'd let everyone know to be cautious before updating.  If we waited until  after the release the point would be moot.

JB. Obviously you've peed

3132

JB. Obviously you've peed your pants and need to be changed. The article is from Engadget which IS NEWS that it gathered from T3.

There is very relevant news. ITs just not relevant to your closed world. STFU

Feel sorry for us in the UK.

3231

Feel sorry for us in the UK. I was looking forward to picking up an iPhone on Friday and jailbreaking it. Now I will have to wait until 1.1.2 is done before I can use it. Unless of course I can downgrade to 1.1.1 and jailbreak it......

Tell me about it. I'm locked

3433

Tell me about it. I'm locked into an Orange UK contract for the next 12 months (>£300 buyout) and was looking forward to picking up an iPhone on Friday. Doesn't look like that's going to be possible for the time being - my hope is that the upgrade is released before Friday and that a downgrade option is available.

If I wasn't with Orange I'd move to O2 in a heartbeat, but buying out that contract is just not an option for the foreseeable future.

It's a PHONE. Well, I'd

2932

It's a PHONE. Well, I'd love third party apps and I'd love a choice beyond ATT, but I am perfectly happy with my ATT service and I get it -- No third party apps yet. I plan to download and install the new update because I am not as crazed as you all are. There are plenty of legitimate reasons for an exclusive arrangement between ATT & Apple, even if I would prefer more choices. I also have to say that i am not a "subset" of iPhone users -- you are the subset of iphone users.

Obviously we are both

3633

Obviously we are both subsets of iPhone users by definition alone.   Sorry* if we offended you by calling you a subset.

*Not really

Yay for being a subset :D

2928

Yay for being a subset :D

You can have the

3135

You can have the international keyboards now in v1.1.1 by tweaking the M68AP.plist.  At the very top of the plist, you'll see International... change it from False to True.  Reboot your iphone and you will now have a new option in Settings / General  called International.  You can change your default language AND change keyboards by checking which keyboards you want to show up.
If this is the only change to v1.1.2, then it certainly won't be worth upgrading!  You can have international support now in v1.1.1.!

Cheers,
Sealos

while downgrading my iphone

2831

while downgrading my iphone it crashed and i had to restore to 1.1.2 through itunes...i hope a new crack comes out soon

Just like King James I tried

2724

Just like King James I tried concieted's jailbreak package for 1.1.2 and then upgraded to 1.1.2 the problem was that I forgot to have ssh installed so i could not put installer back on, however i did accomplish to have a jailbroken iphone for a little bit. I then tried to downgrade and was not successful after many tries, so I am still gonna try and hack it but for the time being seems like I'm shit out of luck I'll give it a few weeks before someone else figures it out or myself. PS tiff exploit doesnt work either. If anybody figures out how to get root access using the iphone in disk mode please post.

I don't recommend upgrading but I can tell you I don't have any crashing problems as of yet like i had in 1.1.1. overall not to worried about it if you do it by accident it doesnt matter much if your patient and in january/feb native apps will start to show with support from steve himself.

GOOD NEWS! iPod Touch 1.1.2

3227

I don't understand. I may

2728

I don't understand. I may just be an old guy, but I don't feel old yet. I want an appliance to be an appliance. This means I am more then happy to have a cell phone/PDA (yes I use an iphone) that is reliable, predictable, and warranted by the manufacturer. If this means I am limited to ajax based web pages for third party applications, so be it.

How often do you reboot your microwave oven? Never? That is because it is a closed system. Why is the OS X experience better then Vista? Because it runs on a tightly controlled semi-closed hardware platform.

I don't understand why people think Apple has an obligation to open the iphone to all developers? From my point of view this will just reduce the reliability of the product. Apple has released an iphone software upgrade almost once a month. This is fast enough for me.

In conclusion, before anything else, I want my iphone to work. So I am happy to use ajax applications that run in a locked down sandbox. I cannot afford to risk the failure of my business appliance, i.e. my iphone because a part time programmer has a bug in his/her program.

Give apple a break. The iphone is an appliance. And a darn good one at that.

All comments welcome. Just one mans thoughts.

your point is valid.  And

3026

your point is valid.  And you have the choice to leave it locked.  You also have the choice to buy a mac and only install apple software on it.

However, it is perfectly legal to upgrade your ipod/iphone to a hacked operating system as well if you want more functionality at the risk of losing stability - tho we certainly haven't.

FYI iToner still works with

4130

FYI iToner still works with 1.1.2.

The Touch has been hacked and since the Touch and iPhone share the same OS I expect it's going to be a matter of days rather than weeks.

I think apple is also coming

3830

I think apple is also coming with another update in Nov. 29 it all depends how fast people break this one. Cause they are like that debbie downers. All i can say now apple can't stop people from hacking they got people in the states and in europe... apple lost it. last wait and see if anybody from the other side will break it.

When will we get flash and

3236

When will we get flash and WPA enterprise?  Too much to ask?

hells bells... i'm just

2434

hells bells... i'm just excited that darn thing is out and running. it seems like we take technology so for granted. out of the gate for but a few months, and already everybody is clammering for more. don't get me wrong, i'm all about jailbreaking and adding 3rd party applications, altho admittedly most of them are pretty basic and useless. however, i'm beginning to think it'd be best to just wait on apple. we all know a 16gb iphone is coming out, as well as an iphone update, new tools and menus, and a crapload of goodies. so either be content to sit tight, or be content to deal with the complications arising from hacking and having things before others. but don't choose one side and then complain about it...
